Charger Boys are SCC Champs

The Chariton varsity boys shown above are all smiles after winning the South Central Conference title outright with a 65-50 win over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont at Eddyville Feb 15th.  It was the first SCC title for the Chariton boys since 1999.  It was Chariton's 14th win in a row, moving them to 17-3 overall and giving them a final SCC record of 9-1.  (Bill Howes photo)

Charger Boys Soar Over Rockets to Clinch SCC Title

Ladies and gentlemen, the Chariton varsity boys are South Central Conference Champions!
The Chariton Varsity boys won the SCC title with a 65-50 win at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on February 15th.  Chariton won again despite not shooting very well with a strong defensive effort.  The win gave the Chargers a final conference record of 9-1 and their first SCC title since 1999.  It was also their 14th straight win and moved them to 17-3 overall.
T.J. Hockenson went 8-10 from the line and had a team-high 24 points, 17 rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block.  Daric Laing had 21 points, six rebounds, seven steals, one assist and one block.  Willie Felderman had 12 points, three rebounds, one assist, one steal and five blocks.

Christian Bengtson had five points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and two steals.  Brett Braida had two points and two assists.  Ben Morrett had three rebounds and five assist.  Joey Krutsinger had one rebound and one block.
Chariton Head Coach Ben Schooley was elated for the team afterwards.  "I am just so happy for the guys.  They have worked so hard and it's nice as a coach to see all of the hard work the boys have put in payoff.  They are such a great group of guys to work with and are a group the community can be proud of," he said.
Chariton led 13-8 after one period and increased their lead to 29-19 at halftime.  The Rockets outscored them 20-17 in the third to cut the lead to seven after three periods.  However, Chariton responded by outscoring the Rockets, 19-11 in the fourth to win by 15.
"This was a game where we didn't shoot the ball particularly well.  We were getting good shots, we just weren't knocking them down like we normally do.  I was proud of the defense we played most of the game, that's what helped us pull it out.  We played with great effort on the defensive end and didn't  allow them to get many easy baskets in transition and that allowed us to pull away a little," Coach Schooley said.
The Rockets wouldn't go away however and made the Chargers earn it.  "To Eddyville's credit, they hung in the whole game and kept making little runs at us.  I was just pleased with how our guys kept responding and kept pushing," Coach Schooley said.
For the game, Chariton shot 21-51, 41 percent, from inside the arc and 3-13, 23 percent, from three point range.  They also shot 14-19, 74 percent, from the line.  Chariton pulled down 40 rebounds including 16 offensive boards.  Chariton had a 2-1 assist to turnover ratio with 20 assists and  10 turnovers.  They also committed just seven fouls.  Chariton had 12 steals and eight blocks.

JV Boys Defuse Rockets with Big Win
The Chariton JV boys put forth a stellar all-around performance in a 56-36 win at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on February 15th.  The JV boys used a dominating defense effort and eight Chariton players got into the scoring column in the win.
Aaron Cain had 14 points, six rebounds, five steals, one assist and one block.  Quinn Storm had a double-double with 12 points and a team high 14 rebounds, four steals and two blocks.  Of his 14 rebounds, six were offensive boards.  Chase Altenhofen had 12 points and five rebounds.  Bradley Krutsinger had seven points, seven steals and five assists.  Carter Riechmann had four points, six rebounds, one assists and one block.  Spencer Sherrick had three points, one rebound, one assist and two steals.  Sawyer Dow had two points, four rebounds, and one assist.  Eduard Rodygin had two points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Ethan Payton had two steals and one block.  Adam Kaska had one rebound and two assits.  Ethan Curnutte had two rebounds and three assists.  Mathias Plank had one rebound.  Cody Evans had one assist.
"We played well in this game.  The kids were playing well and we were able to play a lot of players.  We played good defense throughout the game.  The boys were able to play well enough that their teammates would be able to get into the game," Chariton JV Hrad Coach Jay Pierschbacher said.
Chariton stormed out to a 15-7 lead after one period.  The Chargers outscored the Rockets, 11-9 in the second period to push their lead to 26-16 at halftime.  Chariton kept up their strong play after the break, outscoring the Rockets 15-10 in the third to lead 41-26 after three periods.  Chariton outscored the Rockets 13-10 in the fourth to win by 20.
For the game, Chariton shot 23- 51. 45 percent, from inside the arc and 3-12, 25 percent, from three point range.  The Chargers shot 1-8, 13 percent, from the line.  The Chargers were awesome on the boards, pulling down a whopping 42 rebounds including 16 offensive boards.
Chariton committed 16 turnovers and 15 fouls.  The Chargers dished out 16 assists and had 22 steals and five blocks.
