Varsity Charger Girls More Efficient at the Plate in Loss to Pella
The Chariton varsity girls put forth a strong performance in a 4-2 loss at Pella June 18. Chariton was more efficient at the plate with just one strikeout and scoring two runs. Chariton had three hits and committed just one error defensively. Designated hitter Sarah Fuhs went 2-2 with a double, a single and a sacrifice. Second baseman Micaela Folkerts scored both runs for Chariton and went 1-2 with a single, two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base.
Pella scored once in the bottom of the first and once in the third to take a 2-0 lead. Chariton got on the board with one run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 2-1. Folkerts reached base on a single and scored with two outs on a mishandled grounder by the Pella third baseman. First baseman Kylie Bengtson had the RBI.
Pella scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 4-1. Chariton added one more run in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-2 but could get no closer. Folkerts reached base by a walk to start the sixth and score on a sharp hit grounder to right field. Kylie Bengston had the RBI in this inning as well.
Ellie Bengtson went the distance on the mound and took the loss. In six innings she gave up four runs, all earned, on six hits while striking out five and walking two. She also gave up two sacrifices.
Left fielder Kourtney Nichols and Ellie Bengston each went 0-4. Kylie Bengtson went 0-3 with two RBIs and she reached base by error once. Center fielder Delaney Richard went 0-3 and reached base by error once. Third baseman Maria Blong went 0-3. Catcher Emma Fuhs and shortstop Alexis Curran each went 0-2 with a sacrifice. Emily Grismore started in right field and Chelsea McGee played as a courtesy runner.
Chariton had 18 put outs and 13 assists as a team. Emma Fuhs led the team in put outs with seven and Kylie Bengtson had six. Folkerts had two and Grismore, Ellie Bengtson and Curran each had one. Ellie Bengtson led the team in assists with eight. Curran had two and Folkerts, Blong and Kylie Bengtson had one apiece.
