8th Charger Boys Basketball team has four wins

A 54-16 win over Clarke November 17 started the season with a bang.  The Chargers dominated from the opening tip to the final buzzer.  Three Chargers scored in double figures and Daric Laing led the Chargers with 18 points.  Chase Altenhofen had two points. 

Against Centerville, the Chargers had another impressive win with a 47-18 score.  

Chariton 64, Albia 31 was the eighth grade boys win with their third straight blowout.  They improved their standing to 3-0 overall.  Chase Altenhofen had two points.  

The Chariton 8th grade boys again made it look easy with a 76-13 annihilation of Davis County at Chariton December 8th.  This brought the standings up to 4-0 overall.  This team is very talented and work well together on the court, at practice and are leaders in the classroom. 

College News

Jessica Hansen, daughter of Jay and Julie Hansen of Johnston, was named to the Dean's List at American Institute of Business this fall.  Jessica will be inducted into the International Honor Society PHI THETA KAPPA at a ceremony in January.  Jessica is the granddaughter of Joyce Allard and the late Calvin Allard of Russell.  Her grandparents, the late Jack and Bernice Hansen were also long time residents of Russell.

Varsity boys lose against Knoxville

The Chariton boys could not return from a slow start and lost 61-59 their home game against Knoxville.  The Chargers trailed by 11 after one period and seven at halftime and couldn't come back enough to get the win.  In this game, Cole Pierschbacher had six rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Alex Wright had one rebound and one steal.

7th A Charger Boys win opener against Clarke

The Chariton seventh grade A boy's basketball team won a close first game, 20-18, against Clarke at Chariton on November 17.  Levi Abbas had six points.  The Chariton B  team lost to Clarke, 8-2. 

In their second game the A team struggled against Centerville's defense in a 44-14 loss at Centerville December 1.  Levi Abbas had three points.  The B team lost to Centerville  18-9.

The Chariton A squad lost at Albia, 49-14, December 5.  Carver Dow had two points.  The B team lost a real barnburner, 20-16 in triple overtime.  Jared Wright had four points.

JV Charger Boys fall to Albia

The Chariton boys could not overcome the turnovers and defensive struggles when they lost 50-36 home loss to Albia on December 9.  The Chargers gave up 33 first half points and had 33 turnovers in the loss. 

Coach Jay Pierschbacher said, "We had too many turnovers tonight and our defense wasn't good.  We have to start making improvements in this area.  We really weren't focused on the defensive end.  I'm surprised by this because Albia has always been a thorn in our side.  We hope to get this corrected when we go to Albia.  We shot the ball well from the field.  Brett was the only player to hit a three and we struggled getting into the flow of the game."

Austin Peterson had six points and four rebounds.  Hunter Storm had four points, one rebound and one block.  Alec Reynold and two rebounds.  Conner Altenhofen had an assist.

9th Boys Beat Albia

The Chariton 9th grade boys beat Albia, 51-45 after jumping out to an early lead and held on to it.  They came out strong against Albia and led the whole time.  For the game, Chariton shot 17-40, 43 percent, from inside the arc and 3-5 from three-point range.  Sawyer Dow had 10 points, four rebounds, two steals and a block.   Cody Moore had a steal.

McCullough and Schreck Receive Awards

 Emily McCullough, Chariton and Chantelle Schreck, Russell, have received an Accounting Academic Achievement Award at AIB College of Business.  To be considered for the recognition, McCullough and Schreck were required to maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher in all their classes - not just accounting - over the course of the previous year.  Eligible students were reviewed by the accounting faculty. 

The students' accomplishments were celebrated at a reception attended by AIB faculty, staff and students.  Recent AIB graduate Bryant Blay spoke of his experiences working as an accountant and studying for the CPA exam.  Accounting Instructor Amanda Daugherty emphasized the importance of academic excellence in her address to the assembly.

McCullough named Presidential Scholar at AIB

Emily McCullough of Chariton has been honored as a Presidential Scholar at AIB College of Business for the 2011 Fall Term.
"Our Presidential Scholars are the best of the best," said AIB President Nancy Williams, "Students like Emily have the ambition, the will, and the talent to shine here and to be rising stars in the business world."
To be named a Presidential Scholar, McCullough had to attain a grade point average of 3.80 or higher for the term.  McCullough is earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting at AIB.

Schreck named Presidential Scholar at AIB

Chantelle Schreck of Russell has been honored as a Presidential Scholar at AIB College of Business for the 2011 Fall Term.  Schreck is earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting at AIB.

Indian Hills Community College

Indian Hills Community College has released the names of the students who were on the college's academic Honor Roll for the Fall term this year.  To be included on the Honor Roll, a student must be enrolled fulltime and have a grade-point average of 3.5 or highter for the term.  Kalina G. Litvin and Sarah N. Poush, of Russell were two of these students.

Varsity Chargers fall to Albia

The Chariton varsity boys lost a hard fought battle that ended in double overtime, 60-58, against Albia.  In the second half the score varied by only one point most of the time.  The students and spectators were on the edge of their seats most of the game, but the Chargers came up short in the end.  With the loss, Chariton moved to 1-1 in the conference.With the fans cheering well into the game and with the excitement of the game, no one wanted to leave.  The Chargers and Blue Demons fought valiantly on every possession.  The Blue Demons outscored the Chargers, 5-3 in the overtime period to come away with the win.

Cole Pierschbacher had four points, three rebounds, two blocks and a steal.  Alex Wright had two points, two rebounds and a steal.

Varsity Boys Win over Clarke

The boys came back after their loss to Oskaloosa with an impressive 63-50 win over Clarke in their conference opener at Chariton.  The Chargers had it all together and built a 14-point halftime lead.  They built the lead to over 20 points in the second half. 

The Chargers led 16-10 after one period.  They outscored the Indians 14-6 in the second to take a 30-16 lead at halftime.  Chariton kept up the tenacious defensive intensity in the third and built their lead to 48-24 heading into the fourth period.  The Indians made a nice comeback in the fourth quarter to cut into the Charger lead.

Brendan Laing had eight points, four rebounds, two steals and two assists.  Kellen Curnutte had six points, six rebounds and one steal.  Alex Wright had six points, four rebounds, three steals and one assist.  Tyler Folkerts had three points, a team-high eight rebounds and three steals.  Cole Pierschbacher had three points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist.  Austin Burlin had two points, three rebounds and one assist.  Cody Carroll had one point.  Mike Mosbach had two rebounds, one block and one steal.

With the win the Chargers moved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

Chargers Win Season Basketball Opener

Five Chargers Score Double Figures in the Game

A 76-53 win over I-35 at Truro gave the Chargers their season opener win.  In the first half five players had reached double figures in scoring.  The game was tight early on as Chariton led 12-9 after one period.   The Chargers outscored the Roadrunners, 23-11 in the second to build a 35-20 halftime lead.  I-35 didn't quit and cut the lead to nine in the third period.  Chariton led 53-41 after three periods and outscored I-35, 23-12 in the fourth to get the commanding win.

Cole Pierschbacher had three points, six rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Cody Carroll had two points and one rebound.  Alex Wright had two points, one steal and two assists.
