Scouts Tough it out in Sub-Zero Weather

The Lucas County Boy Scouts Troop #149 recently attended the Mid-Iowa Council Klondike at Hickory Hills Park on February 8th.
Sixteen boys and three leaders braved the cold weather to camp from Friday the 7th until the morning of Sunday the 9th.  Only one other troop from the district stayed and camped with the Chariton boys.
The temperature for Friday night was -5° while the temperature for Saturday only reached a high of 23° and dropped to 11° for the evening.  Despite the cold temperatures and fresh falling snow, the boys excelled in all the challenges the Klondike had to offer.  By the end of the competition, Troop #149 ended up coming home with first place.  The boys took top marks in the Log Long Haul, the Blindfolded Sled Race, the Scout Knowledge Questions and the Troop Klondike Sled Challenge.  They had the fastest times with fire building, and the heated drink challenge, as well as with shelter building and First Aid.
Patrol Leader Nathan Kalsem also shined by providing great leadership for the troop and was awarded the Klondike Leadership Award by the Leaders running the event.  This was not the first time for the boys to compete.  The Troop has always done very well at these Klondike camp outs, with them bringing home first place for the past few years.
Boys and Leaders to attend included Gideon Plank, Zach Ho, Austin Metzger, Kyle Goben, Tristen Michael, Matthias Plank, Nathan Kalsem, Stephen Sundquist, Gabe Heim, Grant Goering, Jamison Owens, Logan Caudill, Luke Lahart, Ben Lahart, Joel Hibbs, Mark Richardson, Nick Penrod, Levi Humphreys, Nathan Ho and Nicolas Ho,.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Chariton varsity boys are South Central Conference Champions!

"This was a game where we didn't shoot the ball particularly well.  We were getting good shots, we just weren't knocking them down like we normally do.  I was proud of the defense we played most of the game, that's what helped us pull it out.  We played with great effort on the defensive end and didn't  allow them to get many easy baskets in transition and that allowed us to pull away a little," Coach Schooley said.
The Rockets wouldn't go away however and made the Chargers earn it.  "To Eddyville's credit, they hung in the whole game and kept making little runs at us.  I was just pleased with how our guys kept responding and kept pushing," Coach Schooley said.

Chariton Leader, February 18, 2014
Bill Howes, Associate Editor

Lose to I-35, 45-38, End 2013-14 Season at 6-16

Despite a valiant effort, the Chariton varsity girls' season came to a close with a 45-38 loss to Interstate 35 at Truro in the first round of District action on February 15th.  Chariton trailed by single digits with a chance to cut it to two with under a minute left, but couldn't quite get over the hump.
It was the final game for seniors Allyson Showers, Emma Fuhs and Emily Grismore.  Showers had a strong final game with 19 points, 11 rebounds and one block.  Grismore had nine points, four steals and one block.  Alexis Curran had six points and four assists.  Carley Arnold and Fuhs had two points apiece.
With the win, I-35 advances to play North Polk.  Chariton also began the season against I-35, losing a close game to them, 39-34, at Truro back on Dec. 3rd.
Interstate 35 has three very good freshman players in 5'7" Slye Richardson, 5'10" Riley Morris and 6'1" Gracey Griglione.
In the teams'first meeting back in December, Morris had just two points.  However in this game she had 17 points.  Griglione had 12 points and Richardson had seven.
Chariton Head Coach Lee Sandy said one thing they tried to do was take away I-35's top scorers, Giglione and Richardson.  However they didn't figure on Morris scoring 17.
"We played well defensively and got off to a good start.  We tried to do things defensively to take away their top scorers.  But we did a poor job of taking away the weak side rebounds.  Griglione, Richardson and Morris are going to be very good over the next three years," Coach Sandy said.
Chariton came out of the gates strong and led 8-2 early and 10-9 after the first period.  I-35 outscored Chariton 18-11 in the second to take a 27 lead into halftime.  I-35 outscored Chariton 10-6 in the third to take a 37-27 lead heading into the final period.
Chariton had some foul trouble with both Fuhs and Showers fouling out.  The Lady Chargers trailed by nine in the fourth but trimmed the lead to five.
Chariton had a chance to cut the lead to two with 40 seconds left but couldn't convert at the line.
For the game, Chariton shot 14-43 from the field and 8-15 from the line.  I-35 shot 15-35 from the field and 14-25 from the line.  I-35 out-rebounded Chariton 25-22.
Each team had only 14 turnovers.  Chariton committed 21 fouls, I-35 committed 13.  Chariton had 10 assists, 15 steals and two blocks.  I-35 had five assists, six steals and four blocks.[
"We couldn't quite get it done tonight, but the kids played hard.  We lost a lot of close games this season, but they worked hard and were a great bunch of kids.  It makes a tough season a lot better when you've got great girls to coach,"  Coach Sandy said.

Varsity Boys Win, but Varsity Girls Fall To Davis County, JV Team Loses

Herald Patriot, February 20, 2014
Bill Howes, Associate Editor

Varsity Charger Boys Beat Davis County

Despite having an off night offensively, the Chariton Varsity boys played tough defense and scored 40 points in the second half to win, 63-58, at Davis County on February 13th. Chariton overcame a seven-point halftime deficit and kept their win streak alive, winning their 13th straight to move to 16-3 overall. With the win the Chargers also moved to 8-1 in the conference with one conference game left.
TJ Hockenson had a double-double with 26 points, 14 rebounds, one assist and two blocks.  Daric Laing had 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and one block.
Chariton started out slowly and trailed 15-11 after one period.  The Mustangs outscored them 15-12 in the second period to take a 30-23 lead into halftime.  Chariton picked it up in the third period, outscoring the Mustangs, 20-11, to take a 43-41 lead heading into the final period.  Chariton scored 20 points again in the fourth and held on for the five-point win.
"We didn't play very well offensively in this game.  We missed a lot of shots that we normally make and were just not our normal selves on the offensive end.  I thought that DC did a nice job of defending us all night.  I was very proud of the way the guys responded in the second half, however.  I thought we raised our level of intensity on the defensive end and we were able to get some stops and turn that into some transition baskets," Chariton Head Coach Ben Schooley said.
Coach Schooley said that the third quarter was the turning point.  "We played a really good third quarter and that got us back in the game.  Davis County is a tough place to play and I was pleased with the way the guys played with toughness.  We had some guys step up in this game both offensively and defensively when we needed it and that's a sign of a good team.  These guys continue to work extremely hard and improve every time they play," he said.
Chariotn struggled from both inside and outside the arc.  From two point range they shot 24-54, 44 percent.  They also shot 1-9, 11 percent, from three-point range.  The Chargers shot 12-18, 67 percent, from the line.  Chariton had 41 rebounds including eight offensive boards.  The Chargers committed 12 turnovers and 15 fouls.  Chariton dished out 17 assists and had nine steals and five blocks.

One key in the game was how well Chariton would defend Davis County senior point guard Shelby Graves.  Chariton struggled in this area as Graves finished with a game high 23 points.
"We had a hard time defending Graves tonight.  We received another good game from Allyson and we continue to struggle shooting from the outside.  We probably didn't play as well defensively as we had the past two or three games but Graves had a lot to do with that," Chariton Head Coach Lee Sandy said.
Davis County led 16-9 after one period.  The Lady Mustangs outscored Chariton 12-7 in the second to take a 28-16 lead into halftime.  Chariton was outscored 15-10 in the third and trailed 43-26 heading into the final period.  The Lady Chargers had their best offensive output of the night with 12 points in the fourth but it wasn't quite enough.

Chariton Varsity Boys Outlast Fairfield, JV Boys Loose

Herald-Patriot, February 20, 2014
Bill Howes, Editor

Varsity Boys Outlast Fairfield in Road Non-League Game

That's one way to describe the Chariton varsity boys' 69-57 win at Fairfield Tuesday, February 11th.  The Chargers jumped out to an early lead and held on throughout the game to get the win.  It was the 12th straight win for Chariton, improving their record to 15-3 overall.
Daric Laing, TJ Hockenson and Willie Felderman each had strong games for Chariton.  Laing had a team high 26 points along with six rebounds and three assists.  Hockenson had a double-double with 20 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, one steal and three blocks.
Chariton led 18-11 after one period, 17-15, in the second period to lead 35-26 at halftime.  Chariton outscored the Trojans, 18-11, in the third to lead 53-37 after three periods.  Fairfield wasn't able to cut into the lead much in the fourth.
"This was a game where I didn't feel like we were at our best, but we were able to grind it out and get the win.  I thought we did a nice job early of playing defense and making it difficult on them.  We were also fortunate that they missed some shots that they normally make.  I thought offensively we were a little out of sync in this game.  We didn't move the ball as well as we have in games past, but were able to make enough shots to get it done," Chariton Head Coach Ben Schooley said.
For the game, Chariton shot 23-46, 50 percent, from inside the arc and 2-11, 18 percent, from three point range.  The Chargers shot 17-25, 68 percent, from the line.  Chariton pulled down 37 rebounds, seven of which were offensive boards.  They also committed 16 fouls.  Chariton had a 3-1 assist to turnovers ratio with 24 assists to eight turnovers, which is outstanding.  Chariton had six steals and six blocks..
"We did a nice job of crashing the glass and getting some second chance points.  We also struggled late against their pressure and that's something we have to improve upon.  I thought we played with great effort in this game and that's important when you aren't playing your best," Coach Schooley said.
Christian Bengtson had four points, six rebounds, a team-high eight assists and three steals.  Ben Morrett had four points, three rebounds and four assists.  Brett Braida had one rebound and one assist.

"I was proud of the way the guys kept their composure and were able to answer that run and keep the lead.  I thought the guys played with great energy and effort all night.  Centerville is a good team and we played well to win.  We did a nice job of sharing the basketball and getting it to the open guy.  This allowed us to get good shots all night.  I was very pleased with our offense in this game.  We were able to get key stops late in the game and that was big for us," Chariton Head Coach Ben Schooley said.
For the game, Chariton shot 19-47, 40 percent, from inside the arc and 4-9, 44 percent, from three-point range.  The Chargers shot 21-28,  75 percent, from the line.  Chariton pulled down 28 rebounds including 11 offensive boards.  The Chargers took good care of the ball committing just nine turnovers.  Chariton committed 16 fouls.  The Chargers dished out 15 assists and had six steals and six blocks.

JV Chargers Lose Close Game to Centerville
The Chariton JV boys lost a hard fought game to Centerville, 44-42, at Chariton  February 7th.  The JV Chargers led by eight early but struggled in the second quarter.
They trailed by just two at halftime but couldn't quite get over the hump.
Aaron Cain led Chariton with 11 points, one rebound, one block and three steals.  Quinn Storm had seven points, six rebounds, three steals, two blocks and one assist.
Chariton started out very well and led 18-10 after one period.  In the second period Chariton struggled at both ends and was outscored 14-4.  Centerville led 24-22 at halftime.
"In the second quarter we struggled guarding and couldn't take care of the ball.  Our kids came ready to play.  The first quarter was the best quarter that we had played all year," Chariton JV Head Coach Jay Pierschbacher said.
Both teams scored 20 points apiece in the second half.  Centerville outscored Chariton 15-11 in the third to take a 39-33 lead after three periods.  Chariton came back to outscore Centerville 9-5 in the fourth but it wasn't quite enough.
"We lost to this team earlier in the year by 22 points, so our kids wanted to play well.  Centerville is a good team.  We weren't happy with our improvement alone, we wanted the win.  This is one we let slip away.  Our kids competed for three quarters, but it takes four to beat a good team like Centerville.  We're getting close to the end of the season and our goal is to continue to get better,"  Coach Pierschbacher said.
Eduard Rodygin had six points, one rebound, four steals and one assist.  Bradley Krutsinger had six points, three rebounds and one steal.  Spencer Sherrick had six points, two rebounds, one steal and one assist.  Carter Riechmann had two points, three rebounds and one block.  Chase Altenhofen had two points and one rebound.  Sawyer Dow had two points and one block.  Ethan Curnutte had one assist.  Adam Kaska had one steal.

--------------------------------------------
Varsity Girls Beat Centerville
In a very low scoring game, the Chariton varsity girls beat Centerville, 27-20, at Chariton February 7th.  Neither team scored more than eight points in any quarter and Chariton's tough, gritty defense proved  to be the difference in a hard fought win.  Alexis Curran led Chariton with nine points and also had two assists and three steals.
Allyson Showers had eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.  Emma Fuhs had a great game defensively with six blocks and three steals.  She also scored seven points and went 3-4 from the line down the stretch.  Emily Grismore had two points.  Carley Arnold had one point and five rebounds.
"We took care of the basketball tonight and played very well defensively.  But we didn't rebound well and shot very poorly."  Chariton Head Coach Lee Sandy said.
Chariton led 4-2 after one period and 11-9 at halftime.  The Lady Chargers went on an 8-0 run in the second half to open up a 19-9 lead.  Centerville went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 19-15 at the end of the third period.
Since Chariton was having trouble scoring, Coach Sandy said that for the last 50 seconds of the third period and the whole fourth period his team went into a delay game where they shot mainly lay ups and free throws.  The strategy worked largely because their defense was outstanding and they hit key free throws down  the stretch.  Chariton outscored Centerville 8-5 in the fourth to get the win.

The Chariton varsity boys won their 10th straight game with a 71-48 win over Mt. TJ Hockenson had 14 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals and three blocks.  Willie Felderman had 14 points, seven rebounds, one assist, one steal and five blocks.  Ben Morrett had six points, one rebound and three assists.  Christian Bengtson had five points, two rebounds, four assists and one steal.  Brett Braida had three points, two rebounds and two assists.  Alec Reynolds had three points, one rebound and one assist.  Joey Krutsinger had three points and two rebounds.  Hunter Storm had one rebound and two assists.  Quinn Storm had one rebound.
Chariton started out fast and raced to a 26-14 lead after one period.  The Chargers held the Raiders to just five points in the second period and led 41-19 at halftime.  Chariton outscored Mt. Ayr, 16-15, in the third to take a 57-34 lead after three periods.  Each team scored 14 points in the fourth.
"We played really well in the game.  I was most impressed with our defensive effort.  I thought we played our best defensive game of the year.  That has been our focus for awhile to improve our defense and it really showed in this game.  We played with a lot of energy and intensity on the defensive end and that was nice to see as a coach.  We didn't give Mt Ayr very many good looks,"  Chariton Head Coach Ben Schooley said.
"We also shot the ball really well on the offensive end.  We were able to make some threes early in the game and that's what gave us the early lead.  I thought we did a great job of sharing the basketball and getting it to the open guy.  Because of this we got great shots all night.  We also did a nice job of attacking the offensive glass and getting a lot of second chance points, which is always key to our success," Coach Schooley said.
For the game, Chariton shot 17-40, 43 percent, from inside the arc and 9-22, 41 percent, from three point range.  Chariton shot 10-18, 56 percent, from the charity stripe.  The Chargers had a 2-1 assist to turnover ratio with 21 assist and 10 turnovers.  They committed 12 fouls.  Chariton pulled down 34 rebounds including 13 offensive boards.  Chariton had nine steals and eight blocks.

Krutsinger Hits Game Winning Shot at Buzzer in Game Win Over Mt. Ayr
The Chariton JV boys won a tightly contested thriller against Mt. Ayr, 48-47, at Chariton on February 10th.  Chariton led by one after one period, two at halftime and trailed by two heading into the final period.  Bradley Krutsinger hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer to give the Chargers the victory.   Krutsinger led Chariton with a team-high 16 points, four rebounds, two assists, six steals and one block.

The game was tight early as Chariton led 15-14 after one period.  The Chargers outscored the Raiders  10-9 in the second period to take a 25-23 lead into halftime.  Mt. Ayr outscored the Chargers 10-6 in the third to take a 33-31 lead heading into the final period.
"We began pressuring Mt. Ayr because I just wanted to get the game moving.  It seemed to be at a very slow pace which isn't good for our team," Chariton JV Head Coach Jay Pierschbacher said.
The pressure helped, as the Chargers were able to open up a six point lead with three minutes left.  However Mt. Ayr rallied to take a one-point lead with one minute left.
Krutsinger made a key steal with 20 seconds left.  "We decided to go without a timeout because the kids seemed to be in a good flow and I thought we would be able to get a good shot," Coach Pierschbacher said.
This turned out to be correct as Cain got a great look from the wing and wasn't able to knock the shot down, but the Chargers hit the glass hard.  They got two more shots off but still weren't able to put it in.  However, Krutsinger came up with a huge offensive rebound and shot a nice turnaround jumper at the buzzer that gave Chariton the win.
"I was excited for the kids as they worked hard.  We played well enough to get the win," Coach Pierschbacher said.
For the game, Chariton shot 19-49, 39 percent, from inside the arc and 3-14, 21 percent, from three point range.  Chariton shot just one free throw in the game and went 1-1 from the line.  The Chargers pulled down 31 rebounds, 16 of which were offensive boards.  Chariton committed 10 fouls and had just 11 turnovers.  They had 10 assists, 16 steals and three blocks.
Sawyer Dow had four points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal.  Chase Altenhofen had two points, three rebounds and one steal.  Eduard Rodygin had two points, one rebound, one steal and one assist.  Spencer Sherrick had two points, one rebound and one assist.  Carter Riechmann had three rebounds and one block.  Ethan Curnutte had three rebounds.  Adam Kaska had one steal.

"In the first half tonight, we played the poorest we've played all year but in the forth quarter we played as well as we've played all year.  We got off to a really slow start for whatever reason. Allyson had a really good game and both she and Emily Grismore shot well from the line down the stretch,"  Chariton Head Coach Lee Sandy said.

JV Chargers Beat I-35, Get Edged by Van Meter at I-35 JV Tournament

Chariton Leader, March 11, 2014
Bill Howes, Associate Editor

The Chariton JV boys competed at the I-35 Tournament earlier this season.  The JV Chargers split a couple of games there, beating Interstate 35, 50- 48, and losing to Van Meter, 43-37.
Chariton 50, I-35 48
Chariton started off well in this game and led 19-11 after one period.  The Roadrunners outscored them 13-10 in the second to cut the lead to 29-24 at halftime.
Chariton held the Roadrunners to just eight points in the third period and led 41-32 after three periods.  I-35 came back in the fourth, outscoring Chariton 16-9, but it wasn't quite enough.
"We got off to a good start in this game.  This was nice to see because the schedule was changed when we got there and we had to play the first game.  Giving up 16 points in the fourth period was disappointing and made the game a lot closer than we wanted," Chariton JV Head Coach Jay Pierschbacher said.
Quinn Storm and Aaron Cain each led the team with 11 points.  Bradley Krutsinger had eight points.  Chase Altenhofen had seven points.  Spencer Sherrick and Ethan Curnutte had three points apiece.  Eduard Rodygin and Carter Riechmann had two points apiece.
-----------------------------------------------------
Van Meter 43 Chariton 37
This game was a tale of two halves where Chariton outscored Van Meter, 25-17, in the first half but Van Meter, outscored them 26-12 in the second half.  Storm led the Chargers with 12 points.
"We did an excellent job and really played good defense in the first half.  But you're not going to win many games just scoring 12 points like we did in the second half.  We had too many turnovers against their second half press.  We just couldn't get enough scores for them to drop the pressure," Coach
Pierschbacher said.
Chariton led 12-9 after one period and increased their lead to 25-17 at halftime.  Van Meter outscored them 13-6 in the third to cut the lead to one after three periods.  They also outscored the JV Chargers 13-6 in the fourth to get the win.
Cain had eight points and Altenhofen had seven.  Sawyer Dow had four and Krutsinger and Adam Kaska had three apiece.  Riechmann had two points.
"This game was frustrating for the boys, having such a good first half only to fall apart in the  second half and lose to a good team's pressure defense," Coach Piershbacher said.
