Varsity Charger boys fall to Carlisle in District opener

Marvin Scores 15, McCullough has 14 in Final Game

 Despite an outstanding effort, the boys season came to a close with a 53-43 loss to Carlisle at Carlisle in their first round 3A District game Monday night, Feb. 21.  Senior Jed Marvin led the Chargers in scoring with 15 points along with seven rebounds and two assists.  Fellow senior Cody McCullough also had a strong final game with a double-double of 14 points, 13 rebounds, one block and one assist.  Cole Pierschbacher who made a three-pointer early on to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead.  Marvin, who had struggled the past five games, came alive in the quarter scoring the first five points.  Pierschbacher finished with six points and six rebounds.  Brendan Laing had four points, four rebounds and two assists.  Ki Marvin had four points, one rebound and two assists.

Chariton had two second team ALL-SCC selections including senior forward Tanna Seuferer and junior guard Presley Swan.

Lady Chargers Fall to Carlisle

Just five points short.  The Chariton varsity Girls season came to an end with a 42-37 loss to Carlisle in their 3A Region 6 quarterfinal game at Chariton last Wednesday, Feb. 16.  The loss gave Chariton a final season record of 6-13.  Point guard Presley Swan had five points.

Oskaloosa Game on Senior Night

The Chariton varsity boys had a non-conference game against a very physical, tall Oskaloosa team at the Charger Dome Tuesday, Feb. 15.  It was Senior Night for the Chargers who trailed by 11 at halftime and fell to the Indians, 61-35.  The Chargers made an adjustment at the start of the second quarter, putting senior Cody McCullough at the high post, and letting him attack there.  Ki Marvin led Chariton in scoring with 10 points.  He also had two rebounds, one steal and one block.  McCullough had four points along with a team-high 10 rebounds, two steals, two assists and one block.  Brendan Laing had four points, five rebounds and one assist.  Jed Marvin had four points, two rebounds and one assist.  Cole Pierschbacher had three points, two rebounds and a steal.  Cody Carroll had two rebounds and one steal.

JV Charger Boys Beat Osky in Final

A balanced scoring attack and a ferocious performance on the boards lifted the Chariton JV boys to a  70-56 win over Oskaloosa at Chariton in their final game of the season Feb. 15.  Five chargers scored in double figures and Chariton pulled down 21 offensive  rebounds in the game.  The win gave Chariton a final record of 17-4.
Cameron Knust went 3-4 from three point range and led the Chargers in scoring with 17 points.  He also had three rebounds, four assists and four steals.  Cody Carroll had 10 points, five rebounds and one block.  Alex Wright had 10 points, three rebounds and one assist.

JV Chargers win two at I-35 Tournament

The JV boys beat Interstate 35, 59-41 in the first game and they clobbered Van Meter, 65-29 in the second game.
The JV Chargers have now won 10 games in a row and improved their record to 12-3 overall.
In both games, Chariton had a lot of players in the scoring column.  In the I-35 game, Cole Pierschbacher had 12 points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists..  Alex Wright had eight points, two rebounds, one steal and three assists.  Austin Peterson had five points, one rebound and one steal..  Camerson Knust had four points, three assists, one rebound, one block and one steal.   Cody Carroll had two points, four rebounds and one steal.  Cody had a team high of 18 points along with five rebounds, two steals and one assist in the Van Meter game.   Alex Wright had 12 points along with two rebounds and a steal.  Cameron Knust had 10 points, three rebounds and a steal.  Austin Peterson had two points, two rebounds and a steal.

Varsity Boys Valiant 4th Quarter Comeback Falls Short vs E-B

The Chariton Varsity Boys lost to Eddyville-Blakesburg 61-56 on February 10th.  It was another episode of "Heartbreak Hotel" for the Chargers, who have had five losses decided by five points or less.  They've also had eight losses determined by nine points or less.  Cody McCullough and Jed Marvin both had great fourth quarters to lead the Charger comeback.  Marvin's lay-up and free throw after he was fouled gave Chariton a one-point lead at 49-48.  Still leading by one, McCullough missed a two-shot foul, and the Rockets came down and hit a big three-pointer to take the lead for good.  It was a gutsy effort in the fourth quarter, especially by Wucely and Jed Marvin, who really hadn't played well until then.  McCullough had 12 points, four rebounds, four steals, one assist and one block.  Jed Marvin had 12 points, six rebounds, three steals and three assists.  Cole Pierschbacher had four points, two rebounds and a block.  Tyler Knust had two rebounds and Ki Marvin had one rebound and one assist.

Turnovers Hurt 9th Charger Boys in Loss to Carlisle 47-25

Very physical play and too many turnovers were two keys in the Chariton freshmen boys loss to Carlisle recently.  The Chargers had 15 turnovers in the first half and trailed 31-8 at halftime.  They played better in the second half, but it wasn't quite enough to pull out the "W".  Alec Wright had four rebounds, one assist and one block.

Shooting, Turnovers Hurt Varsity Girls against Grinnell

Just wo nights after making history with an impressive performance against Fairfield, the Chariton varsity girls had a disappointin performance with a 55-35 loss at Grinnell las Thursday night, February 10th.  Presley Swan had six points.

JV Charger Boys Hold Off Eddyville

The Chariton JV Boys held off a fourth quarter rally by Eddyville-Blakesburg and emerged with a 44-38 win at Chariton last Thursday, February 10th.  With the win, the Chargers moved to .800 on the season at 16-4.  Cody Carroll led the team in scoring with 10 points along with seven rebounds, one assist and one steal.  Alex Wright had eight points, three rebounds, one assist and one block.  Cameron Knust had five points, one rebound and three steals.

Super Offensive and great Defensive Night brings 9th Boys Win

A super offensive night by Brett Braida and great defensive games by Christian Bengtson and Willie Felderman helped lift the Chariton ninth grade boys' basketball team to a 45-31 win over Eddyville-Blakesburg at Chariton on February 10th.  Alec Reynolds had two points and one rebound.

Chariton Varsity Girls Played Best Game of Season against Fairfield

Some history was made during the game against Fairfield as the girls beat them 62-35.  Layne Grgurich had the first triple double in Chariton five-on-five school history with 17 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.  Presley Swan had 11 points.  "This was by far our best game of the year.  I thought all of the girls played extremely hard, shot the ball well and  had a good game," Chariton Head Coach Lee Sandy said.

Varsity Boys Lose Close One To Fairfield at the Charger Dome on Feb. 8th.  The Chargers lost to the Trojans, 55-53, and the loss was their second in two days decided by three points or less.  Cody McCullough led the Chargers in scoring with 16 points along with seven rebounds, one assist, two steals and one block.  Cameron Knust's shot from the elbow at 15 feet was short, and Fairfield escaped with the two-point win.  Cole Pierschbacher had 11 points, five rebounds and two steals.  Ki Marvin had seven points.  Cameron Knust had five points and one steal.  Jed Marvin had three points.  Tyler Knust had one rebound on the night.  

Fresh/Soph girls lose at Fairfield

The Chariton freshman and sophomore girls' basketball team lost a close game to Fairfield at Fairfield, 26-22, Tuesday, February 8th.  Chariton had a balanced scoring attack with five players scoring between two and six points.  Madison Briggs had one rebound.

JV Boys Coast to Win Over Fairfield

Tough defense and efficient offense were keys to the Chariton JV Boys' 52-36 win over Fairfield at Chariton February 8th.  Alex Wright led Chariton in scoring with 13 points along with two rebounds, four steals and two assists.  Cody Carroll had six points, one rebound, one steal and one block.  Cameron Knust had four points, two rebounds, six steals and five assist.  Austin Peterson had two rebounds and two assists.

Varsity Chargers Fall Short against Newton in OT

The Chariton Varsity Boys played another powerful opponent very toughtbut came up just short in a 51-48 overtime loss to Class 4A Newton at Chariton February 7th.  Ki Marvin had a big night for Chariton with a team-high 18 points, three rebounds and one steal.  Marvin drained four three point baskets and went 4-9 from three-point range and 6-11 from inside the arc.  Jed Marvin scored the first basket of the game, his only points of the night to give Chariton a 2-0 lead.  The first quarter was a back and forth battle with Newton holding a 12-10 lead after one period.  Ki Marvin sparked the third quarter offensive output and the Charger defense stifled the Cardinals.  Ki Marvin nailed a huge three point basket with just over 30 seconds left to tie the game at 43 apiece.  Newton tried to hold the ball for the final shot, but Jed Marvin stole a pass at the top of the wing and drove to the other side of the court.  Marvin's pull-up three-point basket at the buzzer clanged off the back iron to send the game into overtime.  Chariton scored first in overtime when Cody McCullough made one free throw when he was fouled while rebounding a missed Charger shot.  Chariton had to scramble at the end to force a shot off, and McCullough's throw hit the front of the rim to give Newton the win.  McCullough finished with eight points, seven rebounds and one assist.  Cole Pierschbacher had six points, three rebounds, one block and one steal.  Jed Marvin had two points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal.  Cameron Knust had three rebounds.

JV Boys have Tough Win over Newton

Tough "D" lifts JV boys to big win over Newton.  JV Boys now 14-4 overall.  A sterling game defensively and at the line helped lift the Chariton JV boys to a 57-45 win over Newton at Chariton on Monday February 7th.  Alex Wright had a strong game as he went 3-6 from three-point range and led the team in scoring with 16 points along with two rebounds and one steal.  Cameron Knust had four points, two blocks, three steals and two assists.  Cody Carroll had two points, one rebound and two assists. 

Chariton Freshmen Boys win 39-37 over Newton

It's who has the lead at the end that counts.  That was the story of the Chariton freshmen boys in their win over Newton at the Charger Dome on February 7th.  Head Coach Jay Pierschbacher said they played hard throughout the game.  Alec Reynolds had four points, two rebounds and two steals.

McCullough Scores 18 in Loss to Centerville

The Chariton Varsity boys gave co-conference leader Centerville quite a battle before falling, 53-43, at Centerville February 4th.  The game was much closer than when the teams met in Chariton earlier this season.  With the loss, Chariton fell to 2-7 in conference play with one week left.  The Chargers were also 4-10 overall after this game.  Senior Cody McCullough had a team-high 18 points along with six rebounds, three steals and one block.  Ki Marvin had five points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Jed Marvin had four points, six rebounds, one steal and three assists.  Cole Pierschbacher had one rebound and one steal.  Cameron Knust had one assist.

Strong 1st Half Lifts JV Boys over Centerville 38-21

A barrage of scoring in the first half was key in the Chariton JV boys 38-21 win at Centerville this on February 4th.  Cody Carroll had six points, six rebounds and one steal.  Cameron Knust had four points, four rebounds, two steals and two assists.  Alex Wright had three points, four rebounds and one assist.

Varsity Girls Beat Centerville in Double OT

The Chariton Varsity Girls came through in a big way on Senior Night with a nail-biting  57-50 win over Centerville in double overtime at the Charger Dome on February 11th.  The key to the win according to Coach Lee Sandy was Chariton's rebounding, which was phenomenal as they pulled down an astounding 19 offensive boards and out-rebounded the Redettes, 40-10, in the game.  Junior Presley Swan hit a couple of threes in the first quarter and went 4-4 at the line in the second overtime to help Chariton seal the win.  Swan finished with a team high 14 points.

A dominant second half propelled the Chariton Freshmen and sophomore girls' basketball team to a 44-22 win over Centerville at Chariton February 4th.  Madison Briggs had one rebound, one steal and two assists.

JV Boys Fall to Bondurant-Farrar 63-57

The Chariton JV boys had their 10-game winning streak snapped with a 63-57 loss at B-F on February 3rd.  The Chargers lost despite strong games from Cameron Knust and Bryce Cunningham.  Knust went 4-7 from three-point range and led the team with 19 points and also had four rebounds, three assists and one steal.  Alex Wright had seven points, one rebound, two steals and one assist.  Cody Carroll had five points and four rebounds.  Austin Peterson had one rebound and one steal.

CHS Varsity Wrestlers Win two, lose one

CHS Varsity wrestlers beat Eddyville, Lynnville-Sully, lost to Martensdale on January 25th.  They beat host Eddyville-Blakesburg and Lynneville-Sully, 48-34, and fell just short against Martensdale-St. Mary's, losing 41-36.

The match against Eddyville began at 135 where Stephen McCurdy won by forfeit.  Against Martensdale-St. Mary's, Stephen McCurdy won by forfeit at 135 to tie the match at 36 apiece with one match left.
