Varsity Chargers Move to 6-0 with sweep of DC


The Chariton varsity baseball team kept rolling with a sweep of Davis County in a doubleheader at Chariton Monday night.  The Chargers routed the Mustangs, 10-2, in the first game and 13-3 in the nightcap to improve to 6-0.  In the first game, Chariton jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first inning.  Token Hall led off the inning with a walk.  Lucas Heaverlo doubled to score Hall.  Austin Peterson hit a triple to score Heaverlo and give the Chargers a 2-1 lead.  Jordan Baughman and Alex Wright each struck out.  Ben Kinser was up next and doubled to deep center field to score Peterson to put Chariton up 3-1.  Brett Braida doubled to score Kinser to put the Chargers up 3-1.  T.J. Hockenson flied out to end the inning.  In the top of the second, pitcher Charlie Palmer struck out three of the four hitters he faced to keep the score at 4-1.  In the bottom of the second, both Austin Ritenour and Hall flew out to start the inning.  Heaverlo drew a walk and Peterson smacked a double to score Heaverlo and give Chariton a 5-1 lead.  Wright led off the bottom of the third with a single to left field.  Kinser was up next and grounded out which advanced Wright to third.  With one out Brett Braida smacked a base hit to score Wright and put the Chargers up 6-1.
The Chargers added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 10-1.  The Mustangs scored a run in the top of the seventh but could get no closer.
The Chargers were equally impressive in winning the nightcap 13-3.  The Chargers pounded out 13 hits and received outstanding pitching from Wright and Baughman on the mound to complete the sweep.  Wright got the win on the mound.  In four innings, he gave up three unearned runs on five hits while striking out four and walking three.  In two innings, Baughman gave up one hit and no runs while striking out four and walking none.
