Austin Peterson Signs Letter of Intent

Chariton High School senior, Austin Peterson, signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Muscatine Community College in Muscatine, Iowa, recently.  As a junior, Peterson was a first team All-Conference selection and First Team All-District selection as a second baseman for the Charger baseball team in 2012.  He was also named to the Iowa Newspaper Association's Class 3A All-State baseball team.  Peterson was a second team All-State selection as an infielder and finished the regular season with a 447 average.

Tough Defense Gives Win to Varsity Boys

A great defensive effort payed off for the Varsity boys in their game against Pleasantville on January 26th.  The Chargers led 37-28 at halftime and held the Trojans to just 11 points in the second half, winning by a wide margin.  Chariton took the win with a score of 60-39.  Daric Laing completed four out of eight at the three point range to finish with a team-high 21 points, eight rebounds and one assist.  T.J. Hockenson had a double-double with 19 points, 13 rebounds and one steal.  With the win, Chariton is now 14-3 overall.  Chariton jumped out to a 16-2 lead early and led 18-9 after one period.  Chariton's defense clamped down and held the Trojans to just five points in the third quarter and six in the fourth.  The Chargers scored 23 second half points which was more than enough with their ball-hawking defense.  Alex Wright had 10 points, six rebounds and two assists.  Bryce Cunningham distributed the ball very well with a team-high 12 assists along with four points, four rebounds and one steal.  Willie Felderman had two points and seven rebounds.  Christian Bengtson had two points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal.  Carl Williams had two points and two rebounds.  Ben Morrett had one rebound and one assist.  Chariton committed just 10 turnovers on the night.

9th Boys Lost Game to Pleasantville

The Chariton freshmen boys lost to Pleasantville, 33-18.  Spencer Sherrick led the Chargers in scoring with seven points to go along with five rebounds.  For the game, Chariton shot 6-23, 26 percent, from inside the arc and 1-14, seven percent, from three-point range.  The Chargers shot 3-7, 43 percent, from the line.  Chariton pulled down 21 rebounds and committed 17 turnovers, and seven fouls.  The Chargers had five assists and four steals and no blocks.  Aaron Cain had three points, two rebounds and one assist.  Brad Krutsinger had three points, four rebounds, one steal and two assists.  Chase Altenhofen had three points, six rebounds and two steals.  Grant Shriver had two points.  Adam Kaska had two rebounds and one assist.  Ethan Curnutte had one steal and one assist.  Cody Evans had two rebounds.  Sam Lerner had one rebound.

7th Boys A Team Wins by One Point over Pleasantville

The Chariton seventh grade A boys' team pulled out a thrilling 33-32 come from behind win over Pleasantville.  Dylan Stites had a team-high 17 points.  Chariton didn't take care of the ball very well in the first half, turning it over 12 times and falling behind 21-13, at halftime.  However, Chariton picked up the defensive pressure and attacked the taller Pleasantville defense in the second half to pull back into the game.  The Chargers had a chance to put the game away in the fourth quarter but missed some free throws down the stretch.  Dylan did a very good job of attacking and creating shots.  Tommy Sommers did a very good job of offensive rebounding.  Sommers had six points.  Tyler Anderson had four points.  Conner Lundy, David Williams and Tanner Stephens each had two.

Chariton B Team Beat Pleasantville, 6-5

Chariton also won the B game, 6-5.  Gideon Plank scored four points and Riley Voss scored two.  The game was shortened due to the number of kids, but all of Chariton's B team members contributed in this game.  Bradley Owens did a nice job of stepping into a new position.  Conner Bregar was a rebounding force in the game.

Varsity Girls win third in a row against Pleasantville.

Three in a Row! Varsity Girls win third straight game against Pleasantville, 61-27 at Chariton on January 26.  Chariton once again did outstanding defensively forcing 29 turnovers and getting 13 steals while out-rebounding the Trojans by a 2-1 margin.  Miranda Davis and Chelsea McGee once again had strong games for Chariton, which moved them to 6-10 overall.  Pleasantville sophomore, Kennedy Core, who came into the game averaging almost 19 points a game, was shut down in the second half.  She scored 14 points in the first half and was held to six in the second half.  For Chariton, Davis had a team-high 18 points, five assists, four steals and one block.  McGee just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.  She also had one block.  Emma Fuhs had eight points, eight rebounds and one block.  Alexis Curran had seven points and five assists.  Allyson Showers had six points.  Kylie Bengtson and Maria Blong each had two points.  Leah Dow had two points and one block.  Nikki Vande Lune had one point.

9th/10th Grade Girls Beat Pleasantville at Home

The Chariton ninth and tenth grade girls beat Pleasantville, 30-6, at Chariton on January 26th.  Maria Blong had 11 points, five rebounds and four steals.  Delaney Richards had five points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists.  Sarah Fuhs had four points, three rebounds and two steals.  Haley Reece had three points and four rebounds.  Carli Arnold had two points, three rebounds and two steals.  Madison Showers had two points, two rebounds and two steals.  Meredith Davis had two points, two rebounds, two rebounds, seven steals, one assist and one block.  Jessica Wiederholt had one point, one rebound and two steals.  Emily Seuferer had two rebounds.  Riley Heffron had one rebound.

8th Grade Girl's Win 47-6 over Pleasantville

A balanced team effort lifted the CMS 8th girls to win.  The girls Red team played a well balanced game at Chariton Middle School on January 28 and got the win.  Nine players scored for Chariton and the Chariton girls played outstanding defense.  Mackenzie Curran and Kendall Hardie each had 11 points.  Curran had six steals and one assist and Hardie had two rebounds and one steal.
Chariton held the Trojans to just four points in the first half and led 24-4 at halftime.  The Chargers outscored the Trojans, 23-2 in the second half.
Sophia DeMaria and Saydee Terrell each had six points.  Carlie Schaeffer had four points, two steals and one assist.  Mackenzie Thomas-Clark had three points and one assist.  Abby Storm had two points, three rebounds and two steals.  Allison Summerfield and Anna Ilyenko had two points apiece.  Tiffany Dale and Riley Rector also played.

8th Grade White Team Wins by Four

The Chariton White team won a close game, 14-10.  Anna Ilyenko had six points, three rebounds and two steals.  Allison Summerfield had four points and two rebounds.  Morgan Cochran had four points and one rebound,.  Carlie Schaeffer had one steal and one assist.  Althea Williams had one rebound.  Aimee Greiner also played.

7th Red and White Girls' Teams Rout Pleasantville

The Chariton seventh grade girls' Red team had a resounding 70-20 win over Pleasantville at Chariton January 28th.  Ivy Swarthout had a double-double with 22 points, 10 steals, three rebounds and two assists.  Hannah Isley had 21 points, three rebounds, six steals and four assists.
Pleasantville was somewhat limited as they used some players to help out the limited number of eighth graders available for the earlier game.  Chariton had a season-high 70 shots along with 23 steals.  Chariton shot 33-70, 47 percent, from the field and 4-15, 27 percent, from the line.  Luci Swarthout had 14 points, three rebounds and three steals.  Aubrie Richards had nine points, 10 rebounds, two steals and one block.  Abbie Peterson had four points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists.  Tressa Shore had one rebound.  Autumn Gwin had one block.

The White team also played hard and won 14-0.  Ashley Pfrimmer had four points and two steals.  Jacklynn Johnson had four points and one steal.  Megan Schultz had two points and one steal.  Autumn Gwinn had two points and one rebound.  Taytum Bacus had two points.  Danica Derringer had two rebounds.  Trinity Kemper had one rebound, one steal and one assist.  Tressa Shore had one rebound.

An Outstanding Defense Gives Win to Varsity Boys

A stellar defense lifted the Charger varsity boys to a 71-51 win at Davis County on January 25th.  T.J. Hockenson went 10-12 from the field and 7-7 from the lien to finish with a team-high 27 points and 15 rebounds.  he also had three assists and one steal.  Daric Laing had 17 points, one rebound, five assists and two steals.  Alex Wright had 10 points, four rebounds, one block, two steals and one assist.  With the win, Chariton moved to 7-2 in conference play and 13-3 overall.
Bryce Cunningham had seven points, eight assists, five rebounds and two steals.  Willie Felderman had four points, four rebounds and two assists.  Christian Bengtson had four points, two rebounds, two assists and one block.  Carl Williams had two points, five rebounds and one block.  
For the game Chariton shot 24-47, 51 percent, from inside the arc and 4-8 from three-point range.  The Chargers shot 11-14, 79 percent from the line.  Chariton pulled down 36 rebounds including 28 defensive boards.

Varsity Girls Keep Up Winning Streak

The Chariton varsity girls won their second game in a row with an impressive 53-39 win over Davis County at Chariton on January 25th.  Chariton's Miranda Davis had a huge game with 24 points and 10 rebounds to shut down The Lady Mustangs.  After the first half, Chariton held Davis County to just 13 points and crushed them on the boards, 38-24, to get the win.
Davis County's Rylee Eakins entered the game ranked eighth in Class 3A in scoring and leading 3A in rebounding and blocks.  She had had a double-double in every game this season and Chariton held her to 12 points and eight rebounds.  Shelby Graves had been averaging 26 points over the past four games but Chariton held her to 14 points.  Chelsea McGee had seven points and three blocks.  Allyson Showers had a team-high 13 rebounds, two points and two assists.  Emma Fuhs had six points.  In her first game back from an ankle injury, Bengtson had two points and two assists.  Emily Grismore had one point.

CHS JV Boys Fall to Davis County

January 25th the JV boys played hard but came up a little short in a 56-51 loss at Davis County.  Chariton's Conner Altenhofen led the Chargers with 19 points to go along with nine rebounds.  Brett Braida had 11 points along with six rebounds, one steal and three assists.
Davis County took a 37-29 lead at halftime by outscoring the Chargers 19-15 in the second period.  The Chargers were outscored 11-6 in the third and trailed 48-35 after three periods.  Chariton had their best offensive quarter of the night in the fourth, outscoring Davis County 16-8, but it wasn't quite enough.
Joey Krutsinger had eight points, four rebounds and one steal.  Ben Morrett had seven points, two rebounds, four assists and one steal.  Quinn Storm had four points, six rebounds and two assists.  Hunter Storm had two points and two rebounds.  Alec Reynolds had six rebounds, one steal and three assists.  Sean Sullenger had one rebound and two blocks.  Sawyer Dow had two rebounds and one assist.

JV Girls Fall to Davis County

Davis County beat the JV Girls' basketball team, 55-27.  Davis County led 28-17 at halftime.  Nikki Vande Lune led Chariton in scoring with nine points to go along with one rebound, one steal and one block.  Kelsey Carver had eight points and one rebound.  Sarah Fuhs had three points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Carley Arnold had three points, one rebound and one block.  Delaney Richards had two points, three rebounds, one steal and two blocks.  Maria Blong had two points and one rebound.  Meredith Davis had three rebounds and one steal.  Alexis Curran had one rebound, four steals and one assist.  Emily Seuferer and Haley Reece each had a rebound.

9th Chargers Beat Davis County 45-35

Brad Krutsinger led Chariton with 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals as the 9th Chargers beat Davis County 45-35 at Davis County.  For the game, Chariton shot 15-43, 35 percent, from inside the arc and 1-10, 10 percent, from three point range.  The Chargers shot 12-28, 43 percent, from the line.  Chariton committed 14 turnovers and 13 fouls.  The Chargers had 38 rebounds, 12 assists, 13 steals and one block.
Aaron Cain had 11 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.  Chase Altenhofen had nine points, 11 rebounds and one assist.  Spencer Sherrick had six points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists.  Max Covington had three points.  Grant Shriver had two points, three rebounds and one steal.  Cody Evans had one point and one rebound.  Sam Lerner had one point.  Adam Kaska had one rebound, three steals and two assists.  Ethan Curnutte had three rebounds and one assist.  Ethan Payton and Kyle Dooley also played.

Two Point Win Over Davis County for 9/10th Grade Girls

A strong second half lifted the Chariton ninth and tenth grade girls to a 36-34 win over Davis County January 25th.  Chariton trailed 26-17 at halftime, but outscored the Mustangs, 19-8, in the second half to get the win.  Maria Blong led Chariton in scoring with 12 points to go along with one rebound and four steals.  Emily Seuferer had eight points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks.  Sarah Fuhs had six points, four rebounds, two steals and one block.  Delaney Richards had five points, one rebound and one steal.  Meredith Davis had four points and one rebound.  Carley Arnold had two points, three rebounds and two blocks.  Nikki Vande Lune had two rebounds and one assist.  Haley Reece had two rebounds.  Jessica Wiederholt had one steal.

8th Girls Win Over Davis County

The 8th grade girls Red team had an all-around good performance giving them a 39-17 win over Davis County.  Chariton raced to a 25-11 halftime lead and outscored Davis County 14-6 in the second half.  Nine players scored for Chariton and they were led by Mackenzie Curran, who had nine points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Sophia DeMaria had eight points, five rebounds and one steal.  Kendall Hardie had five points, one rebound and one steal.  Saydee Terrell had four points, two rebounds, four steals and one assist.  Carlie Schaeffer had four points, four steals and two assists.  Riley Rector had three points and six rebounds.  Tiffany Dale had two points, three rebounds and one steal.  Allison Summerfield had two points, one rebound and one steal.  Mackenzie Thomas-Clark had two points and one steal.  Abby Storm had two rebounds and one steal.

8th White team loses by two

The White team lost a close game to Davis County, 15-13.  Morgan Cochran had four points, two rebounds and one steal.  Carlie Schaeffer had four points.  Anna Ilyenko had two points, one rebound and five steals.  Summerfield had two points, one rebound and one assist.  Mackenzie Thomas-Clark had one point.  Storm had two steals.  Althea Williams and Aimee Greiner each had a rebound.

7th Grade Red Girls' Team

Stellar games by Ivy and Luci Swarthout, in a relentless defensive effort, helped lift the 7th grade Red girls' team to a 44-12 win over Davis County at Chariton January 21st.  Luci Swarthout led the team in scoring with 19 points, along with seven steals, two rebounds and two assists.  Ivy Swarthout had 18 points, nine steals, two rebounds and five assists.  The win kept Chariton's conference record perfect heading into their game with Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.  Chariton used their full-court pressure and their transition game to shut down Davis County's offense and to build a 24-8 halftime lead.  Hannah Isley had four points, three rebounds, seven steals, two assists and one block.  Abbie Peterson had two points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.  Aubrie Richards had one point, seven rebounds, four steals, one assist and one block.  Taytum Bacus had one steal.  Autumn Gwinn and Tressa Shore came into the game and provided good minutes when needed.

7th Grade White Team Wins

The Chariton White team was impressive in a 16-2 win over the Mustangs.  Taytum Bacus led the team in scoring with eight points to go along with five steals.  The win kept the White team's record perfect going into their game at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, whom Chariton beat by three points at home.  Ashley Pfrimmer had two points and two rebounds.  Tressa Shore had two points, one rebound and two steals.  Trinity Kemper had two points and one rebound.  Natalie Baird had two points, one rebound and one steal.  Megan Schultz had three rebounds, two steals and two blocks.  Autumn Gwinn had three rebounds.  Danica Derringer had two rebounds, three steals and an assist.  Chariton shot 6-25, 24 percent from the field.

Girls Varsity Huge Win In Overtime!

For the first time in history, Coach Lee Sandy has two girls with double-double in a game

64-61 win over Central Decatur gave the Chariton girls a huge win.  The Cardinals entered the game with a 13-2 on the season.  On January 21 the Cardinals knocked off the #1 team in Class 1A, Bedford, by 10 points.  Bedford played for the state title last season and returned four starters from a year ago.
Chariton also made history in this game as both Miranda Davis and Chelsea McGee each had double-doubles.  It's the first time Coach Lee Sandy has ever had two girls have double-doubles in the same game.  Davis had a great line with 23 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and four assists.  McGee had 13 points, 10 rebounds and one block.  Alexis Curran also had a strong game with 12 points, four assists and four steals.  Starter Kylie Bengston didn't play in this game due to a sprained ankle she suffered in the Knoxville game two nights before.  Emma Fuhs had seven points and one block.  Allyson Showers had six points and one block.  Emily Grismore had two points and Leah Dow had one.

9th/10th Girls Fall to Central Decatur

The Chariton ninth and tenth grade girls lost a non-conference game at Central Decatur, 37-18.  Chariton trailed 28-6 at halftime and wasn't quite able to come back.  Meridith Davis had four points, four rebounds and one steal.  Sarah Fuhs had four points, three rebounds and two steals.  Maria Blong had four points, one rebound and four steals.  Haley Reece had two points and two rebounds.  Jessica Wiederholt had two points, one rebound and one steal.  Kelsey Carver had one point, one rebound, two steals and one assist.  Madison Showers had one point and one steal.  Delaney Richards had two rebounds and two steals.  Emily Seuferer had two rebounds.  Nikki Vande Lune had two rebounds and one steal.  Carley Arnold had five rebounds, one steal and one block.  Ryley Heffron had two rebounds.

9th Boys Beat PCM in OT

The Chariton freshman boys' basketball team beat PCM, 39-37, in overtime at Chariton on January 24th.  Aaron Cain had a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals.  Brad Krutsinger also had a double-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block.  Spencer Sherrick had seven points, two rebounds, two blocks, three steals and two assists.  Chase Altenhofen had 11 rebounds, three points, one block and one steal.  Ethan Curnutte had three points.  Adam Kaska had two points, three steals and one assist.  Cody Evans had one rebound.

Varsity Boys Win over Knoxville

Laing, Hockenson Each Have 20 Points

The Chariton varsity boys came away with a 66-53 win at Knoxville on Knoxville's Go Pink Night on January 19th.  Daric Laing and T.J. Hockenson each had a 20-point game for the Chargers.  Laing went 5-6 from inside the arc and 1-2 from the three-point range to finish with 20 points, three rebounds, three steals and three assists.  Hockenson went 6-8 from the field and 8-13 from the line and finished with a double-double of 20 points, a team-high 12 rebounds, one steal and two blocks.  Alex Wright went 7-8 from the line and had 16 points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal.  With the win, Chariton improved to 12-3 overall.  Bryce Cunningham had eight points, a team-high 11 assists, four rebounds and one steal.  Willie Felderman had two points, two rebounds and one assist.  Christian Bengtson had two rebounds and Carl Williams had one.

Varsity Girls Lose to Knoxville 39-36

Early foul trouble and too many missed free throws early were both key factors in the Chariton varsity girls loss at Knoxville.  Even though Chariton played an excellent game defensively and held a three-point lead with three minutes left, they just couldn't quite hang on for the win.  Senior guard, Kylie Bengtson suffered a sprained ankle in the third period and didn't play the rest of the game.    With the loss, Chariton Girls are now 3-10 overall.
Allyson Showers sat most of the first half in foul trouble.  Sarah Fuhs came in when Kylie got hurt and gave some good minutes in the first half when we had foul trouble.  Emily Seuferer gave us some good minutes in the first half when there was foul trouble.  Emily Grismore had three points.  Alexis Curran had two points, four steals and two assists.  Chelsea McGee had two points.  Emma Fuhs had six rebounds and a team-high four blocks.

8th Girls Beat Knoxville in Final Game of the Year

The Chariton eighth grade girls Red team closed their season with a nailbiting 29-27 win over Knoxville at Chariton January 29th.  Knoxville led 19-9 at halftime but Chariton rallied to tie the game in the second half.  With time running down, Kendall Hardie made a last second shot to win the game for Chariton.  Carlie Schaeffer had nine points, nine steals, two rebounds and one assist.  Saydee Terrell had eight points, seven rebounds, three steals and one assist.  Hardie had five points, two rebounds, five steals and one assist.  Sophia DeMaria had four points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Tiffany Dale had one point and three rebounds.  Mackenzie Curran had one point, one rebound and two steals.  Abby Storm had one point, one rebound and one steal.  Mackenzie Thomas-Clark had one rebound.

7th A Boys Fall/ B Team Wins Against Eddyville

The Chariton seventh grade boys' basketball team A lost to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, 45-27, at Chariton January 24th.  Tyler Anderson led the Chargers in scoring with 12 points.  Dylan Stites had nine points, Tommy Sommers had four points and Tanner Stephens had two.  Tyler was moved to guard in an attempt to take some pressure off him and free him up for some shots.  He led the team in scoring.  Tanner Stephens and Gideon Plank played well and got in more offensive sets taking over at the point guard position.

The Chariton B team edged Eddyville, 6-5.  Riley Voss scored four points and Gideon Plank scored two points.  Offense and ball handling in the last few minutes payed off.  Kurt Showers did an outstanding job of rebounding.

9th/10th Girls Fall to Reds

Basketball at Centerville encountered a loss for the 9th and 10th grade girls.  They lost, 32-26.  Chariton trailed, 19-11 at halftime and they outscored Centerville, 15-13 in the second half.  Emily Seuferer led Chariton in scoring with nine points to go along with two rebounds, four steals and one assist.  Alexis Curran had five points, one rebound and two steals.  Nikki Vande Lune had three points, six rebounds, two steals and one block.  Carley Arnold had three points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist.  Maria Blong had two points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist.  Madison Showers had two points.  Delaney Richards had one point, one rebound and one block.  Sarah Fuhs had three rebounds and Kelsey Carver had two steals.  Haley Reece had one rebound.

CMS 8th Red Girls Fall to Centerville

A sluggish first half hurt the Chariton eighth grade girl's Red team in a 33-28 loss at Centerville January 17th.  Chariton trailed 24-10 at halftime and outscored Centerville 18-9 in the second half, but it wasn't quite enough.  Carlie Schaeffer had eight points, two rebounds and three steals.  Riley Rector had eight points and three rebounds.  Saydee Terrell had six points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks.  Sophia DeMaria had four points, three rebounds and one block.  Kendall Hardie had two points, two rebounds and two assists.  Mackenzie Curran had two rebounds and one assist.

White Team remains unbeaten with an 18-5 win over Centerville

Chariton had a balanced scoring attack with six players scoring.  Allison Summerfield had four points, three rebounds, two steals and one block.  Abby Storm had four points, two rebounds and one steal.  MacKenzie Thomas-Clark had four points and two steals.  Tiffany Dale had two points and two rebounds.  Morgan Cochran had two points and one rebound.  Anna Ilyenko had two points, one rebound and three steals.  Althea Williams had one rebound.

The Chariton seventh grade girls basketball Red team cruised to a 63-12 win at Centerville on January 17th.  Ivy Swarthout had 29 points, two rebounds, 10 steals, two assists and one block.  Hannah Isley had 20 points, three rebounds, 11 steals, one assist and one block.  Aubrie Richards had eight points, six rebounds, three steals, four assists and one block.  Luci Swarthout had six points, three rebounds, four steals and two blocks.  Abbie Peterson had three rebounds and two assists.

7th Girls White Team Wins

The White team continued their stellar play with a 12-3 win.  Tressa Shore had a balanced all-around game with six points, two rebounds and two steals. Varsity Girls win over Albia 39-29

Big Game by Alexis Curran Lifted Varsity Girls to win over Albia

Good defense in the second quarter and a big game by Alexis Curran helped lift the Chariton varsity girls to a win over Albia at the Charger Dome on January 18, 2013.  Alexis Curran had a team-high 13 points and three steals and went 5-6 from the line down the stretch.  Chariton's defense was awesome as they held Albia to just nine first half points including zero in the second quarter.  Allyson Showers also had a stellar game for Chariton with 10 points, a team-high eight rebounds and five steals.  Miranda Davis had seven points, seven rebounds and two assists.  Kylie Bengtson had five points and two assists.  Emma Fuhs had two points and two blocks.  Chelsea McGee had two points.

9th/10th Girls Sweep Albia

A very fast start and a balanced scoring attack propelled the Chariton 9th./10th grade girls to a 30-15 win over Albia at Chariton January 18th.  Chariton stormed out to a 22-2 lead at halftime and coasted to the win.  Maria Blong had eight points, two rebounds and two steals.  Sarah Fuhs had eight points, one rebound, two steals and one assist.  Haley Reece had six points, two rebounds and one steal.  Madison Showers had two points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist.  Delaney Richards had two points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist.  Nikkie Vande Lune had two points, one rebound and two steals.  Jessica Wiederholt had two points and one rebound.  Carlee Arnold had four rebounds, one steal and one block.  Emily Seuferer had four rebounds.  Meredith Davis had three rebounds.  Riley Heffron had one rebound and one steal.  Tori Bauer had one rebound.

Cunningham had 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
January 18th, the strong defense by the Chargers basketball team contributed to the game win over Albi, 56-49.  At halftime they only led by one and outscored the Blue Demons, 31-25 in the second half to get the win.  Daric Laing led the Chargers in scoring with 19 points to go along with eight rebounds, one block, two steals and one assist.  Bryce Cunningham went 9-11 from the line to finish with 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.  T. J. Hockenson had a double-double with a team-high 18 rebounds including 13 defensive boards and 15 points.  He also had one assist.  Alex Wright had five points, six rebounds and two steals.  Christian Bengtson had two points, two rebounds and one block.  Willie Felderman had two rebounds, one block and two assists.  Carl Williams had one rebound.  The Chargers are now 12-3 overall due to being strong and playing hard.

Slow Start Hurts JV Boys in loss to Albia

The JV Boys couldn't quite come back after a slow start against Albia.  They trailed 24-12 at halftime and lost by a score of 40-30.  With the loss, Chariton moved to 6-5 overall.  Drew Derringer led Chariton in scoring with six points.  Conner Altenhofen had five points, a team-high 10 rebounds, one steal and one assist.  Quinn Storm had four points and seven rebounds.  Sean Sullenger had four points and one rebound.  Bret Braida had four points and two assists.  Alec Reynolds had two points, one rebound, two steals and one assist.  Ben Morrett had two points and one rebound.  Sawyer Dow had two points, one rebound and two steals.  Hunter Storm had one point, six rebounds, one block and two assists.  Joey Krutsinger had one rebound, two blocks, one steal and one assist.  Ben Sullenger had two rebounds.  Eduard Rodygin had one assist.

9th Chargers Fall to Albia


The Chariton freshman boys' team fell to Albia, 58-29, at Chariton January 18th.    Spencer Sherrick led the Chargers in scoring with 14 points to go along with two rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Chase Altenhofen had 11 points, six rebounds, three steals and one assist.  Brad Krutsinger had two points, two rebounds, five assists and three steals.  Cody Evans had one point, two rebounds, one assist and one steal.  Sam Lerner had one point and one rebound.  Adam Kaska had three rebounds and two steals.  Ethan Curnutte had four rebounds.  Max Covington had two rebounds.  Ethan Payton had one rebound and Grant Shriver had one assist.  Kyle Dolley also played.

Three Wins, One Loss at Eddyville

Hard Fought Game by Varsity Boys

The Chariton varsity boys won a hard fought game, 57-48 at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Monday night the 14th of January.  Chariton led by two early and by eight at halftime and had four players reach double figures in the win.  Daric Laing led Chariton in scoring with 20 points along with two rebounds, one steal and three assists.  T.J. Hockenson had 11 points, three rebounds and one block.  With the win, Chariton moved to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
Alex Wright had 10 points, a team-high eight rebounds, one block, two steals and three assists.  Bryce Cunningham had 10 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and one steal.  Willie Felderman had four points, four rebounds, three steals and three assists.  Carl Williams had two points and three rebounds.  Christian Bengtson had three rebounds and two assists.  Brett Braida had one assist. 

JV Boys Shellac Eddyville

An outstanding defensive effort was key for the Chariton JV boys in a 53-20 win at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on January 14th.  The JV Chargers defense was awesome all night not allowing more than seven points in any quarter.  Conner Altenhofen had a double-double with a team-high 12 points and 10 rebounds along with a block and a steal.  With the win, Chariton moved to 6-4.  Ben Morrett had eight points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists.  Brett Braida had eight points, three rebounds and four assists.  Sawyer Dow had eight points, four rebounds, one block and one assist.  Chariton pulled down 41 rebounds and had more offensive boards than defensive boards.  They had 21 offensive rebounds and 20 defensive rebounds.  The Chargers committed 17 turnovers and 12 fouls with 17 assists, 12 steals and 2 blocks.  Sean Sullinger had five points, four rebounds and one steal.  Hunter Storm had four points, five rebounds and one assist.  Eduard Rodygin had two points, one rebound, two steals and two assists.  Paul Long had two points, one rebound and one assist.  Alec Reynolds had three rebounds and four assists.  Joey Krutsinger had four rebounds, two steals and one assist.

9th Boys Edge Rockets

The Chariton freshmen boys won a close game with Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, 41-36, at Eddyville on January 14th.  Adam Kaska had a stellar game finishing with a team-high 15 points along with three rebounds, three steals and one assist.  Brad Krutsinger had a double-double with 13 assists, 11 rebounds, eight points, three blocks and six steals.  Carter Riechmann had seven points, five rebounds and two steals.  Spencer Sherrick had five points, two rebounds, one assist and two blocks.  Ethan Curnutte had five points, one rebound and one steal.  Chase Altenhofen had one point and two rebounds.  Dillon Sanders had five rebounds, three steals and two blocks.  Cody Evans had one steal and one assist.

9th/10th Girls Fall to Eddyville

The Chariton ninth and 10th grade girls team lost a conference game to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont at Chariton January 14th.  Chariton trailed by just three, 17- 14, at halftime but the Rockets outscored them 23-10 in the second half.  Sarah Fuhs had six points, three rebounds, three steals and two blocks.  Emily Seuferer had six points and four rebounds.  Alexis Curran had five points, two rebounds and one steal.  Delaney Richards had three points, three rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block.  Maria Blong had two points and three steals.  Kelsey Carver had  two points and one block.  Carley Arnold had five rebounds and two blocks.  Nikki Vande Lune and Madison Showers each had two points.  Haley Reece had one assist.

7th Red Girls 10-0 Overall

The Chariton seventh grade girl's Red team finished conference play undefeated with a 10-0 record with a 44-29 win over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont at Blakesburg.  Ivy Swarthout had 29 points, one rebound, five steals and two assists.  The game started with both teams applying pressure.  Chariton fell behind 5-0 before they got over their jitters and got into the flow of the game.  Many fouls were being called and Chariton had to make adjustments.  Autumn Gwinn and Tressa Shore again gave the team some valuable minutes along with Ivy Swarthout, who was injured early in the last game at home against Eddyville and only played one quarter.  The Chariton girls played with effort to pull away in the second half.  Hannah Isley had eight points, two rebounds, eight steals and two assists.  Abbie Peterson had four points, three rebounds and five steals.  Luci Swarthout had two points, two rebounds and three steals.  Aubrie Richards had one point, five rebounds, one steal and three blocks.  Autumn Gwinn had one rebound.

7th White Team Suffers First loss

The seventh grade girls' White team suffered their first loss of the season with a 7-4 loss.  It was a shortened game as Eddyville had only six players available for the game.

Pierschbacher will Play for the Hawkeyes

Ross Pierschbacher, a native of Chariton, verbally committed to play football at the University of Iowa.  Pierschbacher, 6'5" 280 pound offensive tackle, is a junior at Cedar Falls High School and is a starter for the Cedar Falls Tigers.  He is the son of Brad Pierschbacher and the grandson of Hubert and Mary Lou Pierschbacher of Chariton.   Brad grew up in Chariton and is a 1983 graduate of Chariton High School.
Ross was born in Chariton in 1995 and he lived here for four years until 1999 when Brad agreed to take a teaching position in Cedar Falls.  Ross was born at the Lucas County Health Center and was delivered by Dr. Doug Hoch.
Ross has been a starter on the varsity team his freshman, sophomore and junior years.  The last two years the Tigers have reached the state semifinals of the Class 4A playoffs.  Ross was named to First Team All-District in 2011 and 2012.  The Des Moines Register and the Iowa Newspaper Association also named him to First Team All-State in 2011 and 2012 as well.  According to Ross' father, Brad, he is ranked as the number one recruit in the state of Iowa for all positions in the Class of 2014.  He's also considered to be one of the best offensive lineman prospects in the nation for the Class of 2014.
Powerhouses like Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Nebraska along with Boise State, Iowa and Iowa State have all tried to recruit Ross.  Ross has made visits to Notre Dame, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, Alabama, Wisconsin and Oklahoma twice for two games. 
Ross has always been a Hawkeye fan and this is what drew him to the University of Iowa.  He's really comfortable with the coaching staff at Iowa and being able to play for the state of Iowa with their fan base played in his decision.

Varsity Girls fall to Eddyville at Home

At the Charger Dome Monday night, the 14th of January, the Chariton Varsity girls basketball team played conference co-leader Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in a very tough game before losing.  The Lady Chargers destroyed Eddyville on the boards and attempted 60 shots, but they couldn't get enough shots to get the win.  Allyson Showers had a double-double with 11 points, a team-high 17 rebounds and five steals, Miranda Davis also had 11 points. 
The Lady Rockets were tied for first in the SCC coming in with Clarke.  They beat Clarke but lost to Centerville earlier this season to leave the teams deadlocked atop the standings.  Emily Grismore had five points.  Emma Fuhs had two points, seven rebounds and three blocks.  Alexis Curran, Leah Dow and Chelsea McGee each had two points.

Go Pink Night

Varsity Boys fall to Grinnell on Go Pink Night, January 12th,  69-43.  The boys didn't play quite as good in the second half as they did in the first.  After a great start and an outstanding first half effort, the Charger boys only trailed just 35-30.  With the loss Chariton moved to 9-3 overall.  T.J. Hockenson led Chariton in scoring with 11 points to go along with seven rebounds and one steal.  Daric Laing had eight points, two rebounds and two assists.  Bryce Cunningham had seven points, two rebounds, two steals and four assists.  Alex Wright had seven points, two rebounds, one steal and one assist.  Christian Bengtson had three points, one rebound, one steal and two assists.  Carl Williams had three points.  Willie Felderman had two points, one rebound, one steal and two assists.  Conner Altenhofen had two points.  Brett Braida had one assist.

Varsity girls lost to Grinnell on Go Pink Night 62-34.  Grinnell's Deja Jackson and too many turnovers was too much for the Chariton's girls.  Jackson scored 31 points and Chariton committed a season high 29 turnovers in the loss.  Miranda Davis led Chariton in scoring with 13 points and rebounding with six boards.  Allyson Showers had eight points, five rebounds and four steals.  With the loss, Chariton moved to 2-8 overall.  Emily Grismore had seven points, Chelsea McGee had two points, five rebounds and four blocks.  Emma Fuhs and Leah Dow each had two points.  Kylie Bengtson had two assists. The Chariton freshmen boys lost to Grinnell, 61-34, on Go Pink Night at Chariton January 12.  Brad Krutsinger led Chariton in scoring with 13 points to go along with seven rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block.  Spencer Sherrick had seven points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist.  Dillon Sanders had five points and five rebounds.  Chase Altenhofen had four points and five rebounds.  Ethan Curnutte had three points and one steal.  Grant Shriver had two points.  Adam Kaska had six rebounds, one steal and one assist.  Carter Riechmann had six rebounds and one steal.  Ethan Payton had two rebounds and Cody Evans and Sam Lerner each had one.  Max Covington also played.

Varsity Boys Beat Clarke 69-39

The Chariton varsity boys basketball team played very well and beat Clarke 69-39 in their game on January 11th at Clarke.  The Chargers led 40-16 at halftime and held Clarke to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters.  With the win Chariton moved to 4-2 in conference and 9-2 overall.  Daric Laing led Chariton in scoring with 14 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block.  Alex Wright went 3-6 from three-point range and finished with 11 points, three rebounds, one assist and one block.  T.J. The Chariton freshman boys' basketball team beat Clarke, 30-15, at Osceola on January 11th.  Chase Altenhofen led the Chargers in scoring with eight points to go along with a team-high 10 rebounds, one block, one steal and one assist.  Brad Krutsinger had six points, eight rebounds, five steals and two assists.  Spencer Sherrick had six points, six rebounds, three steals and one assist.  Adam Kaska had three points, one rebound, one steal and three assists.  Ethan Curnutte had three points and one steal.  Dillon Sanders had two points, five rebounds and one steal.  Cody Evans had two points.  Carter Reichmann and Grant Shriver each had one rebound in the game.

Lady Chargers Lost to Clarke

Davis scores 11, Fuhs has nine boards in varsity girls loss at Clarke, 57-25 on January 11th.  Turnovers did the girls in even though the game was tight early as Clarke led 6-5 after one period.  The Lady Indians picked it up offensively in the second and outscored Chariton 19-7 to take a 25-12 lead at halftime.  Clarke outscored the girls 12-9 in the third and 20-4 in the fourth to get the win.  Allyson Showers had seven points, eight rebounds and three blocks.  Emily Grismore had six points and Leah Dow had one.  Emma Fuhs had a team-high nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals.  Kylie Bengtson had three assists.

The Chariton ninth and tenth grade girl's basketball team won at Clarke, 30-17, January 11th.  Chariton held a 21-8 lead at halftime and held on for the win.  Maria Blong had six points, two rebounds and three steals.  Alexis Curran had six points, one rebound and three steals.  With the win, Chariton moved to 4-7 overall.  Sarah Fuhs had four points.  Carley Arnold had three points, five rebounds, two steals and three blocks.  Delaney Richards had three points, three rebounds and two steals. Emily Seuferer had two points, three rebounds and one block.  Kelsey Carver had two points, two rebounds and one steal.  Haley Reece had two points and two rebounds.  Madison Showers had two points.

CMS Eighth Grade Girls beat Clarke 18-15

The Chariton eighth grade girls' Red team played sharp in edging Clarke, 18-15 at Chariton, January 3rd.  Chariton led 8-5 at halftime and both teams scored 10 points in the second half.  Sophia DeMaria led Chariton in scoring with six points to go along with one rebound.  Carlie Schaeffer had four points, one rebound and four steals.  Mackenzie Curran had four points and two assists.  Kendall Hardie had two points, one rebound and one steal.  Abby Storm had one point and two rebounds.  Tiffany Dale had one point and one rebound.  Saydee Terrell had two rebounds, one steal and two blocks.  Riley Rector had two rebounds and one block.  Mackenzie Thomas-Clark had one rebound.

CMS Seventh Red and White Girls Beat Clarke 57-17

The seventh grade girls Red team played an outstanding game against Clarke at Chariton on January 3rd.  Ivy Swarthout led Chariton in scoring with 16 points to go along with one rebound, four steals and one assist.  Hannah Isley had 15 points, three rebounds, five steals, four assists and one block.  Chariton ended the first half with 32 points.  Aubrey Richards had 10 points, seven rebounds, two steals and four blocks.  Aubrey led the defense and played her best all-around game to date.  Ivy and Hannah had 50 percent shooting from the field.  Luci Swarthout had 12 points, three rebounds, four steals and two assists.  Abbie Peterson had four points, three rebounds and one block.  Tressa Shore had one rebound.  Taytum Bacus, Taheton Decker and Megan Schultz also played.

The White team had a much closer game but came through with a 10-8 final score.  The score was tied until midway into the fourth quarter when Trinity Kemper and Megan Schultz made baskets to give Chariton a lead down the stretch.  For the game, Chariton shot 5-21, 24 percent from the field.  Schultz had four points, one rebound and one block.  Taheton Decker had two points and two rebounds.  Ashley Pfrimmer and Kemper each had two points and one rebound.  Natalie Baird had three rebounds and three steals.  Jacklynn Johnson had one rebound and one steal.

The Chariton JV girls beat Albia in their season opener on January 10th, 42-24. Albia led at halftime, but Chariton outscored the Lady Dees, 28-7 in the second half, to win going away. Emily Seuferer had 10 points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block. Sarah Fuhs had 10 points, two rebounds and two steals. Kelsey Carver had six points, two steals and an assist. Maria Blong had five points, two rebounds and a steal. Carley Arnold had three points and three rebounds. Delaney Richards had two points, two rebounds and a block. Nikki Vande Lune had two points and one rebound. Laurin Zern had two points. Jessica Wiederholt had one point and two rebounds. Haley Reece had one point. 7th Red and White Girls' Teams Unbeaten with win at Albia

This rematch in Albia on January 10th brought another win to the Chariton seventh grade girls.  The Charger Red team coasted to a 44-12 win to remain unbeaten, led by Ivy Swarthout, to remain unbeaten.   She had a team-high 24 points, eight steals and one assist.  Luci Swarthout had 14 points, a team-high nine steals, one rebound and one assist.  Aubrie Richards had four points, five rebounds, one steal and four blocks.  Abbie Peterson had two points, eight rebounds, five steals and two assists.  Autumn Gwinn had two rebounds and five steals.  Tressa Shore had one rebound, two steals and one assist.  Taytum Bacus had one steal.

The White team also remain unbeaten with a 12-4 win over Albia.  Chariton had a balanced scoring attack as six different players scored.  Ashley Pfrimmer had two points, two rebounds and two steals.  Tressa Shore had two points and one steal.  Taheton Decker had two points and one steal.  Taytum Bacus had two points, three steals and an assist.  Trinity Kemper had two points and three steals.  Natalie Baird had two points, one rebound and four steals.  Danica Derringer led the team in rebounds with three and contributed three steals and one assist.  Jacklynn Johnson had three steals and Autumn Gwinn had one rebound.  Megan Schultz had one assist.

CMS 8th Girls' Basketball Teams Beat Albia

The Chariton Red and White eighth grade girls' basketball teams both picked up wins at Albia on January 10th.  The Red team led by seven at halftime and won by a 24-19 score.  The White team edged Albia, 12-10, to stay undefeated. 
In the Red game, Chariton had seven players get into the scoring column.  Sophia DeMaria led them in scoring with eight points along with five rebounds and one steal.  Kendall Hardie had five points, one rebound and two steals.  Carlie Schaeffer had four points, two rebounds and five steals.  Saydee Terrell had two points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Tiffany Dale and Mackenzie Thomas-Clark each had two points.  Riley Rector had one point and two rebounds.  Abby Storm had one rebound, two steals and two blocks.
In the White game, Allison Summerfield had four points, three rebounds and one steal.  Anna Hyenko had four points, two rebounds, four steals and two blocks.  Aimee Greiner and Mackenzie Thomas-Clark each had two points.  Althea Williams had three rebounds and Morgan Cochran had one steal.

Basketball at Wayne January 5th

January 5th the Varsity boys came together after a slow start and defeated Wayne, 65-49.  Alex Wright and T.J. Hockenson each had big offensive games for the Chargers, who moved to 8-2 overall with the win.  Laing went 5-9 from two-point range and 2-6 from beyond the arc and had a team-high 20 points along with two rebounds, four assists and two steals.  Wright went 5-7, 71 percent, from inside the arc and 2-4 from three-point range to finish with 18 points, a team-high seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.  Hockenson went 7-11, 64 percent from inside the arc to finish with 17 points, four rebounds and one assist.  Bryce Cunningham had six points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals.  Willie Felderman had two points, four rebounds, one assist and one block.  Carl Williams had two points and three rebounds.  Christian Bengtson had three rebounds and one steal.  Brett Braida had one rebound.

Chariton JV Boys Soar Over Wayne

The JV Charger boys fought hard and came away winners with a 51-39 win against Wayne at Corydon January 5th.
The JV Chargers led by 11 at halftime and outscored the Falcons, by one in the second half to win by double digits.
Brett Braida and Conner Altenhofen once again had big games for Chariton.  Braida had a team-high 19 points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist.  Altenhofen had a double-double with 18 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.  Sawyer Dow had six points, two rebounds and two assists.  Hunter Storm had five points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal  Ben Morrett had five points, one rebound two steals and three assists.  Joey Krutsinger had two points and seven rebounds.  Alec Reynolds had two points, two rebounds, one steal and two assists.  Sean Sullenger had two points, one rebound and one block.  Quinn Storm had two points and three rebounds.  Eduard Rodygin had three assists, one rebound and one steal.  Ben Sullenger had one rebound.  Paul Long had one assist

CHS 9th/10th Girls Beat Wayne

The Chariton 9th and 10th grade girls basketball team won at Wayne 36-31.  Wayne led 19-15 at halftime but Chariton outscored them 21-12 in the second half to get the win.  Alexis Curran had 12 points, two rebounds and four steals.  Emily Seuferer had four points, two rebounds and one assist.  Delaney Richards had two points, five rebounds and two steals.  Nikki Vande Lune had two points, five rebounds and one steal.  Sarah Fuhs had five points, three rebounds, a steal and an assist.  Kelsey Carver had four points, five rebounds, two steals and one block.  Carley Arnold had two points, six rebounds and two blocks.  Madison Showers had two rebounds.  Maria Blong had four points, three rebounds and three steals.  Haley Reece had one point, one rebound and one steal.  Meredith Davis had five rebounds and one steal.

Varsity, JV, 9th Boys Basketball Against Centerville

Varsity boys suffer second loss with home defeat against Centerville.

After falling behind early, the team suffered its second loss, 64-47 against Centerville at the Charger Dome January 4th. Poor shooting in the first half hindered the boys and they never recovered.  Alex Wright went 3-5 from the three point land and finished with a team high 15 points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist.  With the loss, Chariton is now 7-2 overall.  Daric Laing had nine points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal.  Bryce Cunningham had eight points, four rebounds, a team-high eight assists and one block.  Willie Felderman had six points, a team-high eight rebounds and two assists.  T.J. Hockenson had five points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Christian Bengtson had three points and three rebounds.  Conner Altenhofen had one point and one rebound.  Carl Williams had three rebounds and Brett Braida and Dmitry Reus each had one rebound. 

Braida and Altenhofen lift JV Boys to win over Centerville

Brett Braida with his team high 16 points and Conner Altenhofen with his 14 points, took the Charger JV boys to a 49-41 win over Centerviile at Chariton on January 4th.  Braida also had seven rebounds.  Altenhofen had a double-double and a team high 12 rebounds and two steals.  With the win Chariton moved to 3-3 overall at this date.  Chariton had trouble offensively early on and trailed 10-7 after one period.  By halftime the Chargers led 23-19.  Ben Morrett had seven points, three rebounds, two steals and four assists.  Quinn Storm had five points, five rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Eduard Rodygin had four points, one rebound, one steal and one assist.  Alec Reynolds had two points, three rebounds, one steal and two assists.  Hunter Storm had one point, three rebounds and two assists.  Joey Krutsinger had five rebounds.  Sean Sullenger had one rebound.

9th Boys Fall to Centerville

The Chariton freshmen boys' basketball team fell at home to Centerville, 48-27.  Aaron Cain led the Chargers in scoring with 11 points to go along with eight rebounds and two assists.  Chase Altenhofen had a double-double with 10 points, a team-high 11 rebounds, one block and one steal.
For the game, Chariton shot 11-33, 33 percent, from inside the arc and 1-16, six percent, from three-point range.  Chariton shot 2-10 from the line.  The Chargers pulled down 30 rebounds.  They committed 17 turnovers and eight fouls.  Chariton had four assists, four steals and one block.
Ethan Curnutte had four points, one rebound and one assist.  Dillon Sanders had two points and one rebound.  Spencer Sherrick had three rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Adam Kaska had two rebounds.  Carter Riechmann had four rebounds.  Grant Shriver had one rebound, one block and one steal.  Sam Lerner had one rebound.  Cody Evans also played.
