Ryan Jones Places Third at SCC Tournament

Chariton sophmore Ryan Jones earned all conference honors with a third-place finish in singles play at the SCC Tournament in Knoxville.  The top three finishers in singles and doubles make all-conference.  Jones was the only sophomore to make all-conference.
After receiving first round bye, Jones beat Noah Belt of Albia in the quarterfinals, 10-6.  He lost to Centerville senior Michael Starcevich in the semifinals, 10-4.  "It was a great game with long rallies.  Michael is one of the best athletes of any sport in the SCC," Chariton Head Coach Mark Felderman said.

Jones won the consolation match when Davis County's Coty Good withdrew from the tournament.  "Ryan has improved so much.  Last year he picked up a racquet for the first time and played JV most of the season.  This year he's All-SCC, that's pretty good.  Ryan works really hard in the off season and he really pays attention to instructions.  He is very coachable.  e will be a conference champion," Coach Felderman said.
Only seven freshmen entered the SCC Tournament, five of which were from Chariton.  The other tournament singles player from Chariton, Lucas Hoeger, was defeated in the first round by Clarke senior Holden Heweitt, 10-1.  In doubles play, the team of Nathan Kalsem and Andrew VanDenTop lost to the team of Brady Sweet and Spencer Varner of Centerville, 10-5.  The team of Michael Lawrence and Caleb Schrodt lost to the team of Stone Sample and Bryce Vineyard of Davis County, 10-2.
"It has been a tough season for the team this year, both won-loss wise and weather wise.  They did however gain varsity experience that will pay off down the road.  I know several are planning to attend tennis camps this summer.  It has been a delight to step in to help and coach these young men this spring.  Being a small squad, we worked with the girls quite a bit too.  Coach Chelsy Arnold is building a good team for the future.  It was a lot of fun to work with her and her team as well," Coach Felderman said.
