The Chariton varsity baseball team swept a doubleheader with Fairfield at Fairfield June 18th. The Chargers won the two games, 15-7 and 4-3.
Chariton 15 Fairfield 7
In the 15-7 win, Chariton cranked out 15 runs on 19 hits. Alex Wright and T.J. Hockenson each had four-hit games for Chariton. Wright went 4-5 with four singles, four runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen bsse. Third baseman Brett Braida went 3-4 with three singles, a run scored and two RBIs.
Fairfield scored once in the first but the Chargers answered with two runs in the second and eight in the third to take a 10-2 lead. The Trojans outscored the Chargers 4-1 in the fourth to cut the lead to 11-5. Fairfield scored two more runs in the fifth to make the score 11-7. However the Chargers responded with two more runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to get the win.
Wright, Austin Peterson and Ben Kinser each pitched for Chariton. Wright got the win going three innings and giving up one run, which was earned on three hits while striking out one and walking one. Peterson went two and 1/3 innings and gave up no runs and two hits while striking out one and walking none. Kinser went one and 2/3 innings and gave up six runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out none and walking two.
Shortstop Jordan Baughman went 2-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk. Center fielder Token Hall went 2-3 with two singles, a run scored, an RBI and two walks. Kinser went 1-4 with a single, a run scored and two RBIs. Second baseman Lucas Heaverlo went 1-5 with a single, a run scored and a stolen base. Peterson went 1-5 with a single, a run scored and an RBI. Catcher Austin Ritenour went 1-5 with a single and an RBI.
Chariton 4 Fairfield 3
The second game went extra innings with Chariton winning 4-3 in nine innings. Baughman had a home run for Chariton going 2-4 with a home run, a double, a run scored and three RBIs. Ritenour went 3-3 with three singles and a run scored. Chariton scored once in the top of the first and the Trojans scored in the bottom of the third to tie the game at one apiece. The Trojans scored once more in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Chariton scored twice more in the top of the sixth to regain the lead, 3-2 and the Trojans answered with one more run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at three apiece and force extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth inning, Chariton scored once in the top of the ninth to take a 4-3 lead. Chariton held Fairfield scoreless in the bottom of the ninth to get the win.
Braida and Baughman each pitched for Chariton. Baughman got the win going three innings and giving up one run, which was earned, on four hits while striking out three and walking one. Braida went six innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits while striking out none and walking one.
Kinser went 1-3 with a single. Heaverlo went 1-4 with a single and two runs scored. Peterson went 1-4 with a double and an RBI. Braida went 0-3 with a walk. Hall, Wright and Hockenson each went 0-4. Charlie Palmer played at first base.
