JV girls explode for 15-0 win over Central Decatur

JV girls open the season with a 15-0 shellacking of Central Decatur in three innings in their season opener at Chariton on May 24th.  The girls had 13 runs in the first inning and pitcher, Chloe Richards, tossed a one-hitter.  She struck out five batters and walked four.  Leah Dow was the catcher for the whole game.

Kourtney Nichols scored three runs and had an RBI.  Dow scored two runs.  Rachelle Ruepke scored one run.

8th Girls Sixth at Knoxville Invitational

Sixth place is where the 8th grade girls placed in the Knoxville Middle School Girls Track Invitational this spring.  In the 4x200 relay the team of Lindsay Black, Tuley, Kalie Strife and Jayme Pierschbacher placed fifth in 2:17.86.In the 800-meter medley relay, the team of Currie, Mark, Pierschbacher and Slobodyanik placed fourth in 2:16.77.  Indianola won the meet with 180 points.  Pella was second with 115 and Oskaloosa was third with 88.  Chariton was sixth with 56.

Megan Munoz Receives highest Honors

Megan Munoz of Cedar Rapids received highest honors during the Nurses Pinning Ceremony at Mount Mercy University on May 21st.  She graduated summa cum laude and was chosen by her classmates to speak.  Megan was also awarded the Sister Mary Edward's Award.  The award is presented to the graduating senior in the Department of Nursing who is judged by the faculty to have best demonstrated a high scholastic ability, professional integrity and the spirit of nursing.  During the pinning ceremony Megan extended a special thank you to her grandparents for their encouragement and support.  Grandparents are Dale and Fern Cottrell of Chariton and Glenn and Justine Abrahamson of Russell.  Megan's parents are Janet and Dewey Abrahamson of Centerville.

CMS Girls Win Distance Medley 1,500 at Clarke

The CMS girls ran in a combined track meet at Clarke April 11.  The CMS girls placed third with 97 1/3 points.  Chariton's distance medley team of Madison Cunningham, Jayme Pierschbacher, Emily Seuferer and Isabel Englehardt earned the girls' first blue ribbon of the year with a time of 5:11.1.  This beat the second place time by eight full seconds.  Chariton's 4x800 team of Emma Nelson, Alexis Curran, Laurin Zern and Mackenzie Krutsinger placed third in 12:33.  The sprint medley team of Allison Mark, Pierschbacher, Jenny Roach and Seuferer placed fifth in 2:22.6.

CMS 8th girls at SCC Middle School Meet

The Chariton eighth grade girls turned in a good performance with a fourth place finish at the SCC middle school meet at Eddyville May 6.  Chariton won titles in both the sprint medley and the high jump and placed fourth as a team with 77 points.  The sprint medley team of Brittany Currie, Allison Mark, Jayme Pierschbacher and Veronica Slobodyanik won with a time of 2:12.24.

CMS 7th Girls Place Second at SCC Meet

The best finish of the 2011 season was earned by the Chariton seventh grade girls at the SCC middle school meet in Eddyville Friday, May 6.  Both individual and relay teams received outstanding performances to finish second overall with 130 points.  This was second only to Centerville, who won with 157.  Alexis Curran placed first in a time of 5:21.9. Curran turned in her best 800-meter time of the year finishing second with a time of 2:56.7.

7th Girls Place 6th at Knoxville Relays

Knoxville relays presented stiff competition for the Chariton seventh grade girls on April 28.  
Larger teams such as Indianola and Pella made it tougher for Chariton to score.  Chariton still managed to score 71 points to place sixth overall.  The 4x800 team of Laurin Zern, Emma Nelson, Miriam McDonough and Alexis Curran placed second in 12:18.

Boys Golf Season Ends at Sectionals

The Chariton boys golf team played their sectionals meet at Edmunson Golf Course in Oskaloosa this past Thursday, May 12.  It was the final meet of the season for the Chargers, who placed eighth overall with 364 points.  Cameron Knust shot a 92.  Brendan Laing shot a 93.  Alex Wright shot a 96.

Chargers Season Ends at Districts

A number of individual runners and relay teams recorded their best times of the year at the 3A District meet at Grinnell this past Thursday, May 12.  Chariton placed eighth overall at the meet with 31 points.  Knoxville won the meet with 182 points and Pella was second with 125.  In the 100 meter dash, Stephen McCurdy placed 14th in 13:04.  In the 4x100 relay the team of Beard, Turner Trenary, Alec Reynolds and McCurdy placed eighth in  51.50.  In the discus, Reynolds placed 15th with a throw of 75'6".  In the 4x110 meter shuttle hurdle relay, McCurdy placed eighth in 1:13.34.f

FBLA Members attend State Leadership Conference

Fifteen Chariton High School students attended the 62nd annual Iowa Future Business Leaders of America State leadership Conference on April 17-19, 2011 in Coralville joining approximately 630 students in the largest business career student organization in the world with a quarter million students preparing for carreers in business related fields.  Madison Briggs was one of these students.

2011 High School Graduates

Congratulations to the following seniors, who live here in Russell, for your upcoming graduation from High School on May 21.  Russell School was your beginning and now you are graduating from both Chariton High School and Wayne Community School due to the sad lose of our home town school.

From Wayne Community School, Rebecca Moore, Melissa Dixon (the daughter of Don and Lois Dixon and Richard and Shirley Sibert.)  She will be employed at Mosaic of South Central Iowa and will continue participating in Special Olympics.   Also, former resident, Tim Isabell (son of Rona and Keith Hoover), whose plans are uncertain but for now he will take a year off.

From Chariton High School, Jedidiah Marvin, Malachi Marvin, Cody McCullough, Tyler Knust, Carlee Carroll, Austin Russo and Hollie Tipper.  (At this time, we don't have their future plans available).

CMS 8th Grade Girls Finish Second at Lil Charger Track Meet

May 2, the Chariton eighth grade girls track team competed at the Lil Charger relays at Chariton.    Five second place finishes were awarded to Chariton at this meet.  They were in the discus, high jump, distance medley relay, 1,500-meter run and the sprint medley A relay.  In the 4x200 A relay, the team of Lindsay Black, Tuley, Kayley Strife and Jayme Pierschbacher placed third in 2:08.11.  In the 4x100 A relay, the team of Black, Strife, Pierschbacher and Mark placed fourth in 1:02.

Charger 4x200 team 3rd at SCC Meet

This past Thursday, Albia hosted the South Central Conference track meet.  The Chariton varsity boys team had some of their best times.  In the 400 meter dash, Granahan placed fifth overall in 55:31.  In the 100-meter dash, Wucely Andersen didn't place with a time of 11:9.  Stephen McCurdy finished in a time of 13.2.  The Charger shuttle hurdle relay team of Hall, Bengtson, McCurdy and Greg Beard placed fourth in  1:12.28.  in the discus.   Alec Reynolds didn't place with a throw of 88' ½".  In the shot-put, Reynolds didn't place with a throw of 35'.

Andersen Third in 100 at Clarke Invitational

The Clarke Invitational April 14 furnished the Chariton Boys track team with a lot of top 10 finishes.  Chariton finished eighth in the Class A pool of teams with 18 points.  In the 100-meter dash, Wucely Andersen placed third overall in 12.12.  In the 4x400 relay, the team of Bengtson, Ki Marvin, Hoeger and Paige placed fourth in 4:00.28.

The Chariton boys golf team hosted the Charger Invitational at Lakeview Country Club.  The Charger score was 361.  This was an 18 hole tournament and Cullen Ryan led the Chargers with an 81.  Cameron Knust was second with an 89.  Brendan Laing was third with a 92.  Alex Wright was fourth with a 99.

College News

Lindsey White of Russell, a current second trimester student in the Doctor of Chiropractic program at Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa, has been named to the Dean's list for the first semester.  To be eligible for the Dean's List, a student must achieve a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 in all studies for the respective term.  The highest possible GPA is a 4.00.

Girls Tennis Team Falls to Creston

6-3 was the end score for the Chariton Girls Tennis match against Creston Tuesday night.  The Lady Chargers won the top two singles matches and the #1 varsity doubles match.  The loss against the Panthers kept the Lady Chargers win less for the season.  At #2, the team of Cassie Foster/Raven Terrell beat the team of Mallory Griffith/Borgan Bober, 5-4.

The Girls Varsity Soccer team played Centerville Tuesday night, May 3.  The girls beat Centerville by the 10 goal mercy rule with 5:12 left in the game.  Carlee Carroll goes past a Centerville defender in this picture.

Lady Chargers Third at Rathbun meet

The Chariton girls golf team played at the Preserve at Lake Rathbun on Tuesday, May 3rd.  Chariton placed third out of four teams with a score of 234.  Davis County won the team standings with a score of 202.  Leah Dow shot a 55.

Chariton competes in quad Golf Tournament

Pine Knolls Country Club in Knoxville hosted the quad meet on Friday, April 29.  The teams competing were Chariton, Albia, Knoxville and Pella.  Chariton finished fourth in the team standings with a 198 score.  Cameron Knust shot a 49 for Chariton.  Brendan Laing, Alex Wright each shot a 52 and Cody McCullough shot a 57.  The Chargers played at Davis County May 5 and the Chargers hosted at Lakeview Country Club on May 7.

Geremiah Grimes, Won Softball Throw

Congratulations to Geremiah Grimes, son of Chris and Christine Grimes of Russell, who won first place in the softball throw and second in the 100 meter dash at Graceland University in Lamoni with the Special Olympics program.  He will go to State in the softball throw on May 27, in Ames.

Charger Boys Track Team at Albia

Charger boys track team placed third in 800, 3,200 and 4x100 at the Blue Demon Relays in Albia, April 28.  The Chargers placed fifth out of seven teams with 48 points and the Chargers placed in a number of events.

In the shot put, Alec Reynolds didn't place with a throw of 34'11".  Reynolds had a throw of 75'8" in the discus throw.  In the 4x800 relay, the team of Blake Paige, Tanner Poush, Jon Lazear and Nick Cline placed fourth with a time of 10:14.79.  In the 4x200 JV race, the team of Hoeger, Beard, Reynolds and Stephen McCurdy finished in a time of 1:50.  In the 4x100 JV race, the team of Hoeger, Beard, Reynolds and McCurdy finished in 50.9.  In the shuttle hurdle relay, the team of Hall, Beard, McCurdy and Bengtson placed fourth in 1:13.81.

Knust, Laing Lead Charger Boys at Centerville

The Chariton boys golf team in the 18-hole golf tournament at Centerville on April 26.  Cameron Knust and Brendan Laing each led Chariton placing 22nd overall with an 89.  Chariton finished sixth overall with a score of 373.  Alex Wright shot a 94. Cody McCullough shot a 105.  Albia won the meet with a score of 310.
