Felderman Places 2nd at Knoxville in Tennis Tournament

Willie Felderman  made it all the way to the singles final before losing to finish second.  The teams competing were Chariton, Knoxville, Saydel, Albia, Oskaloosa and Pella.  Several members of the Chariton boys tennis team competed at the Knoxville Tournament.
Felderman was the #1 singles seed and received a first round bid.  He beat Oskaloosa senior Matt Strong, 8-1, in his first match.  He beat Tom Pettit of Pella, 8-4, to advance to the championship.  He faced senior Michael Schemm of Pella and lost 8-3 to finish second.
The other singles player was senior Kody Jones.  Jones beat Joe Smith of Saydel, 8-2, in the first round.  He faced Schemm of Pella, the eventual champion next and played a good match , but lost 8-5.
In doubles play, the team of Joseph Hixenbaugh and Ryan Jones lost to the team of Jacob Phillipsen/Andrew Smith, 8-1.  The team of Quinn Storm/Chase Fletcher lost to the team of Tom Palmer/Aaron VanMaanen of Pella, 8-2.

The Chariton varsity girls came through with their first individual varsity match win in an 8-1 loss against Albia at Chariton.  In the #3 singles match, Sheena Savage beat Albia'a Amber Mills, 8-6.  The four, five and six varsity singles matches were also competitive but Chariton came up short.  Chariton also won three of five JV doubles matches on the night.  Mikayla Keith (pictured above) was in the #6 match and she was involved in a tightly contested thriller with Brooke Showers but came up short, losing 9-7.

Miranda Davis in Senior All-Star Basketball Game

Miranda Davis, a senior at Chariton High School, was selected to play in the Larry Niemeyer Senior All-Star Basketball Game in Cedar Rapids on April 7.  The Iowa Girls Coaches Association sponsored the game.  Davis scored 12 points and had one assist in her game.  Davis played with girls from MOC-Floyd Valley, Iowa, Iowa Falls-Alden, Williamsburg, Mid-Prairie, South Tama, Columbus Junction, OA-BCIG Ida Grove, Monticello, Central Springs Manly and Estherville.

Chariton Girls Place Sixth at Lady Charger Invite

Lakeview Country Club was the location of the Lady Charger Invite Golf game on Saturday, April 6th.  It was a cold and windy day making play difficult.  The girls placed 6th out of seven teams in the 18-hole tournament with a score of 474.  Cassie Carpenter led Chariton with a score of 114.  Leah Dow shot a 115 and Elyssa Black shot a 117.  Mikaela Plank shot a 128 and Caroline Hunkele shot a 136.

Bengtson 2nd in 800 at Charger Relays

The Chariton boys track team did very well placing high in a number of events at the Charger Relays April 9.  Chariton placed 8th overall as a team in Class AA with 36 points.
Christian Bengtson placed second with a time of 2:07:60 in the 800 meter run.  This was Chariton's highest finish of the night.
Bengtson also placed fifth in the 400 meter dash in 55.83.  In the 110 meter hurdles, Tyler Nance and Ethan Schreck each ran personal best times.  Nance placed eighth in 18.09 and Schreck was ninth in 18.23.
In the 3,200 meter run, Luis Ortiz placed eighth overall with a personal best time of 11:57.30.  In the 400 meter hurdles, Tyler Nance placed ninth in 1:06.24 and Aaron Cain placed seventh in 1:05.24.
In the 1,600 meter run, Caleb Allen placed 14th in 5:47.80 and Aaron McDonough placed 15th in 5:47.90.
In the discuss, Travis Morr placed fifth with a throw of 115'1".  Alec Reynolds placed 13th with a throw of 82'3".  In the shot put, Reynolds placed seventh with a throw of 36'1".
In the long jump, Daric Laing placed eighth with a jump of 17'8".  CJ Dixson placed 11th with a jump of 17'4¼".
In the 100 meter dash, Jon Lazear placed 13th in 12.08.
In the 4x100 relay, the team of Stephen McCurdy, Lazear, Laing and Chasen Blue placed eighth in 50.61.
In the 4x100 weight person relay, the team of Alec Reynolds, William Kline, Tim Good and Ben Kinonen placed second in 54.69.
In the 4x200 relay, the team of McCurdy, Lazear, Laing and Blue placed seventh in 1:43.03.
In the 4x800 relay, the team of Cody Evans, Lucas Heaverlo, Evan Havick and Austin Cline placed sixth in 9:44.77.
In the shuttle hurdle relay the team of Schreck, T.J. Hockenson, Aaron Cain and Nance placed sixth in 1:13.46.
In the medley relay, the team of McCurdy, Laing, Chase Altenhofen and Cody Evans placed fifth in 4:02.63.

Tennis Team Loses to Davis County

April 4th the Chargers took on conference opponent Davis County, but failed to come up with a win.  Willie Felderman, Kody Jones and Quinn Storm each picked up singles wins in a 6-3 loss to the Mustangs.  Davis County is the defending SCC Champions and they returned five of their six varsity positions including their #1, 2 and 3 players.  In the #1 singles match, Felderman routed Damon Dixon, 8-2.  Felderman's serve was on and his shots were precise in the match.  At #2 Jones got his second win with another exciting come from behind victory with a 9-8 win over Park Mikels.  Kody fell behind 3-7 but adjusted his game, but fought hard to bring the match to an 8-8 tie.  He won the tiebreaker, 7-5, to win the match.  At #3, Quinn Storm, who is Huinter's brother, beat Sam Johnson, 8-5.  At #5, Chase Fletcher lost to Clayton Hulsizer, 10-8.  At #6, Joseph Hixenbaugh lost to Coleton Roberts, 8-6.  Davis dominated the doubles matches, winning all three.

Lady Chargers Open Tennis Season with loss at Clarke

The Chariton girls tennis team opened their season with a tough test against defending South Central Conference champion, Clarke, at Osceola April 2.  The Lady Chargers battled hard but came up a little short, losing 9-0.  Rachel Longley lost to Kylar McCann, 8-0.  Emily McRoberts lost to Libby Bemis, 8-0.  Sheena Savage lost by an 8-1 score to Tracy Morgan.  Aspen Koehn lost to Cassidy Bierbrodt, 8-2.  Julie Wessel lost to Kacey Klemesrud, 8-0.  Talia Lerner lost to Macey Snell, 8-2.

Seuferer 5th in Shot Put, Fuhs 5th in Discuss

Girls track team competed at Knoxville Relays, April 6th.  The girls placed fifth overall as a team with 63 points.  Allyson Showers placed second in the high jump with a jump of 4'10".  Kelli Lahart placed third in the 200 meters in 28.83.  She also placed fifth in the 100 in 13.33.  In the shot put, Emily Seuferer placed fifth with a throw of 32'6½".  Emma Fuhs didn't place with a throw of 27'4".  In the discus, Fuhs placed fifth with a throw of 82'4".  Arnold didn't place with a throw of 67'3".  In the long jump, Lahart placed seventh with a jump of 14'10".

Girls track team met at the Centerville Relays April 4.  The Lady Chargers did very well with second place finishes in the high jump and the 200 and a third place finish in the 100.  They also had a fourth place finish in the 100 meter hurdles, a fifth place finish in the shuttle hurdle relay and a sixth place finish in the long jump.
Kellie Lahart placed second in the 200 in 28.29.  She also placed third in the 100 in 13.43 and sixth in the long jump of 14'3".  Allyson Showers placed second in the high jump with a jump of 4'10".  Maria Blong placed fourth in the 100 meter hurdles in 17.48.  In the shot put, Emily Seuferer had a throw of 31'3", Emma Fuhs had a throw of 25'5" and Britany White had a throw of 24'4".  In the discus, Fuhs had a throw of 88'10".  Carley Arnold had a throw of 73' and Nikki Vande Lune had a throw of 65'9".  In the high jump, Brittany Currie had a jump of 4'4".  In the long jump, Delaney Richards had a jump of 12'10½"

AAU State Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena

Ruepke Wins Corn Cob Nationals

Gabe Ruepke was the 80 pound champion at the Corn Cob Nationals at the Jacobson Center in Des Moines on March 17.  Ruepke also placed fifth at 75 pounds at the AAU State Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Varsity Charger Tennis Team Falls to Clarke 6-3

On a cool, sunny day the Chariton boys' tennis team began their season with a 6-3 loss to Clarke at Chariton on April 2.  Even though they lost, in singles play, Willie Felderman picked up his 36th straight dual win with an 8-3 win over Colin Morris.  Willie is Chariton's #1 singles player.  #2 player, Kody Jones also was victorious with a 9-7 win over Jared Jamison.  Jones was down 3-7 but battled back to win 9-7.  Hunter Storm lost to Yahia Aly, 8-2 and Quinn Storm lost to Johannes Zehntor, 8-2.  Chase Fletcher lost to Jacob Redman, 8-4.  Joseph Hixenbaugh lost to Ali Aly, 8-2.
In doubles play, Chariton's #1 team of Jones/Hunter Storm lost to Morris/Jamison, 8-2, Felderman/Hixenbauggh won against Yahia Aly/Zehnter, 8-6, Quinn Storm/Fletcher lost to Redman/Ali Aly 8-1.

Iowa State Honor Bands

CHS Students take part in Central, Drake and Iowa State Honor Bands

The Central College Music Department hosted the High School Honor Band Jan. 24th, at Douwstra Auditorium on the Central College Campus in Pella.  The Chariton High School Band had a number of students accepted for participation in this honor band.  They were Kellie Lahart, senior, flute; Allyson Showers, junior, flute; Mikaela Plank, sophomore, clarinet; Kasey Lahart, sophomore, clarinet; Maddy Shelton, senior, bass clarinet; Zachary Fisher, junior, baritone saxophone; and Joseph Hixenbsugh, junior, trumpet.

The CHS students rehearsed in the morning and the afternoon with other students from the area for the Central College Honor Band and played in the evening concert at 7 p.m.
Three CHS band students were selected to participate in the Iowa State University Cyclone Honor Band Friday and Saturday, Feb.1 and Feb. 2.  They were Kellie Lahart, senior flute; Laura Tordoff, junior, alto saxophone; and Kssey Lahart, sophomore, clarinet.  The Honor Band rehearsals were held Friday and Sturday in the music building on the ISU csmpus.  The performance took place in Cy Stephens Auditorium in Ames Saturday afternoon, Feb. 2.  
On Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, four CHS students were selected to participate in the Drake University Honor Band in Des Moines.  They were Kellie Lahart, senior, flute; Zachary Fisher, junior, baritone saxophone; Laura Tordoff, junior, alto saxophone; and Mikaela Plank, sophomore, clarinet.
The students rehearsed on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 30 and Dec 1, in the music building at Drake University and the concert was in the Performing Arts Hall on Saturday evening.
CHS Band Instructor Diane Tordoff, and some of the band students traveled to Osceola to participate in the Iowa High School Music Association State Solo/Ensemble Festival. Students played a solo or duet for a judge and were then given a rating for their performance.  The students receiving a #1 rating were Serina Hinman, senior, flute solo; Kellie Lahart, senior, flute solo; Allyson Showers, junior, flute solo; Laura Tordoff, junior, alto saxophone solo; Mikaela Plank, sophomore, clarinet solo; Ashley Batty, sophomore, and Shantie Chance, sophomore, clarinet duet. 
The students receiving an #2 rating were Sara Foxhoven, senior, flute solo; Talia Lerner, senior, euphonium solo; Jonathon Wilson, senior, timbale and snare solos; Kasey Lahrt, sophomore, clarinet solo; and Kellie Lahart, senior and Allyson Showers, junior, a flute duet.
"I want to congratulate and thank these students for accepting a challenge, practicing extra, rising to the occasion and making me very proud," Tordoff said.

Lahart Wins Gold Medal at State Olympics


The Special Olympics State competition was held in Iowa City March 16th.  Carla Lahart (pictured) won a gold medal for Rhythmic Gymnastics.  She is the daughter of Joe and Lori Weber and John and Bethany Lahart.

The youth were treated to lunch and Andy gave a talk on the Honey Creek resort.  It was very interesting and they learned a lot about the facility.  They were each given a round of golf or treated to lunch at the restaurant.  They all felt we are very lucky to have this so close to us here in Southern Iowa.  Thank you Andy Woodrick and Honey Creek Resort.
