Varsity girls lose heartbreaker to Albia, 47-45, on White Out Night
The Chariton varsity girls lost at home to Albia in a conference game at the Charger Dome on December 13th. With the game tied at 45 with under 10 seconds left, Albia senior Brooke Bettis scored on a lay up to give the Lady Dees a 47-45 win.
Chariton received another strong game from Allyson Showers, who had her fourth double-double of the year with 17 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Maria Blong also hit double figures with 10 points and six rebounds. Emily Grismore had nine points and six rebounds. Alexis Curran had seven points and six assists. She had a good assist to turnover ratio with six assists and just two turnovers. Emma Fuhs had two points.
Chariton once again had a bad second quarter where they were outscore 11-2. Albia led 6-2 early but a foul shot by Showers and a Blong basket cut the lead to 6-5. A basket by Curran gave Chariton a 7-6 lead with 3:45 left in the first period. Albia scored four straight points to take a 10-7 lead.
However Grismore scored two straight baskets to put Chariton ahead 11-10. After an Albia basket, Grismore scored again to put chariton ahead 13-12. The Lady Dees scored again and led 14-13 after one period.
Chariton trailed 25-15 at halftime. However, Chariton bounced back with their strongest quarter of the night in the third, outscoring Albia 17-11 to cut the lead to six heading into the final period. Chariton rallied to tie and take the lead in the fourth period.
With Chariton trailing 45-44, with under a minute left, Showers was fouled and hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 45 apiece. The score remained the same and with time winding down, Bettis hit the game winning shot to give Albia the win.
For the game, Chariton shot 19-61 from the field and 7-13 from the line. Albia shot 19-55 from the field and 5-9 from the line. Albia out-rebounded Chariton 39-30. Chariton took good care of the ball with just nine turnovers. Albia had 12 turnovers.
Chariton had nine assists, six steals and four blocks. Albia had 12 assists, two steals and two blocks. Chariton had 13 fouls and Albia had 11.
Terrell, Folkerts left JV Girls to Rout Over Albia
Two strong halves of basketball lifted the Chariton JV girls to a 44-14 win over Albia at Chariton December 13th. Chariton stormed to a 23-6 halftime lead and outscored the Lady Dees 21-8 in the second half to win by 30.
Saydee Terrell had 11 points, two rebounds, four steals and one assist. Micaela Folkerts had 10 points, six rebounds and one assist. 8th Red Girls
The Chariton eighth grade girls Red team moved to 3-0 with a 34-17 win over Albia at Chariton December 9th.
Luci Swarthout had 12 points, one rebound and three steals. Ivy Swarthout had six points, one rebound, two steals and two assists. Abbie Peterson had two points, four rebounds and two steals. Aubrie Richards had four points, seven rebounds, three steals and three blocks. Autumn Gwinn had four points and four rebounds. Tressa Shore had two points and two rebounds. Ashley Pfrimmer had four points, one rebound and one steal. Taytum Bacus had one rebound and Megan Schultz had two rebounds.
8th White Girls
The Chariton White team lost 21-8. Trinity Kemper had four points. Bacus had two points, one steal and one block. Taheton Decker had two points. Natalie Baird had two rebounds and one steal. Schultz had one rebound. Pfrimmer, Jacklynn Johnson and Taylor Ingram each had a steal. Kelsie Chester had a block. Shelby Jensen had a rebound and a steal.
7th Red Win over Albia, 28-16
The Chariton seventh grade girls Red team shot better and had good offensive balance in a 28-16 win over Albia at Chariton December, 9th. With the win, the Red team moved to 2-1
Six different girls scored and Chariton scorched the nets going 2-1 overall.
Six different girls scored and Chariton scorched the nets going 14-24, 58 percent. Shayla Holohan was perfect from the field and led the Red team with 10 points, six rebounds, two steals and one assist. Natalie Ilyenko also shot perfectly and had six points and five rebounds. Paige Burgett also had six points, one rebound and three steals.
Coming off an injury, Breanna Ellis scored two points. Shelby Dobberthein finished with two points and a block. Macy Johnston had two points. Grace Bengtson ran the offense efficiently and had only two turnovers. She also was tough defensively with six steals and kept Albia from doing what they wanted to for much of the game. Alysha Shutt had one steal.
"Tonight the Red team played more with the flow of the game and let things happen and reacted well. It was nice to get our first win at hone," Chariton Head Coach Bruce Taylor said.
White Team Remains Unbeaten
The White team also beat Albia to move to 3-0 on the season. Chariton led 4-2 at halftime and outscored Albia 8-2 in the second half. Shutt led the White team in scoring with eight points to go along with two rebounds and three steals. Johnston had two points and three rebounds. Macey Beatty had two points and one steal. Mickenzy Beatty ran the point for half the game and had two steals and no turnovers.
Leilani Plank ran the point for the rest of the game and had one rebound, one steal and two turnovers. Natalie Ilyenko had one rebound, three steals and one assist. Crystal Milam had one rebound. Erin Payton had three steals and Baylee Pollard had one steal. Emily Shelton had one rebound.
"The girls continue to show a little improvement in each game and that's encouraging," Coach Taylor said.
