Still Unbeaten!  8th Girls Red team moves to 6-0 with win over Eddyville

The Chariton eighth grade girls Red team moved to 6-0 with a 36-31 win over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont at Chariton December 19.  The game was tied 10-10 at halftime but Chariton outscored the Rockets, 26-21, in the second half to remain unbeaten.  Luci Swarthout had 12 points, four rebounds, five steals and one assist.  Ivy Swarthout had 11 points, one rebound, six steals and three assists.
"The girls played their best tonight and kept up the aggressive play the whole game.  I really felt Tressa Shore stepped up and gave us some much needed minutes due to fatigue and foul trouble," Chariton Head Choach Jeanna Snook said.
Aubrie Richards had five points, six rebounds, three steals and three blocks.  Shore had four points and five rebounds.  Autumn Gwinn had two points and one rebound.  Taytum Bacus had two points.  Abbie Peterson had three rebounds and four assists.
The Chariton White Team Also Won 19-8
Ashley Pfrimmer had six points and six rebounds.  Jacklynn Johnson had five points, one rebound, one steal and one assist.  Taylor Ingram had two points and four rebounds.  Megan Schultz had two points, three rebounds and one block.  Natalie Baird had two points, three rebounds and three steals.  Shelby Jensen had two points.
Taheton Decker had three rebounds, three steals and one assist.  Kelsie Chester and Danica Derringer each had one rebound and one steal.  Trinity Kemper had one assist.
"All the girls played well.  I have seen some great improvement.  I was really happy to see Taheton and Natalie getting more aggressive and doing a better job rebounding.  Ashey also had an outstanding game," Coach Snook said.

Night Visions Campaign off and running

Coon's Foundation kick starts campaign with generous gift

The Night Visions campaign is officially off the ground and running as the Charger Baseball Program recently received their first gift towards the campaign.  The Coon's Foundation generously stepped up to the plate and made a gift of $25,000 to get things rolling.

The purpose of the Night Visions campaign is to raise enough funds to install lights at Milledge Field - longtime home of the Chargers.

Currently, Chariton is one of only two known school districts without lights on their high school baseball field. The monetary goal for the campaign is $180,000, which is the original bid from Musco Lighting, the premier sports lighting company in the world.

There are a few options that the program is looking into that may reduce these costs and Musco also mentioned that if the lights were installed by the 2014 season they would most likely be able to drop the bid closer to the $150,000 range.

The Campaign has recently received approval to designate giving "levels" for recognition of donors to the campaign.  These "giving levels" have been approved per Chariton Athletic Director Tim Milledge with the first level for recognition starting at $100.  Look for more information on these levels coming soon.  For more information on the campaign or donation options feel free to contact Mr. Milledge or Coach Schroeder anytime.

Second Half Turnovers Hurt CHS Varsity Boys in Loss to Indianola

The Chariton varsity boys took on the Class 4A Indianola Indians in a non-conference game at Chariton on December 17th.  Indianola led by 11 at halftime and with their defensive pressure they increased their lead in the second half en route to an 82-65 win.  Daric Laing went 10-10 from the line and finished with a team-high 25 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.  With the loss Chariton is now 3-3 overall.

T.J. Hockenson had 21 points, a team-high eight rebounds, one assist and one block.  Willie Felderman went 4-5 from the field and 3-4 from the line to finish with 11 points, three rebounds and two assists.  Christian Bengtson had five points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.  Brett Braida had three assists.  Alec Reynolds had one rebound and one assist.

The game was close early as Chariton trailed just 19-15 after one period.  The Indians outscored the Chargers 18-11 in the second period to take a 37-26 lead into halftime.  Indianola outscored the Chargers 27-16 in the third to lead 64-42 heading into the final period.  Chariton had their best offensive output in the fourth with 23 points and outscored the Indians 23-18 but it wasn't quite enough.

Chariton finished the game with 16 turnovers and 16 fouls.  The Chargers also had 15 assists, six steals and one block.  For the game Chariton shot 18-38, 47 percent from inside the arc and 1-9, 38 percent from three point range.  Chariton shot 20-27, 74 percent, from the charity stripe.  They pulled down 24 rebounds including 11 offensive boards.

JV Boys Struggle in loss at Indianola

The Chariton JV boys basketball team struggled in a 47-18 loss at Indianola December  17th.  Chariton had a season high 29 turnovers and couldn't get on track offensively all night.
"We couldn't score tonight and we couldn't stop the other team.  The Indians played a lot of zone so we shouldn't have had 29 turnovers.  We usually get defensive stops and that can get our offense going.  Tonight we struggled getting stops and our offense struggled the whole night.  We are looking forward to playing our next game and putting this one behind us," Chariton JV Head Coach Jay Pierschbacher said.
Chariton didn't score more than five points in any quarter.  Indianola led 9-4 after one period.  The Indians outscored the Chargers 17-5 in the second to lead 26-9 at halftime.  Chariton kept battling but couldn't really cut into Indianola's lead.  The Indians led 35-14 heading into the final period and outscored the JV Chargers 12-4 in the fourth.
Bradley Krutsinger led Chariton with seven points along with six rebounds, two assists and one steal.  Quinn Storm had five points three rebounds and two blocks.  Spencer Sherrick had four points, three rebounds, two steals and one block.  Aaron Cain had two points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal.  Eduard Rodygin had two blocks.  Chase Altenhofen had three rebounds, one assist and one steal.  Sawyer Dow had one steal.  Carter Riechmann had a rebound and a block.  Adam Kaska had a rebound and an assist.  Ethan Curnutte had a rebound and an assist.  Sam Lerner had a rebound.
For the game, Chariton shot 6-18, 33 percent, from inside the arc and 0-10 from three-point range.  The Chargers shot 6-14, 43 percent, from the line.  Chariton committed 14 fouls.  The Chargers pulled down 23 rebounds including 10 offensive boards.  Chariton had six assists, six steals and six blocks.

Lady Chargers fall to Indianola 69-44

The Chariton varsity girls took on a very good Class 5A team, Indianola at Indianola December 17th.  After a good early start where they trailed by just six, Chariton wasn't able to keep up with the Lady Indians in a 69-44 loss.  Indianola shot a blistering 8-20, 40 percent, from three-point range and they were just too tough to stop defensively.  With the loss, Chariton is now 2-4 on the season.

"They were just way too good.  We played hard, they were just a better team.  They were very young and talented.  I thought that Emily Grismore played a really solid game for us with 14 points and just two turnovers," Chariton Head Coach Lee Sandy said.

Indainola entered the game with a 4-2 record with their two losses being to two ranked 5A teams, Waukee and Ankeny Centennial.  Coach Sandy said that their top three scorers were sophomores and their fourth leading scorer is a freshman.

Early on Chariton kept it close and trailed just 12-6.  Indianola scored the final six points of the first quarter to take an 18-6 lead.  The Lady Indians outscored Chariton 22-7 in the second period to take a 40-13 lead into halftime.  With the game in hand, the Indians outscored Chariton 15-12 in the third and Chariton outscored them 19-14 in the fourth.

For the game, Chariton shot 20-44 from the field and 4-9 from the line.  Indianola shot 29-59 from the field and 3-11 from the line.  Indianola out-rebounded Chariton 25-21. Chariton had 28 turnovers and 11 fouls and Indianola committed 12 turnovers and 14 fouls.  Chariton had five assists, seven steals and three blocks.  Indianola had 18 assists, 20 steals and no blocks.

Allyson Showers missed a double-double for the first time this season, but still had a good game with 12 points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals.  Emma Fuhs had six points and Alexis Curran had four.  Delaney Richards had three points.  Sarah Fuhs and Micaela Folkerts had two points apiece.  Maria Blong had one point.

Chariton 8th Red Girls' Team Moves to 5-0 with 13-Point Win at Clarke

Red Team

Different opponent, same result.  The Chariton eighth grade Red girls team remained undefeated with a 33-20 win at Clarke December 16th.  Chariton started off slowly and led 13-10 at halftime.

However, they pulled away in the second half, outscoring Clarke 20-10 to get the win.  With the victory, the Red team moved to 5-0 on the season.

Ivy Swarthout had 11 points, two rebounds, three steals and two assists.  Aubrie Richards had nine points, six rebounds, four blocks and one steal.  Abbie Peterson had five points, five rebounds and four assists.  Taytum Bacus had four points, one rebound and three steals.  Tressa Shore had two points and one rebound.  Megan Schultz had two points.  Autumn Gwinn had two rebounds and one steal.  Luci Swarthout had one rebound and three steals.  Ashley Pfrimmer had two steals.

White Team

The Chariton white team also won 16-8.  Jacklynn Johnson led the team with eight points and two steals.  Taylor Ingram had four points and one steal.  Taheton Decker had two points and one rebound.  Shelby Jensen had two points.  Bacus, Natalie Baird, Pfrimmer and Danica Derringer each had a steal.

7th Girls Red Team Falls at Clarke

White Team Moves to 4-1 with Win

The Chariton seventh grade girls Red team suffered a 24-20 loss at Clarke December 16th.  The game was a makeup game from November.  With the loss, Chariton moved to 2-4 overall.
It was a pretty evenly matched game where Chariton led by two in the fourth quarter.  The Red team had a chance to go up by four after trailing most of the game but couldn't get shots to fall down the stretch.
"Again, we were outshot at the free throw line by Clarke, 20 attempts to two.  We lost Breanna Ellis in the second half to an injury.  We could have used her experience in the fourth quarter.  The girls played hard and if we adjust defensively, we could be equal when Clarke comes to Chariton," Chariton Head Coach Bruce Taylor said.
Grace Bengston had eight points and two steals.  Ellis had four points.  Natalie Ilyenko played a nice game with four points and one steal.  Shelby Dobberthein had two points and one steal.  Erin Payton went 1-2 from the field with two points.  Paige Burgett had one assist.  Alysha Shutt and Shayla Holohan both contributed during their time on the floor.  No rebound stats were available for this game
White team moves to 4-1 with win
The white team moved to 4-1 with a 10-6 win.  Chariton shot 5-23, 22 percent, from the field and 0-2 from the line.  Ilyenko had four points, two steals and one assist.  Shutt had four points.  Macey Beaty had two points and one rebound.
Mikenzy Beaty and Leilani Plank ran the offense and took care of the ball committing only two turnovers.  Plank also had two steals and two assists.
Macy Johnston had three rebounds and one steal.  Emily Shelton had two rebounds and one steal.  Crystal Milan had one rebound and one steal.  Baylee Pollard had one steal.
"I see improvement, but getting in the right spot and executing the  offense is still a work in progress.  Movement and spacing are keys when we run a play.  And that just takes game time," Coach Taylor said.

8th Grade Boys Win Against Clarke

A Team

The Chariton eighth grade boys A team got their first win of the season with a 34-31 win over Clarke at Chariton December 16th.  Dylan Stites led Chariton with 15 points, three assists and two rebounds.  With the win Chariton is now 1-3 overall.

Isaiah Tuigong had nine points, six rebounds and one assist.  Tanner Stephens had six points, one rebound and two steals.  Tyler Anderson had two points, two rebounds and four assists.  Kurt Showers had two points and a team-high nine rebounds.

B Team

Chariton also won the B game, 12-9, Riley Voss had four points, three rebounds and one assist.  Bradley Owens had two points, three rebounds and one steal.  Mark Ilyendo had two points, three rebounds and one assist.  Kareem Jasper had two points and one rebound.  Will Exline had two points and one steal.

Boys Varsity wins over Knoxville

Strong Defensive Effort Lifts Varsity Boys to Big Win Over Knoxville

A strong defensive effort in the first half along with hot shooting lifted the Chariton varsity boys to an 81-63 win over Knoxville at Chariton December 16th.  The Chargers held the Panthers to just four points after one period and led 36-17 at halftime.  Daric Laing went 7-8 at the line and finished with a team-high 27 points, three rebounds, one steal and three assists.

Chariton stormed out to a 23-4 lead after the first period.  Each team scored 13 in the second period and the Chargers led 36-17 at halftime.  Knoxville couldn't cut into Chariton's lead as each team scored 20 points in the third and the Panthers outscored Chariton by one in the fourth.

For the game, Chariton shot 27-50, 54 percent, from inside the arc and 3-8, 38 percent, from three-point range.  Chariton shot 18-29, 62 percent, from the line.  Chariton committed 15 fouls and 11 turnovers.  Chariton had 23 assists, four steals and zero blocks.

Willie Felderman had 18 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and one steal.  T.J. Hockenson had 13 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and one steal.  Christian Bengtson had 10 points, six rebounds and five assists.  Joey Krutsinger had six points, four rebounds and one assist.  Ben Morrett had five points, two rebounds and five assists.  Brett Braida had two points, one steal and two assists.  Alec Reynolds had two rebounds and one assist.

Varsity Girls Fall at Home to Knoxville

A subpar defensive effort in the first half hurt the Chariton varsity girls in a 58-41 loss to Knoxville at Chariton Monday night.  Chariton gave up 25 points in the first period and  37 in the first half and couldn't recover.  With the loss Chariton moved to 2-3 overall.

Knoxville jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game and extended their lead to start the game and extended their lead to 14-4.  The Panthers led 25-6 after one period.  Chariton picked it up a little offensively in the second period, outscoring Knoxville 14-12 but they still trailed 37-20 at halftime.  Chariton struggled again in the third period scoring just four points and trailed 54-24 heading into the final period.  With both teams playing a lot of reserves, the Lady Chargers outscored the Panthers  17-4 in the fourth but it wasn't quite enough.

For the game, Chariton shot 16-52 from the field and 8-20 from the line.  Knoxville shot 22-50 from the field and 14-21 from the line.  Knoxville out-rebounded Chariton 30-28.  Chariton had 21 turnovers to 16 for Knoxville and they committed 20 fouls while Knoxville committed 24.  Chariton had a lot of steals with 17.  They also had 10 assists and two blocks.  Knoxville had seven steals, three assists and one block.

Allyson Showers had her fifth double-double of the season with a team high 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Alexis Curran had 10 points.  Maria Blong had five points and one block.  Emma Fuhs had four points and one block.  Micaela Folkerts had four points and five rebounds.  Emily Grismore had three points and six steals.  Sarah Fuhs had two points and three assists.  Emily Seuferer had two points.

8th Boys Fall to Davis County At Home

A Team

A strong second half comeback came up just short for the Chariton eighth grade boys in a 44-28 loss to Davis County at Chariton December 13.  Dylan Stites led Chariton with 11 points.  Tyler Anderson had nine points, five rebounds and one assist.

"Davis County had a really good big man, both offensively and defensively, and that was tough for us.  We made a nice comeback in the second half and pulled to within eight points before they pulled away at the end.  All I can ask is that we keep working hard and continue to improve." Chariton Head Coach Brian Zimmerlie said.

B Team

Davis County won the B game, 25-12.  Owens had five points and one rebound.  Voss had four points, one rebound and one assist.  Tanner Stephens had two points and one rebound.  Will Exline had three steals.  Showers had one rebound,.

The CMS eighth grade boys' next game is at home against Knoxville on January 7th.

Charger Boys Fall to Albia

A slow start defensively was too much to overcome for the Chariton varsity boys in a 73-64 loss at home to Albia in overtime on December 13th.  The Chargers trailed by as many as 17 in the first half but rallied in the second half to tie the game and send it into overtime.  Chariton was outscored 12-3 in the overtime and came up short.  Center T.J. Hockenson had a double-double with 24 points, 13 rebounds, one block and one steal.

Daric Laing had 19 points, three rebounds, five assists, two steals and one block.  Willie Felderman had a double-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, one steal and three blocks.  Christian Bengtson had six points, three rebounds and a team-high six assists.  Brett Braida had one point, five rebounds, one steal and one assist.  Ben Morrett had three rebounds and three assists.

Chariton jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on a couple of Hockenson baskets.  After a three by Albia, Daric Laing hit a three to give Chariton a 7-3 lead.  Later in the period a Hockenson basket put Chariton up 11-8.  A three by Albia point guard Matt Baker tied the game at 11 apiece.  Both teams traded baskets and an Albia basket tied the score at 15 with 3:06 left in the first period.  Albia ended the period on a 6-0 run to take a 21-15 lead.

Albia scored the first seven points of the second period to extend the lead to 28-15.  A three by Baker put Albia up 31-17 with 4:27 left in the half.  A three by Mason Cox put Albia up 34-17.  Chariton went on a 10-5 run, starting with a basket by Willie Felderman, to end the half.  Albia led 39-27 at halftime.

Chariton held Albia to just 22 points in the final two quarters of regulation.  They outscored the Blue Demons 15-8 in the third period to cut the lead to 47-42 heading into the fourth period.  The Chargers poured in 19 points in the fourth and outscored Albia 19-14 to make the score 61-61 at the end of regulation.  Albia scored 12 points in overtime however and held the Chargers to just three to get the win.

For the game, Chariton shot 23-46, 50 percent, from inside the arc and 2-20, 10 percent, from three point range.  Chariton shot 12-14, 86 percent, from the line.  The Chargers pulled down 37 rebounds including 11 offensive boards.  Chariton committed 15 fouls and 11 turnovers.  The Chargers had 18 assists, five steals and five blocks.

8th Boys A Team Lose to Albia
The Chariton eighth grade boys faced a very good Albia team at Albia, Dec. 9th.  The Chargers gave a valiant effort including a strong defensive effort in the second half but lost 56-21.
Dylan Stites led Chariton with nine points, three rebounds and one assist.  Tyler Anderson had eight points, two rebounds and one assist.  Bradley Owens had two points and two rebounds.  Kurt Showers had two rebounds and one steal.  Tanner Stephens had two points.
8th Boys B Team Lose to Albia
Chariton lost the B game, 24-12.  Showers had four points and three rebounds.  Owens had two points and four rebounds.  Will Exline had two points and one rebound.  Riley Voss and Mark Ilyenko had two points apiece.

JV Boys Outlast Albia in Nail-biting Thriller

A strong second and third quarter by the Chariton JV Boys helped them win a nail-bitter against Albia, 36-35, at Chariton December 13th.

Trailing by one with time winding down, Albia took a five-foot shot but was unable to hit it.  Quintin Storm grabbed the rebound and the Chargers came away victorious.  Storm had a double-double for Chariton with a team-high 14 points, 10 rebounds, one block one steal and one assist.

Albia led 10-8 after one period.  The Chargers outscored the Blue Demons, 11-6, in the second to lead 19-16 at halftime.  Chariton outscored Albia 11-4 in the third to lead 30-20 heading into the final period.  Albia rallied with 15 points in the fourth and outscored the Chargers 15-6 but were not able to hit the game-winning shot.

For the game, Chariton shot 16-41, 39 percent, from inside the arc and 1-2, 50 percent, from three point range.  The Chargers struggled at the line going 2-10, 20 percent.  Chariton pulled down 27 rebounds including 12 offensive boards.  The Chargers committed 14 turnovers and 10 fouls.  Chariton had 12 assists, 12 steals and three blocks.

Varsity girls lose heartbreaker to Albia, 47-45, on White Out Night

The Chariton varsity girls lost at home to Albia in a conference game at the Charger Dome on December 13th.  With the game tied at 45 with under 10 seconds left, Albia senior Brooke Bettis scored on a lay up to give the Lady Dees a 47-45 win.

Chariton received another strong game from Allyson Showers, who had her fourth double-double of the year with 17 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and three steals.  Maria Blong also hit double figures with 10 points and six rebounds.  Emily Grismore had nine points and six rebounds.  Alexis Curran had seven points and six assists.  She had a good assist to turnover ratio with six assists and just two turnovers.  Emma Fuhs had two points.

Chariton once again had a bad second quarter where they were outscore 11-2.  Albia led 6-2 early but a foul shot by Showers and a Blong basket cut the lead to 6-5.  A basket by Curran gave Chariton a 7-6 lead with 3:45 left in the first period.  Albia scored four straight points to take a 10-7 lead.

However Grismore scored two straight baskets to put Chariton ahead 11-10.  After an Albia basket, Grismore scored again to put chariton ahead 13-12.  The Lady Dees scored again and led 14-13 after one period.

Chariton trailed 25-15 at halftime.  However, Chariton bounced back with their strongest quarter of the night in the third, outscoring Albia 17-11 to cut the lead to six heading into the final period.  Chariton rallied to tie and take the lead in the fourth period.

With Chariton trailing 45-44, with under a minute left, Showers was fouled and hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 45 apiece.  The score remained the same and with time winding down, Bettis hit the game winning shot to give Albia the win.

For the game, Chariton shot 19-61 from the field and 7-13 from the line.  Albia shot 19-55 from the field and 5-9 from the line.  Albia out-rebounded Chariton 39-30.  Chariton took good care of the ball with just nine turnovers.  Albia had 12 turnovers.

Chariton had nine assists, six steals and four blocks.  Albia had 12 assists, two steals and two blocks.  Chariton had 13 fouls and Albia had 11.

Terrell, Folkerts left JV Girls to Rout Over Albia

Two strong halves of basketball lifted the Chariton JV girls to a 44-14 win over Albia at Chariton December 13th.  Chariton stormed to a 23-6 halftime lead and outscored the Lady Dees 21-8 in the second half to win by 30.

The Chariton White team lost 21-8.  Trinity Kemper had four points.  Bacus had two points, one steal and one block.  Taheton Decker had two points.  Natalie Baird had two rebounds and one steal.  Schultz had one rebound.  Pfrimmer, Jacklynn Johnson and Taylor Ingram each had a steal.  Kelsie Chester had a block.  Shelby Jensen had a rebound and a steal.

7th Red Win over Albia, 28-16

The Chariton seventh grade girls Red team shot better and had good offensive balance in a 28-16 win over Albia at Chariton December, 9th.  With the win, the Red team moved to 2-1

Six different girls scored and Chariton scorched the nets going 2-1 overall.

Six different girls scored and Chariton scorched the nets going 14-24, 58 percent.  Shayla Holohan was perfect from the field and led the Red team with 10 points, six rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Natalie Ilyenko also shot perfectly and had six points and five rebounds.  Paige Burgett also had six points, one rebound and three steals.

Coming off an injury, Breanna Ellis scored two points.  Shelby Dobberthein finished with two points and a block.  Macy Johnston had two points.  Grace Bengtson ran the offense efficiently and had only two turnovers.  She also was tough defensively with six steals and kept Albia from doing what they wanted to for much of the game.  Alysha Shutt had one steal.

"Tonight the Red team played more with the flow of the game and let things happen and reacted well.  It was nice to get our first win at hone,"  Chariton Head Coach Bruce Taylor said.

White Team Remains Unbeaten

The White team also beat Albia to move to 3-0 on the season.  Chariton led 4-2 at halftime and outscored Albia 8-2 in the second half.  Shutt led the White team in scoring with eight points to go along with two rebounds and three steals.  Johnston had two points and three rebounds.  Macey Beatty had two points and one steal.  Mickenzy Beatty ran the point for half the game and had two steals and no turnovers.

Leilani Plank ran the point for the rest of the game and had one rebound, one steal and two turnovers.  Natalie Ilyenko had one rebound, three steals and one assist.  Crystal Milam had one rebound.  Erin Payton had three steals and Baylee Pollard had one steal.  Emily Shelton had one rebound.

"The girls continue to show a little improvement in each game and that's encouraging," Coach Taylor said.

8th Red Girls Move to 4-0 with Win Over Davis County

Red Team

The Chariton eighth grade girls red team moved to 4-0 with a 42-35 win at Davis County December 12th.  Chariton led 24-14 at the half and kept up their strong play in the second half to get the win.  Ivy Swarthout had 14 points, one rebound, five steals and three assists.  Luci Swarthout had eight points and one rebound.  Aubrie Richards had seven points, seven rebounds, one steal, one assist and one block.  Autumn Gwinn had five points and four rebounds.  Taytum Bacus had four points, three rebounds and one steal.  Tressa Shore had three points and three rebounds.  Abbie Peterson had one point, three rebounds, one steal and two assists.  Ashley Primmer and Megan Schultz each had a rebound.

B Game

Chariton also won the B game, 18-15.  Jacklynn Johnson had five points, one rebound and four steals.  Schultz had four points and three rebounds.  Pfrimmer had four points, one rebound and two steals.  Shore had three points, three rebounds and one assist.  Bacus had two points and one steal.  Kelsie Chester had four rebounds.  Taheton Decker and Natalie Baird had two apiece.  Shelby Jensen and Trinity Kemper each had one.

7th Red and White Girls BB Teams Fall to Davis County on the Road

A disparity in free throw attempts was one key stat in the Chariton seventh grade Red team girls' 30-22 loss at Davis County December 12th.  The Mustangs had 18 attempts at the line compared to two for Chariton.  The Red team shot 11-45, 24 percent, from the field and 0-2 from the line.
Grace Bengtson went 5-11 from the field and finished with  10 points, one rebound, four steals and one assist.  With the loss, the Red team moved to 2-2 overall.
Paige Burgett had four points and six steals.  Shelby Dobberthein had two points.  Brenna Ellis had two points, one rebound and two steals.  Shayla Hobson had two points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist.  Macy Johnston came in and gave the Red team some nice minutes off the bench, scoring two points and pulling down three rebounds.  Other players seeing action were Erin Payton, Natalie Ilyenko and Alysha Shutt.
White Team Loses to DC
The White team suffered its first loss with an 11-6 defeat to the Mustangs.  Chariton was hampered by cold shooting as they shot just 2-16, 12.5 percent, on the night.  With the loss, the White team moved to 3-1 overall.
Shutt had three points and Ilyenko had two.  Johnston had one point, two rebounds, and two steals.  Macey Beaty had one rebound.  Mikenzy Beaty had one rebound and one steal.  Crystal Milan and Payton each had one steal.  Leilani Plank and Baylee Pollard each had one rebound.  Emily Shelton was the White team's main inbound person and had just one turnover in the game.
"A bright spot was our girls going 2-4 from the free throw line.  If we can shoot a percentage in the 20s from the field when they come to Chariton, I will like our chances for a victory," Coach Taylor said.

7th A Boys Beat DC

The Chariton seventh grade boys A team bounced back from a loss at Albia with a 31-25 win over Davis County at Chariton December 12th.  Nathan Blong had his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds.  Jackson Fisher had eight points and seven rebounds.
"Our kids bounced back from a tough loss with a good effort today.  We have been trying to pick up our intensity at practice and have that carry over to the game.  We need to continue to improve our defensive rebounding, especially our post players as this is the second team in a row that has gotten double digit offensive rebounds against us.  We struggled with a horrific shooting night, going 13-48 from the field, but our defensive effort helped us to pull out the win," Chariton Head Coach Mike Jones said.
Royce Stuart had five points and five rebounds.  Brodey Johnson had four points and one rebound.  Brady Hamilton had two points.  Nathan Weaver, Noah Weaver and Colbie Wertz each had one rebound.
B Team keeps improving
The B team played hard but fell to Davis County, 25-16.  Jimmy Graham had six points and one rebound.  Ty White had four points and one rebound.
Aaron Sullenger had two points and one rebound.  Cooper Shelton and Gus Ghormley had two points apiece.  Chance Anderson and Micah Thatcher had three rebounds apiece.  Ben Lahart, Tyler Gookin and Garrett Roach had one rebound each.
"The B team kids are improving.  We have struggled to get into our offense, but we seemed to handle Davis County's pressure a little better tonight.  We still are looking for someone to step up from a leadership perspective on the B team and get us in proper positions.  Like the A team, these kids played a lot harder tonight.  We will continue to get better with this kind of effort," Coach Jones said.

8th Red Girls Move to 3-0 with Win over Albia

The Chariton eighth grade girls Red team moved to 3-0 with a 34-17 win over Albia at Chariton December 9th.

Luci Swarthout had 12 points, one rebound and three steals. Ivy Swarthout had six points, one rebound, two steals and two assists. Abbie Peterson had two points, four rebounds and two steals. "Our defense shut them down. They only scored four points in the first half. Luci did a great job moving her feet and then the rest of the team played good help defense," Chariton Head Coach Jeanna Snook said.

8th Boys Fall to Albia

The Chariton eighth grade boys faced a very good Albia team December 9th.  The Chargers gave a valiant effort including a strong defensive effort in the second half but lost 56-21.

"We ran into a buzz-saw with Albia.  They have a good program and showed it in the first half.  We regrouped at halftime and were only outscored 16-14 in the second half.  We picked up our defensive intensity and it helped our offense as well," Chariton Head Coach Brian Zimmerli said.

Dylan Sites led Chariton with nine points, three rebounds and one assist.  Tyler Anderson had eight points, two rebounds and one assist.  Bradley Owens had two points and two rebounds.  Kurt Showers had two rebounds and one steal.  Tanner Stephens had two points.

Chariton B Team Falls

Chariton lost the B game, 24-12.  Showers had four points and three rebounds.  Owens had two points and four rebounds.  Will Exline had two points and one rebound.  Riley Voss and Mark Ilyenko had two points apiece.

7th Boys Fall to Albia

The Chariton A team struggled in a 53-18 loss at Albia December 9th.  The Chargers didn't shoot well going 7-30 from the field and no player had more than six points.  Noah Weaver led the team with six points along with 10 rebounds.  With the loss, the A team moved to 1-1 on the season.
"This was a rough outing for us today.  We shot the ball poorly, we were out-rebounded and we didn't take care of the ball very well.  The fundamental part we can work on, but I don't like that we were out-hustled by Albia at both ends of the court.  We will have that fixed before the next game," Chariton Head Coach Mike Jones said.

The B team also lost to Albia, 23-10.  The B team played Albia tough in the first half forcing an 8-8 tie at halftime.  "In the second half however, we again struggled to find our offense.  Without running our sets and facing Albia's defense, we began to turn the ball over too much and Albia took advantage of this to pull away in the game," Coach Jones said.
Tyler Gookin, Aaron Sullenger, Jimmy Graham, Matthew Stout and Gus Ghormley had two points each.  Graham had five rebounds.  Sullenger, Ghormley and Ty White had two rebounds each.  Garrett Roach and Luke Lahart each had one rebound.

Varsity and JV Girls Beat Clarke

What an awesome win!  The Chariton varsity girls picked up their first win against Clarke in four years with a thrilling 42-40 win over Clarke in overtime at Chariton December 9th.  

A clutch three-point shot by Alexis Curran at the end of regulation tied the game up to send it to overtime and both Allyson Showers and Emma Fuhs hit clutch free throws at the line in OT to help give Chariton the victory.

What makes the victory even sweeter is that Clarke is the three-time defending conference champion.  With the win Chariton moved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.  

Early on Chariton fell behind 11-2 and 13-4.  However their tough D and work on the boards helped them claw back into it.  Clarke led 13-6 after one period.  Chariton held the Lady Indians to just 10 total points in the second and third periods.  Chariton trailed 17-13 at halftime and 23-22 heading into the final period.

Chariton missed a three point shot with five seconds left in regulation and trailing by one.  The Lady Chargers fouled Clarke and they made both free throws to take a three-point lead.  Clarke didn't extend their defense after the free throws and just let Curran dribble down the court.  She shot the three as time expired and it hit nothing but net to tie the game at 33 apiece heading into overtime.

In overtime, Showers went 5-6 at the line down the stretch and Emma Fuhs also made a couple to give Chariton the win.

Showers had a double-double with a team high 17 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.  Grismore had 12 points and Curran had seven points and four assists.  Fuhs had four points, 10 rebounds, Four assists and two blocks.  Maria Blong had two points.

Richards, Schaeffer Lead CHS JV Girls over Clarke

The Chariton JV girls beat Clarke, 33-23, at Chariton Dec. 9.  Chariton led 15-10 at halftime and outscored the Indians 18-13 in the second half.

Delaney Richards led the team with 10 points to go along with five rebounds, three steals and two assists.  Carlie Schaeffer had eight points, seven steals and three assists.  Micaela Folkerts had four points, five rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Carley Arnold had three points, five rebounds and one steal.

Emily Seuferer had two points, six rebounds, three steals and one assist.  Kendall Hardie and Saydee Terrell each had two points and one rebound.  Madison Showers had two points ant three steals.  Meredith Davis had five rebounds and one steal.

Varsity Boys and JV Boys Win over Clarke

Chariton Varsity Boys
A strong scoring effort and prowess on the board lifted the Chariton varsity boys to an 83-69 win at Clarke December 9th.  Center, T.J. Hockenson had a 20-20 game with 29 points, 21 rebounds including six offensive boards and one assist.  Daric Laing went 13-14 from the line and finished with a team high 31 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks.  With the win, Chariton improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

For the game, Chariton pulled down a whopping 49 rebounds including 15 offensive boards.  Chariton shot 25-48, 52 percent from inside the arc, and 3-14, 21 percent from three-point range.  Chariton shot 24-33, 73 percent, from the line.  Chariton had 12 turnovers and 10 fouls.  The Chargers dished out 21 assists and had six steals and five blocks.

The game was nip and tuck early as Chariton led 19-18 after one period.  The Chargers outscored the Indians 21-10 in the second to take a 40-28 lead into halftime.  The Indians outscored the Chargers 22-16 in the third to cut the lead to six heading into the final period.  However the Chargers scored their most points in the fourth with 27 and held off the Indians to get the win.

Willie Felderman had a double-double with 12 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks.  Christian Bengtson had 11 points, two rebounds, three assists and three steals.  Ben Morrett had two rebounds and four assists.  Brett Braida had two rebounds and two assists.  Alex Reynolds had one rebound, one block and one assist.

Chariton JV Boys
A  sterling defensive effort in the second and third periods lifted the Chariton JV boys to a 51-38 win at Clarke on December 9th.  The Chargers turned up the defensive intensity and held the Indians to just nine points in those two periods.  Quinn Storm again led the team in scoring with 19 points to go along with 12 rebounds, two assists, one steal and two blocks.  With the win, Chariton improved to 1-1 overall.
Chariotn started out strong and led 18-13 after one period.  The Indians outscored the Chargers 6-5 in the second but Chariton still led 23-19 at halftime.  Chariton played tenacious defense again in the third outscoring the Inidans 13-3 to take a 36-22 lead into the final period.  Clarke outscored Chariton 16-15 in the fourth but the Chargers maintained their double-digit lead and came out with the win.
Eleven players scored for Chariton.  Aaron Cain went 2-4 from trifecta land and finished with nine points, two rebounds, three steals and one assist.  Eduard Rodygin had five points, two rebounds, two steals and three assists.  Chase Altenhofen had four points, five rebounds and two steals.  Spencer Sherrick had four points, one rebound and one steal.
Bradley Krutsinger had two points, four rebounds, six steals, two assists and one block.  Sawyer Dow had two points, two rebounds and three assists.  Ethan Curnutte had two points, one rebound and one steal.  Grant Shriver had two points and one rebound.  Adam Kaska had one point and two rebounds.  Ben Sullenger had one point, one rebound and one block.  Carter Riechmann had five rebounds, one block, one steal and one assist.
For the game, Chariton shot 16-49, 33 percent, from inside the arc.  Chariton shot 2-6, 33 percent, from three point range.  The Chargers shot 13-31, 42 percent, from the line.  Chariton pulled down 38 rebounds including 16 offensive boards.  Chariton committed 21 turnovers and 15 fouls.  The Chargers had 12 assists, 17 steals and five blocks.

Chariton Wrestlers place Ninth at Independence Tournament

Harberts, Nance place fifth, Poush places sixth at Independence Tournament

The Chariton wrestlers traveled to Independence for the Independence Invitation on December 7th.  This was a very tough tournament featuring 38 ranked wrestlers and some of the top teams in northeast Iowa.  Chariton placed ninth out of 10 teams with 47.5 points.

Cedar Rapids Prairie won the tournament with 190 points.  Linn-Mar Marion was second with 164-5.  Alburnett was third with 157.5  Independence was fourth with 155 and Osage was fifth with 153.5.  North Fayette Valley was sixth with 144 and Cedar Rapids Xavier was seventh with 136.5.  Hampton-Dumont was eighth with 85.5.  Starmont was 10th with 34.

Drill Team Wins Hip Hop, 3rd in Pom at State

The Chariton High School Drill Team's  Competion Team, the Silver Team, had a banner showing at the Iowa State Drill Team Association State Championship at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines December 5 and 6.

The Silver Team competed in and won trophies in two categories including Hip Hop and Pom.  They won first place out of 12 teams in Class VI of the Hip Hop category and they placed third out of 12 teams in Class IX of the Pom category.  Chariton's team also received the "Award of Excellence" for their combined grade point average.

The Silver Team has 11 members including seniors Emily Grismore (captain), Cassie Carpenter and Taylor Pennington.  The team has one junior, Katey Herr and three sophomores including Alexis Curran, Mercedes Michael and Emma Nelson.  There are four freshman on the team including Mackenzie Curran, Kelsey Hockenson, Maddie Kaska and Courtney Quillin.

The coach of the CHS Drill Team is Bobbie Jo Vastine.

There were over 5,000 participants representing 278 high school dance teams and color guards.  Routines were performed and judged in several categories including Pom, jazz, novelty, lights, military, hip hop, lyrical, hoopla, prop, kick, slow production, color guard, all male and coed.

An expert panel of judges from across the United States judged the teams.  The judge's scores were based on appearance, choreography, execution, technique and general effect/showmanship.  Teams were also recognized for academics, community service and sportsmanship.

McDaniel, Adams Place Second at BGM Tourney

The Chariton JV wrestlers competed at the BGM JV Tournament in Brooklyn Dec. 6th.  The format was a four-man round robin.  Chariton had two wrestlers place second including 132 pounder Nick McDaniel and 138 pounder Sam Adams.  Blake Poush placed third at 160 and Ethan Downen placed fourth at 160.  The Chariton JV Coach is Zach Baughman.

At 132, McDaniel won by fall over Kordell Mueller of Lynnville-Sully in 39 seconds.  McDaniel lost to Jake Staroska of Grinnell by a 7-5 decision.  McDaniel won by fall over Kyle Underwood of Albia in  57 seconds.

At 138, Adams, lost by a 9-4 decision to Caleb Hasley of BGM.  He won by fall over Mike Miller of Davis County in 1:24.  He won by technical fall, 17-0, over Kyle Kramer of Lynnville-Sully.

At 160, Poush won by fall over Dakota Wueve of East Marshall in 34 seconds.  He lost by fall to Noah Reeves of Sigourney in 1:47.  He lost by fall to Kale Baird of Davis County in 3:30.  At 160, Downen, lost by fall to Dylan Dekraai of Davis County in 1:05.  He lost by fall to Christian Powless of Albia in 32 seconds.  He lost by fall to Noah Bender of Sigourney in 51 seconds.

Chariton Varsity Girls defeat Pleasantville

Fuhs and Showers have double doubles in win over Pleasantville

Stellar games by Emma Fuhs and Allyson Showers and a dynamite defensive effort lifted the Chariton varsity girls to a 55-36 win at Pleasantville on December 5th.  Fuhs and Showers both recorded double doubles for Chariton as Fuhs had a team-high 21 points and 15 rebounds while Showers had 19 points, 14 rebounds, five steals and two blocks.  With the win the Lady Chargers improved to 1-1 overall.

Chariton held an 11-10 lead after one period.  Then the Lady Chargers totally shut down the Trojans, outscoring them 20-0 in the second period to extend their lead to 31-10 at halftime.  Chariton outscored the Trojans 11-8 in the third to lead 42-18 after three periods.  Pleasantville outscored the Lady Chargers 18-13 in the fourth but it was far too little, too late.

For the game, Chariton shot 25-65 from the field and 5-12 from the line.  Pleasantville shot 11-44 from the field and 11-18 from the line.  Chariton out rebounded the Trojans, 46-28, and Chariton had 17 turnovers.  Chariton had 13 assists, 12 steals and two blocks and Pleasantville had five assists, nine steals and two blocks.  Grismore had seven points, Curan and Maria Blong had four apiece.

CMS Wrestlers win 17 matches at Winterset

On December 5th, the Chariton Middle School wrestlers traveled to Winterset to wrestle Norwalk, Creston and Winterset.  Chariton went 17-13 on the night and a number of wrestlers went undefeated.

Dylin Harberts, Gabe Ruepke, Jade Spencer and Hunter Cobb each went 2-0 on the night.  Hunter Neer went 1-0.

7th Red Girls Come up Short in Home Opener

The Chartion seventh grade girls Red team played their home opener against Centerville, December 5th.  Both teams shot coldly and unfortunately Chariton came up short by a 14-11 score.

The Red team missed numerous shots, may of which were lay ups.  As a team they shot 5-30 from the field and 1-7 from the charitoy stripe.  Chariton held Centerville to just four points in the second half, but couldn't get any shots to bring themselves up.

Two bright spots were the play of Grace Bengtson and Alysha Shutt.  Bengtson led the team with seven points, one rebound and one steal.  Shutt provided a spark off the bench with four points and three steals. Shayla Holohan had two rebounds and three steals.

Paige Burgett had two rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Shelby Dobberthein had one rebound, one steal and one assist.  Macy Johnson had one rebound and Erin Payton had one assist.  Natalie Ilyenko gave the Red team some good minutes off the bench.  Breanna Elllas had an injury and tried to play some minutes but was unable to sustain much playing time.

"We had a good effort tonight but couldn't quite pull it off.  I hope for better results when we visit Centerville in January," Chariton Head Coach Bruce Taylor said.

White Team wins easily

The White team played solidly against Centerville, winning 18-2.  Mikenzy Beatty and Leilani Plank had only four turnovers as they ran the offensive sets.  Chariton shot better in the game going 9-29, 31 percent.

Macy Beaty had two points, two steals and one assist.  Payton had two points, four steals and a game-high three assists.  Shutt had two points.  Emily Shelton had two rebounds, two steals and two assists.  Baylee Pollard had one steal.  Crystal Milam had one rebound.

"With 19 steals, the team is more aware of where the ball is when playing defense and anticipating.  As a result we gave up only two points this game, which is a nice aspect of the game to build on,:  Coach Taylor said.

Stites scores 21 in 8th A boys loss to Centerville
The Chariton eight grade boys A basketball team opened their season with a 51-33 loss at Centerville, December 5th.  Dylan Stites had a strong game for Chariton with 21 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Bradley Owens had six points and one rebound.  Tyler Anderson had four points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal.  Riley Voss had two points and one rebound.  Tanner Stephens had one assist and Kurt Showers had one rebound.
Boys 8th B
Chariton won the B game, 6-2.  Mark Ilyenko had two points, two rebounds and one steal.  Showers had two points, one rebound and one steal.  Owens had two points.

Red Team wins 43-16

The Chariton eighth grade girls Red team moved to 2-0 with a 43-16 win over Centerville at Chariton December 5.  The red team led 26-12 at halftime and outscored Centerville 17-4 in the second half to cruise to the win.  Aubrie Richards had a double-double with 18 points, 14 rebounds and two steals.  Ivy Swarthout had 12 points, one rebound, one steal and two assists.

Luci Swarthout had six points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Autumn Gwinn had four points and three rebounds.

Abbie Peterson had two points, two rebounds, one steal, two assists and three blocks.  Ashley Pfrimmer had one point, one rebound and two steals.  Tressa Shore had five rebounds.  Taytum Bacus had four rebounds and two steals.  Megan Schultz had one rebound and one steal.

White Team Wins

The White team also won, 26-10.  Jacklynn Johnson had 10 points, one rebound, six steals and one block.  Pfrimmer had six points, five steals and one assist.

Natalie Baird had two points, three rebounds and three steals.  Bacus had two points, two steals and one assist.  Schultz had two points, two rebounds and one assist.  Taylor Ingram had two points and one rebound.  Shelby Jensen had two points.

Taheton Decker had two steals and one assist.  Trinity Kemper had one rebound and two steals.  Kelsie Chester had one rebound.

7th A and B Boys Teams Beat Big Red
A and B boys basketball teams opened their season with victories on the road at Centerville, December 5th.  The Chargers A team beat the Big Reds, 37-23.  Nathan Blong had a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds.
"This was a good first game for us.  I was concerned that we would be shaky or nervous for our first game and was also nervous that Centerville, already having played three games, would have a big advantage over us.  Our kids really ran the floor well and our defense was pretty solid for our first outing.  I was extremely happy with how we dominated the boards, outrebounding Centerville, 27-8," Chariton Head Coach Mike Jones said.
"Nathan had a great offensive outing but also really dominated the boards.  We did turn over the ball a bit too much, but mostly due to things we can fix, like making better passes or knowing where we are at so we don't step on the baseline.  But overall, it was a good first outing,"  Coach Jones added.
The A Team shot 18-31, 58 percent, from the field.  Jackson Fisher had six points and five rebounds.  Royce Stuart had four points and one rebound.  Nathan Weaver had four points and two rebounds.  Noah Weaver had two points and four rebounds.
Chariton wins B Game 6-0
Chariton also won the B game, 6-0.  Micah Thatcher had two points and five rebounds and Jimmy Graham had two points and three rebounds.  Tyler Gookin had two points and two rebounds.
Ty White, Chance Anderson, Aaron Sullenger and Gus Ghormley had two rebounds each.  Ben Lahart, Luke Lahart and Garrett Roach each had one rebound.
"Like the A team, these kids needed to get some game experience.  Unfortunately, due to low numbers for Centerville, our game time was shortened so we didn't get as much floor time as we would've liked.  Very similarly to the A team, the B team also dominated Centerville in rebounds, 20-7.  I also liked how hard the kids played when they got into the game,"Coach Jones said.
"I thought we needed to get a bit more aggressive against the man to man pressure that Centerville put on our kids.  One area that concerns me  is poor shooting.  The A team shot a very good percentage while the B team struggled, only making three of 20 shots, 15 percent.  We will work to improve this," Coach Jones added.

Varsity Boys beat Trojans

A dynamite second half defensively lifted the Chariton varsity boys to a 66-56 win at Pleasantville  December 5th.  The Chargers led by one at halftime but outscored the Trojans by nine in the second half to get the double-digit win.  Daric Laing scorched the nets with a team-high 30 points including 5-8 shooting from beyond the arc or trifecta land.  He also had four rebounds, four assists and two steals.  With the win Chariton improved to 1-1 overall.

T.J. Hockenson had a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds including 12 defensive boards.  He also had one steal and one assist.  Ben Morrett had nine points, two rebounds, four assists and one steal.  Willie Felderman had seven points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Christian Bengtson had five points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Brett Braida had two points, two rebounds, one block and one assist.  Alec Reynolds had two points, one rebound and three assists.  Hunter Storm had one point and one rebound.

Chariton led 19-14 after one period.  The Trojans outscored the Charger 20-16 in the second to cut the lead to 35-34 at halftime.  Chariton turned up the defense in the third period and held the Trojans to just five points and increased their lead to 12 after three periods.  Pleasantville couldn't really cut into the lead as they outscored the Chargers just 17-15 in the fourth.

For the game, Chariton shot 15-36, 42 percent, from inside the arc and 7-13, 54 percent, from three point range.  The Chargers shot 15-22, 68 percent, from the line.  Chariton had 34 rebounds including 27 defensive boards.  Chariton committed just 11 turnovers and had 17 assists, seven steals and one block.  They also committed 18 fouls.

Chariton Academic Meet

Four academic teams from Chariton High School competed at the Eight Annual Chariton Academic Meet at CHS recently.  The highest finishing team from Chariton was Chariton A, which finished ninth overall.  

A team from CHS won the Chariton Academic Meet in 2010 and 2011 and they had a team finish second last year.  

Chariton B went 1-4 in the preliminary morning rounds.  Chariton C went 3-2 in the morning rounds.  Chariton D went 1-4 in the preliminary morning rounds.

The Chariton meet had 30 teams from 16 schools competing, which is the most it has ever had.  There were five rounds of preliminary matches followed up by an eight-team single elimination bracket for the top eight teams based on the morning rounds.

Slow Start Hurts JV Boys in Pleasantville

A slow start where they got into a hole was too much for the Chariton JV boys to overcome in a 40-38 loss at Pleasantville in their season opener on December 5th.  Quinn Storm led the Chargers with 14 points along with eight rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Pleasantville jumped out to an 8-2 lead after one period.  Chariton battled back to outscore the Trojans 12-10 in the second to cut the lead to 18-14 at halftime.  Chariton tied the game in the third period but wasn't quite able to take the lead.  The Chargers and Trojans each scored 13 in the third and Chariton outscored Pleasantville 11-9 in the fourth but it wasn't quite enough.

Bradley Krutsinger had seven points, two rebounds and one assist.  Aaron Cain had six points, three rebounds, five steals and two assists.  Spencer Sherrick had five points.  Eduard Rodygin had four points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Chase Altenhofen had two points and two rebounds.  Sawyer Dow had one block and one assist.  Ethan Curnutte had three rebounds and Carter Riechmann had three rebounds.  Adam Kaska had one rebound.

For the game, Chariton shot 14-36, 39 percent, from inside the arc and 2-10, 20 percent, from three point range.  Chariton shot 4-8, 50 percent, from the line.  The Chargers pulled down 25 rebounds including 12 offensive boards.  Chariton committed 11 turnovers and 16 fouls.  The Chargers had seven assists, nine steals and one block.

Tanner Poush gets 100th Career Win at Grinnell Double Dual Meet

The Chariton varsity wrestlers kicked off the season with a double dual against Grinnell and Oskaloosa at Grinnell December 5th.  In the match against Oskaloosa, 138 pounder Tanner Poush achieved the 100th win of his career.  The Chargers beat Oskaloosa in a close match, 39-33, and they lost the second match to Grinnell, 65-12.

CMS Wrestlers win 18 matches at Pella

The Chariton Middle School wrestling team started off their season on a high note with 18 wins at the Pella meet Dec 3.  Of their 18 wins, 13 were by pin.  Tanner Nance and Jade Spencer each went 3-0 and Dylin Harberts and Tommy Sommers each went 2-0 on the night.

Big game for Laing, Felderman, Hockenson

The Chariton varsity boys lost a close game in their opener, 72-67, to Interstate 35 on the road, December 3rd.  Chariton fell despite good offensive games from Daric Laing, Willie Felderman and T.J. Hockenson.  Laing led the team with 20 points on 7-9 shooting from inside the arc and going 6-6 from the line.  He also had six assists, three rebounds and two blocks.  Felderman had 18 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

Hockenson had a double-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds including 10 defensive boards and two assists.

Brett Braida had the team's only three-pointer and finished with five points, three rebounds and two assists.  Christian Bengtson had a team-high five blocks, three points and one rebound.  Ben Morrett had two points and three assists.  Alec Reynolds had two points and two rebounds.

For the game, Chariton shot 26-42, 62 percent, from inside the arc.  They shot 1-10 from beyond the arc or trifecta land.  The Chargers shot 12-18, 67 percent from the charity stripe.  Chariton pulled down 29 rebounds including five offensive boards.

The Chargers dished out 13 assists and had nine blocks.  Chariton took good care of the ball with just six turnovers.  The Chargers committed 24 fouls.
