7th Girls Red and White Teams Beat Davis County at Home

The Chariton seventh grade girls Red team beat Davis County, 22-20, at Chariton January 27th.  The win avenged a loss to the Mustangs earlier this season.  With the win, the Red team improved to 5-4-1.
Chariton came out playing hard, getting the opening tip and having the first chance to score.  But there was a lid on the basket as Chariton got numerous shots in the first quarter but trailed 4-0 after one period.  Chariton scored six points in the second period.and trailed 9-6 at halftime.  The Red team shot a little better in the second half and outscored the Mustangs 16-11 to win by two.  Chariton's defense and their ability to work the boards and get many put backs on a night when the shots just weren't falling were keys in their victory.
The Red team went 11-55 from the field, 20 percent.  They  struggled from the free throw line going 0-14.  Shayla Holoban was hard to stop down low and led the Red team in scoring with eight points.  She also had five rebounds and a steal.  Grace Bengtson had another nice floor game running the offense.  She committed only four turnovers and played good position defense.  She had four points and four steals.
Paige Burgett had four points, one rebound and three steals.  Erin Payton had four points and two steals.  "Paige played her usual high energy game.  Erin continues to play hard when she gets minutes and her shooting has really improved as the season has progressed," Chariton Head Coach Bruce Taylor said.
Natalie Ilyenko had two points and two rebounds.  Shelby Dobberthein had one rebound.  Breanna Ellis had two steals.  Alysha Shutt had one steal.
"This was a nice win to get us above 500 for the season and beat a team we lost to in early December," Coach Taylor said.
White Team Moves to  7-3
The White team also won, 14-7, to move to 7-3 on the season.  They also avenged a loss to Davis County in early December.
The White team shot well from the field going 7-21, 33 percent.  They trailed 5-4 at halftime but held Davis County to just two points in the second half to get the win.
Payton led the team in scoring with six points.  She made two shots from beyond the three-point line and also had one steal.  Macy Johnston had a nice game with four points, four rebounds and one steal.  "Macy continues to get better with her release point on her shot attempts," Coach Taylor said.
Natalie Ilyenko had two points, four rebounds and one steal.  Shutt had two points and one rebound.  Baylee Pollard had a nice floor game with two steals.  Leilani Plank had two steals and put a lot of pressure on defense from the point position.  Macey Beaty had one steal.  Mikenzy Beaty had one steal and ran the offense from the point.  Emily Shelton handled most of the team's out of bounds plays committing only one turnover.
"The team had less than 10 turnovers for the game and continues to improve on the little things we stress in practice," Coach Taylor said.

7th Boys Come From Behind to Defeat Davis County
The Chariton seventh grade boys scored a come from behind 36-34 win over Davis County in overtime at Bloomfield.
Chariton was down 22-16 at the half but they battled back with some defensive stops in the third quarter and held the Mustangs to just three points in the third period.  Nathan Blong had a double-double for Chariton with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
"Our kids actually had a three-point lead with about two and a half minutes to go, but we made some poor passes and forced shots we didn't need to take and allowed DC to tie the game at the end of regulation.  In the extra session, our kids really made some nice hard cuts on offense and did a better job of working for each other to take better care of the ball," Chariton Head Coach Mike Jones said.
"We did a poor job of identifying shooters early in the game and did a much better job of this in the second half.  Our kids rebounded well, not allowing Davis County to have many second and third opportunities.  Brady Hamilton did a very good job of being in good position to handle rebounds against taller opponents.  Nathan really brought us back early in the second half in being very aggressive in attacking the basket offensively," Coach Jones said.
Royce Stuart had 11 points and four rebounds.  Brady Hamilton had two points and five rebounds.  Nathan Weaver had two points and seven rebounds.
Brodey Johnson had one point and two rebounds.  Cameron McDonald had four rebounds.  Peyton Lane had two rebounds.
"I continue to be proud of how hard these kids are working and the progress they make," Coach Jones said.
B Team Falls to DC
The Chariton B team lost to Davis County, 25-10.  Micah Thatcher, Aaron Sullenger, Peyton Schafer, Colbie Werts and Matthew Stout each led the team with two points apiece.  Ty White and Chance Anderson had three rebounds apiece.  Jimmy Graham and Peyton Schaeffer had one rebound apiece.
"Once again, our lack of an offense hurt us.  We didn't handle Davis County's aggressive defense very well.  We didn't screen and we didn't make back door cuts.  I wasn't very pleased with our defensive effort or our rebounding tonight either.  We allowed quite a few DC layups without anyone being in position to help stop the attack.  Davis County out-rebounded us by a 3-1 margin, many of these on their offensive end, giving them extra attempts at the basket," Coach Jones said.
