Varsity Chargers win at Newton Tournament

1st Game Agains Independence

A pair of games was won by the Chariton varsity baseball team at Newton the weekend of June 15th.  Independence got globbered by Chariton losing by 16-0.  Chariton had 16 runs scored on 16 hits in this game.  The Chargers scored once in the first and exploded in the second with 12 runs to take a 13-0 lead.  Three more runs were earned in the fifth to clinch the win.  No hitters were achieved by TJ Hockenson and Ben Kinser on the mound.  Hockenson got the win since he was the starting pitcher and continued for four innings.  In those four innings he gave up no runs and no hits while striking out five and walking one.  In one inning, Kinser gave up no hits and no runs while striking out two and walking none.  
Second baseman, Lucas Heaverlo and Kinser each had three hit games.  Heaverlo went 3-3 with two doubles, a single, three runs scored and three RBI's.  Kinser went 3-4 with a double and two singles, three runs scored and two RBIs.  He also stole a base.  Right fielder Austin Peterson went 2-2 with a double, a single, a run scored, three RBIs and a walk.  Third baseman, Brett Braida went 2-3 with a triple, a single, two runs scored and an RBI.  Hockenson went 2-4 with a double, a single and a run scored.  Center fielder Token Hall went 1-2 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.  Shortstop Jordan Baughman went 1-3 with a double, a run scored and RBI.  Designated hitter Austin Ritenour went 1-1 with a single, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.  Catcher Alex Wright went 1-3 with a double.  First baseman Charlie Palmer went 0-2 with an RBI.  Brett Hardin and Spencer Sherrick each went 0-1 with a run scored.  Aaron Cain went 0-1.  Adam Kaska went 0-1 with a walk.  Dustin Hardin went 0-1.  Ethan Payton drew a walk.

2nd Game Against Colfax-Mingo

Coming from behind, the Chargers beat Colfax-Mingo 6-3.  A home run was hit by Austin Peterson and he went 3-4 with a home run, double, and a single along with a run scored and four RBIs.   The fourth inning brought 2 scores for Colfax-Mingo to take the lead.  In the fifth, the Chargers came back with four runs to take back the lead, 4-2.  The Chargers got the win in the seventh when Colfax-Mingo was outscored 2-1.
Palmer, Braida and Baughman each pitched for the Chargers with Palmer getting the win.  Two runs, (both earned on four hits) were given up by Palmer in four innings and he struck out four and walked four.  Braida went two and 2/3 innings and gave up one earned run on four hits while striking out two and walking one.    Baughman pitched 1/3 of an inning and gave up no runs and no hits while striking out none and walking none.
Offensively, the Chargers pounded out six runs on 11 hits.  Baughman went 2-4 with a double and a single and a run scored.  Ritenour went 2-3 with a double and a single and a run scored.  Kinser went 1-3 with a single and a stolen base.  Heaverlo and Hall each went 1-4 with a single and a run scored.  Wright went 1-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.  Hockenson went 0-4 with an RBI and Braida went 0-4.
