There's a new youth volunteer group that's been formed to help out with community activities.  The group is called The Youth for the Chamber and it was started on March 1 by Chariton Chamber Executive Director, Shantel Dow, and Chariton resident, Cindy Laing.
The group is currently for students in 9-11 grades at Chariton High School and it has 10 members.  There will be 10 new members chosen each month for the first three months.
The ten members of the group are Leah Dow, Luiza Tsygipalo, Cierra Covington, Trevor Steinhausen, Robyn Allwood, Benjamin Cohen, Matt Bohl, Jonathon Wilson, Brendan Laing and Zach Fisher.
Dow explained why the program was initially started for 9-11 grades with seniors being added later.  "We started out having it for freshmen, sophomores and juniors because it's so close to the end of the school year.  But starting this fall, seniors will be able to join.
The activities the students will work on will be ones that are appropriate for students.  "Anybody in the community that has volunteer opportunities that would be appropriate for students can contact the Chamber office and we'll set up a working schedule."  Dow said.
This past Friday, Parents and Children First told Dow that they needed students to decorate the square in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month, which is April.  This Monday, April 4, six of the students in the group will decorate the square.
