Chargers Beat Fairfield in Exciting, Rollicking Final Game
The Chariton Chargers closed out their football season with an exciting up and down, action-filled game against Fairfield on October 25th. On Senior Night, the Chargers beat the Trojans, 34-28, to end their season with a 4-5 record. The final record is the best record Chariton has had in football since 2007 when they also finished 4-5. Along with Senior Night, it was also Go Pink Night where everyone was dressed at least partly in pink for breast cancer awareness.
It was the last high school football game for 12 outstanding seniors, who all contributed this season. They were Christian Bengtson, Hunter Storm, Ben Morrett, Connor Grgurich, Alec Reynolds, Chasen Blue, Zach McElroy, Ben Kinonen, Stephen McCurdy, Pavel Garbozov, Timo Timofeyev and Tyler Nance. They will all be missed next season.
The Chargers started out well and led 21-0 in the second quarter and 28-7 just before halftime. They allowed a late score in the second quarter to make the score 28-14 at halftime. Chariton didn't play as well in the third quarter and Fairfield was able to get back in the game and tie it 28-28 with a score just into the first minute of the fourth quarter.
Chariton buckled down defensively in the final period however and got the winning score on a 31 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Christian Bengtson to tight end T.J. Hockenson to make it 34-28 with 6:08 left.
