The Chariton boys tennis team lost to a strong Albia team, 8-1, at Chariton Monday night. The young Charger team played well and their win came in the #6 varsity singles match where senior Joseph Hixenbaugh dominated sophomore Luke Sinclair in a 6-1 win.
"Joseph recently joined the team and played extremely well, especially at the net," Chariton Head Coach Mark Felderman said. Felderman is now the boys' team coach and will be for the rest of the season.
In the #1 varsity singles match, sophomore Ryan Jones, played senior Hobie Hein tough before losing, 6-1. "Ryan played well against the best #1 player in the SCC this year," Coach Felderman said.
In the #2 match, freshman Nathan Kalsem lost to senior Skylar Hoover, 6-1. In the #3 match, senior Zach Fisher battled back from an 0-4 deficit and won two games against Austin O'Leary before losing, 6-2. in the #4 match, freshman Andrew VanDenTop lost to Blake Lawless, 6-1. "Andrew struggled with his serve in this match but fought hard," Coach Felderman said. In the #5 match, freshman Michael Lawrence lost to Noah Belt, 6-0.
In doubles play, the most competitive match was at #3 where the team of Lawrence/Hixenbaugh lost to the team of Rhett Waters/Rob Hannah, 6-7. After being tied 6-6, Chariton lost the tiebreaker, 7-2.
"The number three team fought hard in the most exciting doubles match. Michael really improved as the match progressed. Joseph played well," Coach Felderman said.
The other two doubles matches were also competitive. In the #1 match, the team of Jones/Klasem lost to the team of Hein/O'Leary, 6-2. In the #2 match, the team of Fisher/VanDenTop lost to the team of Caleb White/Lawless, 6-2.
