Charger Boys Soccer Team Participate in Nodaway Valley Tournament

The Chariton varsity boys soccer team traveled to Greenfield for the Nodaway Valley Tourney April 12.  The Chargers made it to the championship game before losing to finish second.  Chariton beat Nodaway Valley, 5-1, in the first game and lost to West Central Stuart in the championship, 2-0.  The varsity Chargers are now 2-2 on the season.
  Chariton 5  Nodaway Valley 1
Chariton won the toss against Nodaway Valley and elected to take the wind in the first half.  "We started a little flat and didn't take advantage of some good looks we had early in this game," Chariton Head Coach Jay Pierschbacher said.
About 15 minutes in Chariton started scoring.  Asa St. Lawrence scored three goals for the first hat trick of his high school career.  He also added an assist in this game.  Eduard Rodygin headed another goal into the net for his third goal of the year.  St. Lawrence was the one who served up the nice cross for Rodygin to head it in.
Timofey Timofeyev has played 150 minutes without letting a goal into the net.  The second half was pretty quiet.  Chariton scored an own goal in their own net in the 74th minute.  It wasn't long after this goal that Jon Hendricks was able to hit a nice low ball past Nodaway Valley's goalie for a score.
"Our defense is making good strides at becoming a defense that could be something to build around for the year,"  Coach Pierschbacher said.

West Central Stuart 2  Chariton  O
In the championship, the Chargers lost to West Central Stuart, 2-0, in a hard fought battle on a beautiful day.  It was the first time Chariton has been shutout this year.
"It was nice to take our team to championship of this tournament, but it was equally disappointing not to take the championship back home with us to Chariton.  We are making progress this year as we are coming off a winless season last year. and we want to be as good as we can be," Coach Pierschbacher said.
Chariton really struggled scoring last year as they finished with just five goals for the year.  This year they've scored 11 goals in four games.  "That being said, we were held scoreless for the first time in the championship game.  We were allowed only nine shots in this game and our possession time was way down in this game.  Progress has been made this year.  Now is when it gets tough because we have to continue to get better," Coach Pierschbacher said.
