Varsity girls come from behind to beat Knoxville, 9-8, at Chariton on June 25th. The bottom of the seventh saw the Chariton girls trailing 8-5, but they were able to score four runs in the seventh to get the win. Knoxville scored three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead. Chariton responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 3-2. The game became tied, 3-3, when the Chargers scored once in the fourth.Knoxville scored once in the fifth and Chariton scored twice to take a 5-4 lead. The game became tied again, 5-5, in the sixth when Knoxville scored once. The Panthers scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-5 lead. Then the best inning for the Chargers, the bottom of the seventh, got the win.
Right fielder Emily Grismore led off the seventh inning with a walk. With one out, pitcher Ellie Bengtson reached base on a base hit with Sarah Fuhs coming in as a courtesy runner. Pinch hitter Maria Blong hit a single to load the bases. First baseman Kylie Bengtson hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Grismore to make it an 8-6 game. With two outs, designated hitter, Nikki Vande Lune, hit a ball that was mishandled to score Fuhs and Blong and tie the game at eight apiece. Chelsea McGee came in as a pinch runner for Vande Lune. Catcher Emma Fuhs hit a ball that was mishandled by the center fielder and McGee scored from first for the winning run.
Ellie Bengston went the distance on the mound and got the win. In seven innings she gave up eight runs, six earned, on eight hits while striking out two and walking two. Chariton overcame five errors committed defensively.
At the plate, Chariton had 11 hits and just one strikeout. Emma Fuhs went 2-4 with a single, a double, an RBI and a walk. She also reached base by error twice. Second baseman Micaela Folkerts went 2-4 with a single, double, and she reached base by error once. Ellie Bengston went 2-4 with two singles, an RBI and she reached base by error once. Chariton had 21 put outs and 10 assists as a team.
