The Chariton High School Drill Team's Competion Team, the Silver Team, had a banner showing at the Iowa State Drill Team Association State Championship at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines December 5 and 6.
The Silver Team competed in and won trophies in two categories including Hip Hop and Pom. They won first place out of 12 teams in Class VI of the Hip Hop category and they placed third out of 12 teams in Class IX of the Pom category. Chariton's team also received the "Award of Excellence" for their combined grade point average.
The Silver Team has 11 members including seniors Emily Grismore (captain), Cassie Carpenter and Taylor Pennington. The team has one junior, Katey Herr and three sophomores including Alexis Curran, Mercedes Michael and Emma Nelson. There are four freshman on the team including Mackenzie Curran, Kelsey Hockenson, Maddie Kaska and Courtney Quillin.
The coach of the CHS Drill Team is Bobbie Jo Vastine.
There were over 5,000 participants representing 278 high school dance teams and color guards. Routines were performed and judged in several categories including Pom, jazz, novelty, lights, military, hip hop, lyrical, hoopla, prop, kick, slow production, color guard, all male and coed.
An expert panel of judges from across the United States judged the teams. The judge's scores were based on appearance, choreography, execution, technique and general effect/showmanship. Teams were also recognized for academics, community service and sportsmanship.
