The Chariton Varsity girls moved within one game of a repeat trip to the State Softball Tournament with a 1-0 win over Oskaloosa in nine innings in the 3A Region 7 semifinal game at Chariton Monday night, July 11th.
This game against Oskaloosa was a classic pitcher's duel and defensive battle where it seemed like no one would ever score. Chariton stranded base runners at different times such as in the top of the first. Bengtson drew a walk with one out and Grgurich had a base hit to put runners on first and second. However, Presley Swan and Abbee Curran both popped out to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
Chariton also threatened again in the top of the third, but couldn't get anyone across. With runners on both second and third, with one out, Grgurich drew a walk to load the bases. Presley Swan was up next and hit a grounder to short, who threw it to home for the force out. With the bases still loaded with two outs, Abbee Curran grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning and keep the score 0-0. The next batter had a good hit, but the center fielder caught it for the third out.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, Tanna Seuferer hit a sacrifice fly to left field on which Miranda Davis scored the winning run. After the catch, Davis tagged up and slid into home safely and the catcher dropped the ball for the run.
Bengtson and Grgurich both drew walks to load the bases with two outs. The next batter, Swan flew out to center for the third out, but the one run was all Chariton would need. Curran went 1-4 with a double. Swan went 0-5. Curran had one put-out. Swan had two assists.
