Chariton Varsity Volleyball Loss at Centerville

Season closer brings a 3-1 loss at Centerville.  With the loss, Chariton ended the season with a 5-22 record.
Chariton had 37 digs as a team. Kinser led the team with 10.  Leah Dow had nine and Curran had seven.  Briellyn Black had four.  Dow had one assist.

CHS Students Inducted Into National Honor Society

Twenty-eight students were inducted into the National Honor Society.  Current members called up the new inductees and presented them with a wooden key to be worn the rest of the week.

Chargers lose to Centerville in Season Ending Game

 A very exciting game took place in Centerville in the season finale.  The game deadlocked at 14-14 entering the fourth quarter, but the Big Reds outscored the Chargers 21-7, with a final score of 35-21.Three fumbles for Chariton along with two big screen plays they gave up for touchdowns made the difference.  The team rushed for 89 yards on 36 carries.  Laing led the team with 47 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns.  Senior linebacker, Ronnie Christensen had three solos and seven assists.  Chasen Blue's kick was partially blocked but still sailed through the uprights.  Blake Paige blanketed Hawkins on a pass forcing an incompletion,. Alec Wright had 2 solos, 5 assists.  Paige had 2 solos, 2 assists and Cody Carroll had 6 assists.

Varsity Chargers fall to Oskaloosa

Chargers experienced a 55-6 loss to the Oskaloosa Indians at Reynolds Field.  The Chargers had an early lead, but after a 70 yard touchdown by the Indians, lost their momentum.  With the loss, Chariton fell to 1-7 overall.  Matt Schultz excelled again during this disappointing game.  He had 17-38 rushing.  Cody Carroll had 2 solos and 6 assists.  Ronnie Christensen had 2 solos, 3 assists and one fumble.  Blake Paige had 2 assists.  Alex Wright had 2 assists.

JV Charger Football Team Crushes Mt. Pleasant

A 37-6 win over Mt. Pleasant at Chariton Monday night, was achieved after a fabulous start and a terrific team effort.  After one period, the JV team had roared to a 23-0 lead.  With the win, the JV team moved over .500 to 4-3 overall.  Chasen Blue and Brett Braida each scored a two-point conversion.  The offensive line of Ethan Askland, Greg Beard, Carl Williams, Steve Zinchenko, Alec Reynolds and Cameron Knutz really dominated and opened big holes all night.  Kinonen rushed for 55 yards on eight carries.  Blue had 37 yards on one carry.  Cole Graves had eight yards on two carries.  Chasen Blue caught two passes for 33  yards.  Reynolds had two solo tackels, two assists and a fumble recovery.  Austin Peterson had one solo tackle.  Beard had three assisted tackles and a tackle for a loss.  Graves had one sack.

Chargers lose in Game Against Mt. Pleasant

Chariton lost 41-6 to Mt. Pleasant in a district loss.  An early turnover that led to a touchdown and a blocked point that led to a field goal and poor playing were all keys in the loss.  One positive was that Chariton outgained Mt. Pleasant on the ground.  Chariton rushed for 133 yards on 25 carries.  Matt Schultz led the team with 86 yards on 24 carries.  In the final two minutes of the first half, the Chargers put together a nice drive that wound up with no points from it.  On a third and two from their own 49, Schultz ran to the Panther 46 for a first down.  The Chargers seemed to be knocking on the door as Schultz carried it down to the five.  After a penalty, they tried to attempt a field goal but Chasen Blue's kick was short to end the half with Mt. Pleasant leding, 31-0.  Tackles Cody Carroll had 4 assists.  Ronnie Christensen had 2 assists.  Blake Paige had 2 solos and 2 assists.  Chasen Blue had 3 assists. and Alex Wright had 1 solo, 3 assists and 1 pressure.

On October 6, 2011 Senior night for the Lady Chargers, they played hard against Albia but came up short losing 3-0.  The scores of the match were 15-25, 8-25, 21-25.  Senior Briellyn Black hits a ball back during the final game against Albia in the picture above.

King and Queen for Chariton HS Homecoming

Congratulations goes out to our hometown young man, Cole Pierschbacher of Russell who was crowned Chariton High School's Homecoming King along with his Queen, Amber Sanders.  Cole's parents are Jay and Kim Pierschbacher.  What an honor.

JV Chargers Play Hard and Comeback in Second Half

The JV Chargers trailed at the end of the first half, 14-0, but outscored the Centerville Big Reds, 31-14 by the end of the game.  Stephen McCurdy had an out-standing game with 157 yards rushing on 25 carries and four touchdowns.  He also had one two-point conversion.  With the win the JV team moved to 3-3 overall.  The Chargers amassed 307 total yards including 194 yards rushing on 40 carries.  They also had 113 yards passing.  Chasen Blue rused for 48 yards on four carries.  Cole Graves caught one pass for eight yards and Lane Blue kicked an extra point.  Chasen  Blue had four solo tackles and a fumble recovery.  Austin Peterson had four solo tackles.  Greg Beard had three solo tackles and two and a half sacks.  Graves had five solo tackles.  Alec Reynolds had two solo tackles and one and a half sacks. 

9th Charger Football Team lose to Ft. Madison 34-14

The game played at Jim Youel Field in Ft. Madison, proved to be too much for the 9th Chargers, as they experienced another loss.  The boys gained an early lead but couldn't hold it.  It was a very disppointing game for the young men as they had hoped to have a shot at this one.  After making a lot of mistakes, such as penalties, missed tackles and poor execution on offense, their enthusiasm began to fade.  Sawyer Dow caught one pass for minus five yards.  The Chargers committed eight penalties which lost them 65 yards.

Girls X-C Team Runs Well at Centerville

At the Centerville Invitational, Tuesday September 27, the Chariton Girls Cross Country runners, finished 12th overall out of 22 teams with 393 points.

In the varsity race, Abbie Schultz led Chariton placing 73rd overall in 21:52.  Renae Beard did not run.

JV Football Team Loses to Fairfield

On a very wet night, the Chariton JV football team lost at Fairfield, 14-6, Sept. 26.  The Chargers trailed 14-0 at halftime and got on the board with a Stephen McCurdy touchdown in the fourth quarter.  With the loss, the Chariton team moved to 2-3 overall,.

They were hurt by two costly fumbles in the pouring down rain.  Alex Wright had five solo tackles, four assists and one tackle for a loss.  Austin Peterson had four assists and one solo tackle.  Greg Beard had three assists and Alec Reynolds had two solo tackles, three assists and one tackle for a loss

Chargers Struggle in Homecoming Loss to Fairfield

 A 49-7 loss to Fairfield on homecoming Friday night, was a disappointment.  With the loss, Chariton fell to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in 3A District  7 play.  Matt Schultz had a good night rushing with 91 yards on 17 carries.  Chasen Blue kicked an extra point.  Blue had 5 solos, and 4 assists.  Blake Paige had 2 solos and 2 assists and forced a fumble.  Ronnie Christensen had 3 solos, 6 assists, and a fumble recovery.  Cody Carroll had 3 assists.

Football Captains and Bob Cain

Longtime Chariton Coach Bob Cain was honored for his 50 years of coaching at the homecoming assembly and had the track at Reynolds Field named after him.  A story about Cain and his career in Chariton will be in an upcoming issue of the Chariton Newspapers. (Bill Howe story and pictures)

Chargers Hold Off Fort Madison for 1st Win of 2011

In the picture to the above, Matt Schultz rushes around right end for a five-yard touchdown in the second quarter.  Schultz rushed for 139 yards on 35 carries and two touchdowns on the night for the Chargers, who got the first win of the season.  The chargers are now 1-5 over all and play at Mr. Pleasant this week.

The Chargers held off a furious fourth quarter comeback by Ft. Madison to get their first win of the season, 23-15, against the Bloodhounds at Jim Youel Field in Ft. Madison Friday night, September 30th.  Matt Schultz ran hard and the offensive line had the best game blocking they've had by far the whole year.  Schultz topped the century mark rushing with 139 yards on 35 carries and two touchdowns.  Ronnie Christensen played spectacular.  Chasen Blue kicked a field goal.  An onside kick after the second touchdown was recovered by Chasen Blue
