7th Girls Win Titles at Lil Charger Relays

  The Chariton seventh grade girls track team won titles in the 4 x 800 relay and the distance medley relay at the Lil Charger Relays recently.  Chariton placed seventh out of eight teams with 71.66 points.

  The 4 x 800 relay team of Emily Shelton, Abby Adams, Breanna Ellis and Julie Granahan placed first in 12:23.45.  The distance medle relay team of Alysha Shutt, Kaden Gray, Grace Bengtson and Erin Payton placed first in 5:04.65.

  In the sprint medley relay, the team of Macy Johnston, Gray, Shelby Dobberthein and Bengtson placed third in 2:14.64.  The 4 x 400 relay team of Granahan, Shutt, Bengtson and Payton placed fourth in 5:10.27.  In the 4 x 100 relay, the team of Crystal Milam, Johnston, Maicy Rasumus and Avelina Popkov placed seventh in 1:06.68.  The 4 x 100 team of Sami Baker, Kennedy Gall, Kaitlin Gwinn and Hailey Deemer finished in 1:14.

  In the 200-meter dash, Payton placed third in 30:53.  Popkov finished 15th in 35:19.  Gall had a time of 37.54.  Destiny Madison finished 24th in 38.68.  In the 100-meter dash, Dobberthein placed fourth in 15.58.  Milam was 10th in 16.25.  Macy Beaty was 11th in 16.40.  Alaynna Wagner was 17th in 16.79.

  In the 400-meter dash, Shelton finished ninth in 1:21.21.  Granahan finished 10th in 1:22.12.  In the 800 meters, Shelton placed sixth in 3:11.79.  Adams was eighth in 3:14.19.  Renee Pedersen was 13th in 3:23.50.  In the 100-meter hurdles, Wagner finished 10th in 22.79.  Gizzy Keeler was 12th in 23.73.

  In the 1,600-meter run, Adams was 10th in 6:51.89.  Ellis was 11th in 6:58.10.  In the 200-meter hurdles, Shutt was fourth in 36.28.  Dobberthein was fifth in 37 seconds even.  In the discus, Ellis placed fifth with a throw of 64'6".  Popkov placed sixth with a throw of 61'2".  Jewelea Matlock was 12th with a throw of 47'8".  Mikenzy Beaty was 19th with a jump of 8'5".

  In the shot put, Dobberthein placed eighth with a throw of 20'6".  Matlock was 13th with a throw of 18'8" and Gray was 14th with a throw of 18'7".  Gwinn was 20th with a throw of 14'6".

  Grinnell won the meet with 150.32 points.  Greston was second with 125.33.  Knoxville was third with 87.16 and Indianola was fourth with 84.33.  Central Decatur was fifth with 73.83.  Norwalk was sixth with 73.32.  Clarke was eighth with 14 points.

The Chariton boys tennis team had another tough test when it faced Knoxville at home on May 5th.  The Chargers lost 9-0 to the panthers on a beautiful day.

In the #1 singles match, Ryan Jones lost to Jared McClung, 10-2.  In the #2 singles match, Nathan Kalsem lost to Austin Little, 10-1.  In the #3 match, Andrew VanDenTop lost to A.J. Jackson, 10-0.  In the #4 match, Lucas Hoeger lost to Braden DeLong, 10-0.  In the #5 match, Michael Lawrence lost to Tony Salato, 10-0.  In the #6 match, Caleb Schrodt lost to Blake McClung, 10-0.

In the doubles play, the #1 team of Jones/Kalsem lost to the team of Little/Salato, 8-4.  In the #2 match, the team of VanDenTop/Hoeger lost to the team of McClung/McClung, 8-0.  In the #3 match the team of Lawrence/Schrodt lost to the team of DeLong/Jackson, 8-0.

Girls Soccer Team Beats Creston in Thriller

  On May 5th (not sure of this date), the Lady Charger soccer team won a thrilling game over Creston in a shoot out, 4-3.  The match was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation and Chariton won the shootout, 2-1, to get the win.  With the victory, Chariton moved to 4-1 on the season.

  Creston wasted no time in showing that they were intent on reversing a previous 3-0 loss, as they scored two goals within the first six minutes of the game.  Finding themselves down 2-0, Chariton tried to shake off the rust from a nearly two-week layoff duer to weather related postponements.  With just 13 minutes left in the first half, Chariton got on the board when sophomore midfielder Deni St. Lawrence gathered a ball on the left side and angled toward the goal, sending a shot into the box, which eventually found the back of the net.  The Lady Chargers went into halftime trailing 2-1.

  The second half was evenly played, with Chariton gradually creating more scoring chances.  With under four minutes left in the game, goal-keeper Bayley Morris gathered the ball and sent a great punt down field, which senior midfielder Emily Grismore ran on to get.  Grismore outraced two defenders and put the ball into the right corner of the goal to tie the game.

  The Lady Chargers continued to attack and with just over a minute left in the game forward Kourtney Nichol took a shot which the Creston keeper could not handle and Grismore put it in the net, only to have the goal denied on a much disputed call.  Regulation time ended with the scored tied 2-2 forcing "sudden victory" overtime.  Two 10-minute overtime periods could not break the deadlock, so the game went to a penalty kick shoot-out in which five players from each team take a penalty kick from 12 yards out against the opposing keeper.

  Chariton goal keeper Bayley Morris made a save on the first Creston shot and Grismore stepped up and drilled a shot into the upper left corner to give Chariton a 1-0 lead in overtime.  Both Creston and Chariton missed their next three attempts with Morris making another nice save.  Creston's final shooter tied the score with a hard shot into the upper netting.  It all came down to Chariton's final shooter, junior defender Jayme Pierschbacher, who calmly stepped to the penalty spot and sent a low ball past the outstretched hand of the Creston keeper giving Chariton a dramatic 4-2 come from behind overtime win.

Blue, Felderman, Morrett score goals in big win over Wildcats at Chariton

  The Chariton varsity boys soccer team shut out Carlisle, 3-0, at Chariton May 2nd.

  Chariton goalie Timofey Timofeyev did an excellent job, but the Chargers really shut down Carlisle.  They didn't have many shots and the ones they did get Timofeyev handled easily.

  The defenders that did the majority of work for Chariton were Jon Lazear, Trevor Steinhausen, Alex Boldyrev and Jon Hendricks.

Chariton's entire defense gave a good effort.  The Chargers had a lot of scoring opportunities in the first half but were only able to put one goal in the net.  This goal came on a corner kick that Asa St. Lawrence took.  The kick went off David Kopytko and right to Chasen Blue's feet and he punched it into the goal.  The score remained 1 to 0 into halftime

  The Chargers weren't happy with the 1-0 lead.  They came out in the second half putting the pressure on Carlisle.  Chariton really passed the ball well all night.

  Willie Felderman was determined to score.  He had some nice opportunities.  Finally Ben Morrett sent a nice ball into Felderman and he hit it just past the goalie to score the Chargers second goal.  Morrett scored the third goal unassisted.  He dribble the ball across the field to his left foot where he hit a 20 yard shot to the back corner of the net to make the score 3-0.

  Morrett really had a nice night scoring a goal and adding an assist.  The Chargers are now 4 and 4.

JV Charger Fall to Carlisle

  The JV Chargers lost 2 to 1 to Carlisle.  Quinn Storm scored again to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead.  But they were unable to hold the lead as Carlisle scored two goals to go ahead 2-1 and held on for the win.

  "The JV is working hard to understand the game.  They are learning more but still have a way to go," Chariton Head Coach Jay Pierschbacher said.

Boy Golfers Third at Knoxville

  The Chariton boys golf team competed at a triangular meet with Albia and Knoxville at Knoxville on May 2nd.  Chariton placed third in the varsity team standings with a score of 186.

  Knoxville won the meet with a score of 157.  Albia was second with a 178.  Knoxville's Wyatt Carter was the medalist with a 38.  Knoxville's Skyler Cunningham was the runner up with a 39.  The Knoxville JV team was first in the JV team standings with a 183.  The Albia JV team was second with 214.

  Sean Sullenger led Chariton with a 43.  Carver Dow shot a 45 and Adam Kaska shot a 48.  Sawyer Dow shot a 50.  Trevor mark shot a 62.

  "We were missing a couple of our normal varsity guys today.  I thought the people that filled in did a really nice job.  The boys continue to improve and become more consistent golfers,"  Chariton Head Coach Ben Schooley said.

  The Chariton Lady Charger golf team competed in a dual meet at Creston on May 2nd.
  Creston won the meet by a score of 209-248.  Creston's Camryn Somers was the medalist with a 47.  Creston's Madison Hance was the runner-up with a 54.
  Cassie Carpenter and Tiffany Dale each shot a 56 for Chariton.  Caroline Hunkele shot a 64.  Morgan Cochran shot a 71 and Jenny Roach shot a 72.  Elena Popkov shot a 79.

The Chariton Charger boys tennis team lost to the Trenton Bulldogs, 9-0 at Trenton, Mo., May 2nd.  The Chargers played hard, but Trenton is an experienced and talented team that doesn't make many mistakes.
In the #1 singles match, Ryan Jones fell to senior Isaiah Swann, 10-0.  At #2, Zach Fisher won three games but lost to senior Wilson Utley, 10-3.  At #3 Andrew VanDenTop lost to Alex Davis, 10-0.  At #4 Lucas Hoeger lost to senior Chase Houghton, 10-0.  At #5 Michael Lawrence fell to senior Jacob Marley, 10-0.  At #6, freshman Caleb Schrodt made his varsity debut and lost to Leighton Fletchall, 10-0.
In doubles play, the #1 team of Fisher/VanDenTop lost to the team of Swann/Davis, 8-0.  The #2 team of Jones/Hoeger lost to the team of Utley/Houghton, 8-0.  In the #3 match, the team of Lawrence/Schrodt lost to the team of Gannon Albrecht/Tyler Lynch, 8-1.

Boy Golfers 8th at Moravia

  The Charger boys golf team competed at the Moravia Invite at Honey Creek Resort May 1.  It was a big meet with 19 teams competing and Chariton finished eighth with a score of 355.

  Daric Laing led Chariton with an 80.  He shot 41 on the front nine and 39 on the back nine.  Sean Sullenger shot a 91 including a 44 on the front nine and a 47 on the back nine.  TJ Hockenson shot a 92 including a 44 on the front nine and a 48 on the back nine.  Sawyer Dow also shot a 92 including a 44 on the front nine and a 48 on the back nine.  Adam Kaska shot a 110 including a 53 on the front nine and a 57 on the back nine.

  They're continuing to get better each time we play," Chariton Head Coach Ben Schooley said.

Charger golfers place fourth at North-South Meet at Centerville

  The Chariton boys golf team competed at the North-South Classic at Centerville on May 1st.  The Chargers placed fourth out of nine teams with a score of 367.

  Centerville's Alex Moorman was the medalist with a 70.  Tyler Maddison of Albia, Noah Simon of Central Decatur and Cody Quint of Putnam County, Mo., tied for runner-up honors with a 74.  Jake Hargrave of Centerville finished fifth with a 75.

  Daric Laing and TJ Hockenson each led Chariton with an 89.  Both Laing and Hockenson shot a 45 on the front nine and a 44 on the back nine.  Sawyer Dow shot a 91 including a 47 on the front nine and a 44 on the back nine.  Sean Sullenger shot a 98 including a 47 on the front nine and a 51 on the back nine.

  Adam Kaska shot a 100 including a 51 on the front nine and a 49 on the back nine.  Trevor Mark shot a 111 including a 56 on the front nine and a 55 on the back nine.

  Centerville won the meet with a 300.  Albia was second with a 319 and East Union was third with a 348.  Central Decatur was fifth with 369.  Milan, Mo., was sixth with a 372.  Putnam Co., Mo. was seventh with a 374.  Davis County was eighth with a 381 and Schuyler County, Mo., was ninth with a 396.

Bryce Mullins Wins First at State

Bryce Mullins Wins First Place All-Around in his Division at State

  Bryce Mullins, 7, of Chariton is a level 4 gymnast at Chows Gymnastics in Des Moines.  His team competed at state on March 22, bringing home the first place trophy for level 4.  Individually Mullins got first place All Around in his division along with first place in all six events which are: high bar, parallel bars, rings, vault, floor, and pommel horse.

  Mullins also competed in four other meets this year.  He traveled to Chicago, Wisconsin Dells, Wisc., Oklahoma City, Okla., and Iowa City.  Mullins won 1st place All around in all four of those meets and he won a total of 23 medals, 14 first place, seven second places and two fifth places.  The team took first place in Iowa City and second place in Oklahoma City.

  Mullins started competition tumbling when he was four years old but decided he wanted to do more than just tumbling, so his parents got him into recreational classes at Chows when he was five.  He worked very hard and made his way up to intermediate.  A year later he got an invite to joint the boys team.  He practices 11 hours a week during the school year and this summer he will be moving to level 5 and will practice 14 hours a week.

  Chows Gyrmnastics is the home of 2008 Olympic Gold medalist Shawn Johnson and 2012 Olympic Gold medalist Gabby Douglas.

  The Chariton girls golf team played in the rain at Davis County on April 29th.  Cassie Carpenter was the meet medalist with a 55 score.  Davis County's Skylar Yahnke was the runner-up with a 61.  Chariton won the dual meet by a score of 258-266.

  Caroline Hunkele shot a 62.  Tiffany Dale shot a 65.  Almee Greiner shot a 76 and Morgan Cochran shot a 77.  Elena Popkov shot a 78.

Charger Girls Tennis Team Has Two Place Winners at Knoxville

Koehn Places Fifth, Savage Sixth at Knoxville Invitational Tennis Tourney

  The Chariton girls tennis team had a couple of place winners at the Knoxville Invitational on April 26.  In singles play, Aspen Koehn place fifth overall, and Sheena Savage placed sixth.

  In the singles play, third-seeded Koehn began with a 8-6 win over Bayle Walker of Davis County.  She lost to top-seeded and eventual Champion Libby Bemis of Clarke, 8-2.  Koehn faced Walker in a rematch and beat her again.  It was an all Chsriton match in the fifth place match as Koehn beat Savage, 8-5.

  Savage began by beating Clarke's Macy Snell, 8-2.  She then lost to #2 seed and eventual runner-up Jordyn Thompson of Davis County, 8-1,.  Savage faced Snell in a rematch and beat her, 9-7.  She then fell to Koehn in the fifth place match 8-5 to finish sixth.

  In doubles action, the team of Justine Hamilton/Alexis mullins lost to the team of Madison Chrisman/Shelby VanSteenwyk of Konxville, 8-2.  Hamilton/Mullins lost to the team of Sydney Donner/Alex Kelly of Centerville, 8-5.

  The team of Goril Michaelsen/Courtney Shounkwiler lost to the team of Amory Glosser/Elizabeth Hargrave of Centerville by a score of 8-5.  Michaelsen/Shounkwiler lost to the team of Sydnee Redman/Rachel Simpson of Clark,8-4.

Charger Boys Soccer Team Beats PCM

Charger Boys Soccer Team Scores Three Second Half Goals to Beat PCM

  The Chariton Charger varsity boys soccer team poste d a dramatic 3-2 come from behind victory at PCM on April 24th.  Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Chargers rallied to score three goals in the second half to get the win.  The Chargers started out controlling the game and were getting good shots.  PCM scored first in the 17th minute of the first half to take a 1-0 lead.  The Mustangs scored again in the 14th minute and took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

  The Chargers came out strong in the second half.  Asa St. Lawrence sent a nice ball through to Chasen Blue, who promptly hit it past the PCM goalie in the 44th minute to make the score 2-1.  The score remained the same for the next 23 minutes.  The Chargers knocked on the door but couldn't score.

  Eduard Rodygin sent a nice ball out to David Kopytko who hit a great shot off the back post to tie the game at 2-2 in the 53rd minute.  Chariton was called for a hand ball in the penalty box, which gave PCM a mark.  Chariton goalie Timofey Timofeyev mad a great stop on the Mustangs' penalty kick to keep the score at 2-2.

  The Chargers wouldn't be denied after the great play by Timofeyev.  They were relentless around the goal and took their firswt lead when Blue made his second goal of the game in the 76th minute to put them up 3-2.  Chariton held on for the dramatic win.

  "Wow what a game!  This is one of the best comebacks that I have watched as a coach.  This was a great game where the boys wouldn't give up.  You don't see many high school soccer games where a team scores three goals in the second half to win 3-2," Chariton Head Coach Jay Pierschbacher said.

JV Game Ends in Tie

  The JV game ended in a 1-1 tie.  PCM scored first in the 21st minute to take a 1-0 lead.  The Mustangs shot a ball and played it into the net.  Fourteen minutes later Gabriel Plank scored his second goal of the year to tie the game at 1-1.  The game was shortened because of the weather and only lasted 45 minutes.

Lady Chargers Shut Out Creston

  On the evening of April 22, 2014, the Lady Chargers hosted the Creston Panthers and came away with a 3-0 win.

  Chariton began slow, but soon found themselves dictating play and created several chances.  Forward Kourtney Nichols broke through and pounded a ball off the left post on a near goal.

  Not long after that the Chargers sent a ball in front of a congested goal and saw the ball bounce off midfielder Taylor Tuley to a Creston defender who inadvertantly put the ball into the net for an own goal, giving Chariton a 1-0 lead.  With just minutes left in the first half, Nichols received the ball on the right wing and sent a shot across the front of the goal where Junior forward Vicki Slobodyanik was in position to redirect the ball to the back of the net.  Chariton led 2-0 at halftime.

  Creston came out with renewed energy in the second half, and the Charger defense withstood their attack and mounted a counter-attack which sprung midfielder Emily Grismore loose on the break-away which she deftly slotted past the Creston keeper to give the Chargers a 3 goal lead.  Chariton protected and preserved the shutout for their second shutout of the season.

  Coach Dennis St. Lawrence praised the team, "We have been seeing improvement in each game and this was no exception.  Jayme Pierschbacher did a terrific job shutting down any attack that Creston tried to send through.  Emily really had a good game; besides her goal she did a great job controlling the mid-field."

  The Chargers record is 3-1.

Charger Boys Tennis Team Falls to Albia

  The Chariton boys tennis team lost to a strong Albia team, 8-1, at Chariton Monday night.  The young Charger team played well and their win came in the #6 varsity singles match where senior Joseph Hixenbaugh dominated sophomore Luke Sinclair in a 6-1 win.

  "Joseph recently joined the team and played extremely well, especially at the net,"  Chariton Head Coach Mark Felderman said.  Felderman is now the boys' team coach and will be for the rest of the season.

  In the #1 varsity singles match, sophomore Ryan Jones, played senior Hobie Hein tough before losing, 6-1.    "Ryan played well against the best #1 player in the SCC this year," Coach Felderman said.

  In the #2 match, freshman Nathan Kalsem lost to senior Skylar Hoover, 6-1.  In the #3 match, senior Zach Fisher battled back from an 0-4 deficit and won two games against Austin O'Leary before losing, 6-2.  in the #4 match, freshman Andrew VanDenTop lost to Blake Lawless, 6-1.  "Andrew struggled with his serve in this match but fought hard,"  Coach Felderman said.  In the #5 match, freshman Michael Lawrence lost to Noah Belt, 6-0.

  In doubles play, the most competitive match was at #3 where the team of Lawrence/Hixenbaugh lost to the team of Rhett Waters/Rob Hannah, 6-7.  After being tied 6-6, Chariton lost the tiebreaker, 7-2.

  "The number three team fought hard in the most exciting doubles match.  Michael really improved as the match progressed.  Joseph played well," Coach Felderman said.

  The other two doubles matches were also competitive.  In the #1 match, the team of Jones/Klasem lost to the team of Hein/O'Leary, 6-2.  In the #2 match, the team of Fisher/VanDenTop lost to the team of Caleb White/Lawless, 6-2.

Boy Golfers Second at Pleasantville

  The Chariton boys golf team traveled to Pleasantville on April 21st for a meet with Pleasantville and Centerville.  Chariton placed second with a score of 171.

  Centerville won the meet with a 155 score.  Alex Moorman of Centerville was the medalist with a 35.  Jake Hargrave from Centerville was the runner-up with a 39.  Pleasantville placed third  with a 204.

  TJ Hockenson led Chariton with a 41.  Daric Laing shot a 42.  Sawyer Dow shot a 44 and Sean Sullenger shot a 44.  Trevor Mark shot a  48 and Adam Kaska shot a 51.

Dale Leads Girls at Winterset

  The Chariton girls golf team competed at the Winterset Invite in Winterset April 19th.  The Lady Chargers didn't have enough golfers to register a team score and were led by Tiffany Dale, who shot a 107.  Caroline Hunkele shot a 121 and Jenny Roach shot a 127.

  Sara Waigand of Creston was the medalist with a 94.  Jordan Jackson of Winterset was the runner-up with a 99.

  Norwalk won the team standings with a 420.  Winterset was second with a 424.  Clarke was third with 447.  Perry was fourth with 564.

Dow Leads Golfers at Knoxville

  The Chariton boys golf team competed at the Knoxville Invitational on April 19th.  The Chargers placed eighth out of nine teams in the 18 hole tournament with a score of 422.

  Sawyer Dow led Chariton with a score of 96.  he shot a 51 on the front nine and a 45 on the back nine.  Sean Sullenger shot a 104.  He shot a 51 on the front nine and a 53 on the back nine.  Adam Kaska shot a 109.  He shot a 52 on the front nine and a 57 on the back nine.  Trevor Mark shot a 113.  He shot a 56 on the front nine and a 57 on the back nine.

  Carver Dow shot a 122.  He shot a 66 on the front nine and a 56 on the back nine.  Caden Steinhausen shot a 131.  he shot a 66 on the front nine and a 65 on the back nine.

  Pella won the meet with a 312.

Boys Soccer Teams Fall to Bondurant

Chariton Varsity loses to Bondurant-Farrar

  The Chariton varsity boys soccer team lost at Bondurant-Farrar, 3-0 on April 18th.  The Blue Jays scored two goals in the first half and one in the second to get the win.

  The Chargers played well but were unable to mount much of an offensive attack.  They had eight shots and weren't able to convert any of them.

  "We had a lot of players missing due to injuries and other situations.  We really worked hard in this game.  We had a lot of players playing in new positions.  I was proud of the effort that our team demonstrated in a difficult position.  We grew as a team and the boys grew as individuals as well,"  Chariton Head Coach Jay Pierschbacher said.

Plank Scores First JV Goal

  In the JV game, Chariton lost 2-1.  Gabriel Plank scored the JV Chargers' first goal of the year.  He scored in the 21st minute on a nice hustle play by Tyson Utzke, who won the ball and passed it to Gabriel who shot it past the goalie into the net.  The JV's went on to give up two goals and ended up losing a close game.

Koehn, Savage Get Doubles Win Against Saydel at Triangular Meet

  The Chariton girls tennis team traveled to Saydel for a triangular match with Saydel and Knoxville on April 17th.  Chariton had two of their varsity players play in singles competition and the other four top varsity players playing in doubles competition.  There were four singles matches and four doubles matches.
  In singles play, Justine Hamilton lost to Knoxville's Emily Blankenship, 8-0.  Hamilton lost to Melanie Gustafson of Saydel, 8-2.  Alexis Mullins lost to Sam Thompson of Knoxville, 8-1.  She also lost a close match to Michaela Bobenhase of Saydel, 7-9.
  In doubles play, the team of Sheena Savage/Aspen Koehn lost to the Knoxville team of Taylor Carter/Paige Spowart, 8-2.  The team of Koehn/Savage had a nice win over the team of MacKenzie Miller/Sydney Samples of Saydel, 8-5.  The team of Mikayal Keith/Courtney Shounkwiler lost to the Knoxville team of Natalie Warrall/Madison Chrisman, 8-2.  The team of Keith/Shounkwiler lost to the team of MacKenzie Carter/Casey Brown of Saydel, 8-2.
  "Knoxville has a really strong team.  We tried our hardest and didn't give up.  With Saydel we were more evenly matched.  We had a couple of chances to beat them, but ended up only winning one match," Chariton Head Coach Chelsy Arnold said.
  "This was the first triangular meet any of the coaches had done.  It went very smooth, but next time I will pair up my girls a little differently.  It was a really good experience for everyone!" Coach Arnold Said.

Bengtson Wins 800, 4 x 800 team also first at Clarke Relays

  The Chariton boys track team had a banner day with titles and two second place finishes at the Clarke Relays at Osceola April 17th  Christian Bengtson won the 800 meter with a blistering time of 2:03.52, nearly six seconds ahead of the second place finisher.  The Charger 4 x 800 relay team of Cody Evans, Aaron Cain, Evan Havick and Bengtson also placed first in a time of 8:44.54, almost 11 seconds ahead of the second place team.  

  Luke Evans placed second in the 3,200 meter run in 10:57.82.  In the distance medley relay, the team of Dillon Sanders, Zach McElroy, Cain and Havivk also placed second in 3:59.85.  As a team, Chariton placed fourth overall (out of eight teams) with 63 points. 

  The Chargers also had two third place finishes in the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200.  In the 4 x 100, the team of Stephen McCurdy, McElroy, Austin Ritenour and Saunders placed third in 47.56.  In the 4 x 200 the team of McCurdy, McElroy, Ritenour and Brett Braida placed third in 1:39.69.

  In the 110 meter hurdles, Ethan Schreck placed fourth in 18 seconds even.  Braida placed fourth in the 200 meter dash in 24.28.  Bryce Exline placed ninth in 25.55.  In the 100 meter dash, Sanders ran his best time of the year and placed fifth overall in 11.68.  In the 400 meter dash, Exline placed fifth in 55.42.  Cody Moore finished eight in 56.66.

  In the shuttle hurdle relay, the team of Schreck, Dustin Hale, McCurdy and Austin Cline placed fifth in 1:11.37.  In the 1,600 meter run, Evans placed sixth in 5:10.45.  In the 400 meter hurdles, Austin Cline finished eighth in 1:11.21.

  Knoxville won the team standings with 147.5 points.  Clarke was second with 86.5.  Nodaway Valley was third with 73.  Van Meter was fifth with 58.  Southwest Valley was sixth with 49.  Central Decatur and Interstate 35 each tied for seventh with 40.

Elk Relays in Eddyville, Girls Place

Seuferer Third in Shot Put, Shuttle Hurdle Relay Team Third at Elk Relays

  Third place finishes in the shot put and the shuttle hurdle relay were among the highlights for the Chariton girls track team at the Elk Relays in Eddyville April 17th.  Chariton placed seventh out of eight teams with 22 points.

  Emily Seuferer placed third in the shot put with a throw of 33'2".  The shuttle hurdle relay team of Maria Blong (18.86), Tori Bauer (20.13), Laurin Zern (20.68) and Carlie Schaeffer (18.59) placed third in 1:18.65.  In the sprint medley relay, the team of Jessica Wiederholt (14.6), Zern (16.17), Sophia DeMaria (32.49) and Ryley Heffron (1:11.67) placed fifth in 2:14.78.

  In the 4 x 800 relay, the team of Seuferer (3:04.41), Heffron (3:06.91), Ashley Batty (3:26.36) and Alexa Rich (3:24.27) placed sixth in 13.05.24.

  In the shot put, Emma Fuhs didn't place with a throw of 26'5".  In the discus, Fuhs had a throw of 86'2".  Seuferer had a throw of 79.11.  In the long jump, Wiederholt had a jump of 13'3".  Schaeffer had a jump of 12'3".

  In the 3,000 meter run, Allison Summerfield finished in 13:37.18.  In the 100-meter dash, Danielle Donahue finished in a time of 15.06.  Michelle Sargent finished in a time of 16.67.  In the distance medley relay, the team of Sarah Fuhs (34.05), Heffron (32.45), Carley Arnold (1:21.62) and Mackenzie Curran (3:03.6) finished in 5:32.43.  In the 4 x 200 relay, the team of Wiederholt (30.28), Zern (31.44), Bauer (32.84) and DeMaria (30.98) finished in 2:06.35.

  In the 100 meter hurdles, Blong finished in 17.74.  Schaeffer finished in 17.78.  In the 800 meter run, Batty finished in 3:33.32.  In the 200 meter dash, Donahue finished in 32.52.  Katelyn Thorne finished in 33.92.  In the 400 meter hurdles, Schaeffer finished in 1:14.32.  Blong finished in 1:18.41.

  In the 1,500 meter run, Curran finished in 6:00.36.  Summerfield finished in 6:23.22.  In the 4 x 100 relay, the team of Wiederholt (14.46), Bauer (16.40), Sarah Fuhs (15.73) and Blong (14.03) finished in 60.47.  In the 4 x 400 relay, the team of Demaria (1:13.81), Seuferer (1:11.97), Heffron (1:20.02) and Arnold (1:21.22) finished in 5:07.12).

  Washington won the team standings with 127 points.  Fairfield was second with 122.  Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont was third with 93.  North Mahaska was fourth with 76.  Wayne was fifth with 74.  Central Lee (Donnelson) was sixth with 55.  Centerville was eighth with 20.

Bengtson Places Third in 800; 4x800, Shuttle Hurdle Relay Teams Each Place 
Fourth at Charger Relays

  On a cold, brisk night the Charger boys track team hosted the Charger Relays at Bob Cain Track on April 15th.  Among the highlights for Chariton were Christian Bengtson running a personal best time in the 800 meters and the 4x800 relay team of Cody Evans, Aaron Cain, Evan Havick and Bengtson running their best time of the year.  As a team, Chariton placed eighth overall out of eight teams in the big school or Class AA standings with 42 points.

  In the 800 meters, Bengtson placed third overall with a time of 2:03.19.  The 4x800 team of Evans, Cain, Havick and Bengtson placed fourth overall with a time of 8:46.34.  In the shuttle hurdle relay, the team of Ethan Schreck, Dustin Hale, Stephen McCurdy and Austin Cline placed fourth overall in 1:10.43.

  In the 3,200 meter run, Luke Evans placed fifth overall in 11:20.28.  Joe Gookin finished 10th in 12:32.93.  In the long jump, Dillon Sanders placed sixth overall with a jump of 17'5.5".  Cody Stevenson finished 12th with a jump of 13'11.5".  In the shot put, Alec Reynolds placed seventh overall with a throw of 36'2.5".  Jared Wright placed eighth with a throw of 35'6.5".

  In the discus, Hunter Miller finished 10th with a throw of 89'6".  Chase Altenhofen finished 11th with a throw of 89'3".  Dalton Shimerda finished 17th with a throw of 70'1".
  In the 4x200 relay, the team of McCurdy, Zach McElroy, Austin Ritenour and Brett Braida placed fifth in 1:40.96.  In the 4x100 relay, the team of McCurdy, McElroy, Ritenour and Sanders placed sixth in 48.20.  In the 4x400 relay team of Braida, Cain, Cody Evans and Nate Hoeger placed sixth in 3:56.13.  

  In the 100 meter dash, Sanders finished 12th in 12.41.  Jacob Larrington finished 15th in 14.05.  In the 200 meter dash, Braida placed eighth in 24.85.  Bryce Exline finished 13th in 26.14.

  In the 400 meter dash, Chase Altenhofen finished 12th in 58.60.  Hoeger finished 13th in 59.04.  In the 110 meter hurdles, Schreck placed sixth in 18.80.

  In the 1,600 meter run, Luke Evans finished 10th in 5:19.87.  Jonah Thatcher finished 14th in 5:42.79.  Nick Cline finished ninth in 1:11.78.  Chariton's distance medley relay team was disqualified.

  Pella won the Class AA standings with 144 points.  Carlisle was second with 115 and Albia was third with 104.

  Mt Ayr was fourth with 96.  Centerville was fifth with 71.  Creston was sixth with 62.  Clarke was seventh with 61.

Girls Soccer Team Beats Ottumwa

  The Chariton girls' soccer team took to the road for two games within the week of 4/15 and 4/22.  They went 1-1 with a 4-0 loss to Oskaloosa and an exciting 2-1 win over Ottumwa.

  Chariton traveled first to Oskaloosa to take on the Indians.  The Lady Chargers gave up an early goal just eight minutes into the game, but battled hard through the rest of the first half to head into the intermission down by one.

  The game was eventually decided with a two-minute span midway through the second half when Oskaloosa scored two goals in that span.  They added one more goal with seven minutes left in the game to hand Chariton a 4-0 loss.  Coach St. Lawrence commented, "I told the girls that our attitude should be 'Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn' and this was a good learning experience.  The girls let themselves get down after the second goal and quickly found out how costly that can be.  I was pleased with the effort they extended in the last five minutes of the game, even though the result was determined."

  Tuesday the Lady Chargers traveled to Ottumwa.  Just seven minutes into the contest, Chariton goal-keeper Bayley Morris made a save and had a good punt down the left side.  Sophomore midfielder Deni St. Lawrence gathered the ball, beat a defender and dribbled it down to the end line where she crossed it in front of the goal where senior forward Kourtney Nichols was waiting to pound it in the goal.  Chariton had several other chances to score in the first half, but couldn't finish and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

  Ottumwa evened the score in the .55th minute when forward Daylin Latham sent a powerful shot just inside the right post.  The score remained tied until just under six minutes remained when Nichols received the ball on the right side, dribbled across the middle and hit a shot that not only went in the goal, but found its way through a  hole in the back of the net and led to a delayed goal celebration.  Nichols second goal of the night and fourth of the season proved to be the game winner, as the Chargers held on for the 2-1 win, bringing their record to 2-1 for the season.

  Coach St. Lawrence was pleased with the effort of the girls, "I was really happy with the way the girls responded when Ottumwa scored, they learned from the Oskaloosa game and didn't allow themselves to get down.  Our defense of Jayme Pierschbacher, Triston Decker, Lindsay Black, Starr Covington, Sam Banks and Mackenzie Krutsinger really played well together.  Bayley Morris also did a good job in the goal having 10 saves on the night.  This was a total team effort and that is good to see this early in the season."

Lady Charger Golfers Fifth at Centerville

  The Chariton girls golf team competed at the Centerville invite at the Manhattan Club in Centerville on April 15th.  Chariton finished fifth out of seven teams with a 460 score.

  It was an 18-hole tournament and Tiffany Dale led Chariton with a 98 score.  Cassie Carpenter shot a 112 and Caroline Hunkele shot a 116.  Jenny Roach shot a 134.  Central  Lee's Alex Krehbiel was the medalist with an 81.  Lexie Van Polen of Albia was the runner-up medalist with an 88.

  "Tiffany played an outstanding back nine, shooting a 44, which was one of the best nine-hole scores of the tournament.  I was pleased with the limited number of double digit scores the girls had during their first 18-hole meet of the year," Chariton Head Coach J.J. Stout said.

  Albia won the meet with a 373 score.  Centerville was second with 418 and Central Lee was third with 428.  Davis County was fourth with 449.  Eddyville-Blakesburg-Freemont was sixth with 517.  Moravia was seventh with 541.

More Scholarships Offered

PEO Scholarship Available

Applications are now being accepted for a $500 scholarship available to graduating Lucas County seniors.  This scholarship is given by chapter 0S of PEO.  They are a local organization wishing to promote education in our community.  If you would like an application form, please contact the office at Chariton Community High School.

CCEA Scholarship being offered

The Chariton Community Education Association (CCEA) is offering a $500 scholarship for a college junior or senior who is majoring in education and is a graduate of Chariton High School.  The fundraiser for this scholarship was held last fall when desert plates were sold following the high school musical.  This will be the sixteenth year for the scholarship.  The application deadline is May 15.  Information and application forms may be obtained at the Chariton High School Office or the school's website.  For further information contact Linda Miller at 774-5066.

Shelton Law Firm Scholarship to be Awarded

Applications are now being accepted for a $1,000 scholarship given by Shelton Law Firm.  This is available to graduating Chariton High School seniors.  This scholarship is being given to promote education in our community.  If you would like an application form, please contact the guidance office at Chariton Community High School.  The scholarship will be announced at the senior program in May.

Paul Revere Masonic Lodge Offers Scholarship

Paul Revere Masonic Lodge at Lucas is offering a A$500 scholarship open to any student pursuing continuing education at any accredited college or technical school.  Applications are available at Chariton Wayne and Mormon Trail High Schools, or call 641-203-5296.  Applications must be received by April 15 to be considered.

Orva Fjelland Hibbs Scholarships

Applications are now being accepted for two $1,500 scholarships available to Chariton High School graduating seniors.  These scholarships are given by Tom Hibbs in memory of his mother, Orva Fjelland Hibbs.

Tom Hibbs graduated with the CHS class of 1964.  He is giving scholarships to promote education for students at Chariton High School.  If you would like an application form, please contact the guidance office at the high school.  The scholarships will be announced at the senior program in May.
