Varsity Chargers Fall Short against Newton in OT

The Chariton Varsity Boys played another powerful opponent very toughtbut came up just short in a 51-48 overtime loss to Class 4A Newton at Chariton February 7th.  Ki Marvin had a big night for Chariton with a team-high 18 points, three rebounds and one steal.  Marvin drained four three point baskets and went 4-9 from three-point range and 6-11 from inside the arc.  Jed Marvin scored the first basket of the game, his only points of the night to give Chariton a 2-0 lead.  The first quarter was a back and forth battle with Newton holding a 12-10 lead after one period.  Ki Marvin sparked the third quarter offensive output and the Charger defense stifled the Cardinals.  Ki Marvin nailed a huge three point basket with just over 30 seconds left to tie the game at 43 apiece.  Newton tried to hold the ball for the final shot, but Jed Marvin stole a pass at the top of the wing and drove to the other side of the court.  Marvin's pull-up three-point basket at the buzzer clanged off the back iron to send the game into overtime.  Chariton scored first in overtime when Cody McCullough made one free throw when he was fouled while rebounding a missed Charger shot.  Chariton had to scramble at the end to force a shot off, and McCullough's throw hit the front of the rim to give Newton the win.  McCullough finished with eight points, seven rebounds and one assist.  Cole Pierschbacher had six points, three rebounds, one block and one steal.  Jed Marvin had two points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal.  Cameron Knust had three rebounds.
