JV Chargers win two at I-35 Tournament

The Chariton JV boys basketball team picked up two wins in a tournament held at Interstate35 in Truro Saturday, January 29th.  The JV boys beat Interstate 35, 59-41, in the first game and they clobbered Van Meter, 65-29, in the second game.  In both games, Chariton had a lot of players in the scoring column.  In the I-35 game, Cole Pierschbacher had 12 points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists.  Austin Peterson had five points, one rebound and one steal.  Cameron Knust had four points, three assists, one rebound, one block and one steal.  Cody Carroll had two points, four rebounds and one steal.  In the Van Meter game, Cody Carroll had a team high 18 points, along with five rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Alex Wright had 12 points along with two rebounds and a steal.  Cameron Knust had 10 points, three rebounds and a steal.  Cole Pierschbacher had five points, five rebounds, a block, a steal and an assist.  Austin Peterson had two points, two rebounds and a steal.

Chargers 1st at JV Classic

The Chariton JV wrestlers had two champions and four runners-up at the Southern Iowa JV Classic at Fairfield this past Saturday.  The meet was the last of the season for the JV Chargers.  Stephen McCurdy went 2-1 and finished second.  Cole Graves finished fourth.  McCurdy pinned Ft. Madison's Gabe Pauley in 4:13.  He also pinned Burlington's Jacob Moret in 3:32.  Stephen lost to Albia's Nick Hollinrake, 5-2.

9th Girls beat Davis Co. 36-27

The Chariton freshmen girls beat Davis County, 35-27.  The girls raced out to a 19-6 lead at halftime and withstood a 21-point second half by the Mustangs to get the win.  Leah Dow had six points and one rebound.  Madison Briggs had one rebound.

Chariton Varsity Boys fell short at Davis County, 65-52

The Chariton varsity boys again battled hard but fell short at SCC leader Davis County, 65-52, at Bloomfield January 28.  Davis County has the biggest starting lineup in terms of size and strength in the SCC, and the Chargers weren't able to physically match the athleticism of the Mustangs.  Cody McCullough had a double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks.  Jed Marvin had seven points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals.  Ki Marvin had five points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal.  Cameron Knust had four points and one rebound.  Cole Pierschbacher had four rebounds and one steal.  Tyler Knust had one rebound and one assist.

JV Boys Pound Davis Co.

A strong all-around team effort lifted the Chariton JV boys to a 64-49 win over Davis County at Bloomfield January 28th.  Alex Wright had seven points, five rebounds, one steal and one assist.  Cody Carroll had six points, four rebounds and one assist. 

Presley Swan Scores 19 Points at Davis County


Another stellar shooting game by Presley Swan helped lift the Chariton varsity girls to a 55-40 win over Davis County in a conference game at Chariton on January 28th.  Swan had a team-high 19 points along with four steals.
"Presley's been shooting the ball really well and hit some big shots for us tonight," coach Lee Sandy said.

Varsity Wrestlers lose to Creston

The Chariton varsity wrestlers closed their dual season against an extremely tough Creston team at Creston on January 27th.  At 135 Stephen McCurdy was pinned by Grant Heckman in 55 seconds.

8th A Chargers beat Eddyville-Blakesburg

The Chariton eighth grade A boys basketball team ended their season on a high note with a 42-33 win over Eddyville-Blakesburg at Chariton on Jan. 27.  The win gave the eighth A Charger boys a 500 season with a final record of 5-5.  Sawyer Dow had six points, two rebounds, three assists and one steal.

Russell's 1958 Basketball Team

    In years past, Russell High School has known several fine basketball teams.  Only one, however, has advanced into the annual State Tournament.  The 1958 team pictured above entered the State Tournament with a 25-1 record.  They defeated Macksburg at Chariton in the first round of the state contest and next faced Roland, a perennial favorite in that decade, at the Veteran's Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines.  The Russell team was defeated by this tourney favorite and finished fourth place in the state after being defeated by Calumet in the consolation round.  Their team spirit and determination created some exciting contests that year and merited a big following by the community.  Nearly all of Russell turned out to back the team at the state contest games.

Strong Second Half lifts 9th/10th Girls over Eddyville 40-25

A strong second half was the difference in the Chariton freshmen and sophomore girls' win over Eddyville-Blakesburg game at Chariton on January 25th.  Leah Dow had two points and one steal.  Madison Briggs had one rebound and one assist.

College News

Des Moines Area Community College President Rob Denson recently released the names of students eligible for the Fall Semester President's List.  To be eligible, a student must have earned a 4.0 grade point average.  Ashley Schreck, Liberal Arts, from Russell was recognized.

Varsity Girls Fall to Lady Rockets in OT

For the third time this season, the Chariton varsity girls suffered a heartbreaking loss at home in overtime to a conference opponent.  The third time happened against Eddyville-Blakesburg this past Tuesday night when they lost 53-52 in overtime at the Charger Dome.  Point guard Presley Swan hit a three point shot with under 10 seconds left to tie the game at 44 apiece and sent it into overtime.  However the Lady Rockets outscored Chariton 9-8 in the extra period to get the win.

Chariton JV Boys Beat Carlisle for Ninth Win of Season

Despite not giving their best effort, the Chariton JV boys beat Carlisle, at Carlisle January 24th.  Four Chargers scored in double figures including Cameron Knust, who led the team with 13 points along with five rebounds, two assists and two steals.  The win moved Chariton to 9-3 overall.  Alex Wright had 11 points, five rebounds and one assist.  Cody Carroll had five points, one rebound and one steal.

8th Chargers experience loss to Davis Co.

Bad shooting and too many turnovers were too much to overcome for the Chariton eighth grade A boys in a 38-27 loss to Davis County at Bloomfield January 24th.  Sawyer Dow had three points, three rebounds and two steals.

Four JV Wrestlers Finish First at Perry

The Chariton JV wrestlers crowned four champions at the Perry JV Wrestling Tournament January 22.  Stephen McCurdy went 3-0 with three pins and finished first.  McCurdy wrestled teammate Cole Graves and pinned him in 1:03.  He also pinned Wyatt Krause of Boone in 1:13.  McCurdy pinned Scott Filman of West Central Valley in 1:52.

9th Charger Boys lose to Albia

A bad fourth quarter defensively doomed the Chariton freshman boys basketball team in a 46-34 loss to Albia at Chariton on January 21st.  Alec Reynolds had four points, six rebounds, two blocks and one steal.

Varsity Boys fall to Albia, 51-49

Varsity boys fall in two-point thriller to Albia, 51-49.  In what was a thrilling high school basketball game with down to the wire action, the Chariton varsity boys fell just short against SCC rival Albia.  The Chargers fell despite an outstanding game by Cody McCullough, who shot 8-10 from the field and had 19 points, three rebounds and two assists.  Ki Marvin nailed a three-pointer with just under a minute left to cut Albia's lead to one, 48-47.  Ki had five points, one rebound, one steal and one assist.  Jed Marvin had two points, three rebounds and one steal.  Cameron Knust had one steal.

Lady Chargers lose at Home in OT to Albia 53-47

The Chariton varsity girls played another highly contested thriller at home against a conference opponent, Albia, on Friday night January 21st.  The game ended in overtime with a disappointing defeat, 53-47.  Presley Swan had a great game, she nailed three three-pointers in the second quarter and ended up with 15 points and one block.

The Chariton JV girls lost a close game, 28-26, to Albia at the Charger Dome on January 21.  Leah Dow had four points, one rebound and two steals.

JV Charger Boys beat Albia for Eighth Win

Another outstanding team effort from start to finish lifted the Chariton JV boys to a 62-46 win over Albia at Chariton on January 21st.  Cameron Knust had a great game with 13 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists.  Alex Wright had 12 points, five rebounds, one steal and one assist.  Cody Carroll went 5-6 from the field and finished with 10 points, four rebounds and one steal.

Varsity Chargers fall to Clarke Indians

Despite another fast start and a sizzling shooting game by Jed Marvin, the Chariton varsity boys were unable to hold on and fell at Clarke, 52-49, Friday, January 14.  Marvin sizzled the nets going 5-10 from trifecta land and finishing with a career-high 23 points along with three rebounds, two steals and three assists.  Cody McCullough had eight points, a team-high 11 rebounds, two steals and three assists.  Ki Marvin had one rebound and one assist.  Cameron Knust had one block and one assist.  Cole Pierschbacher had one rebound.  Marvin shot very well from the outside against Clarke's zone in helping them build the early lead.

College News

President's list:  Southwestern Community College has announced that Alex Bear, Russell, Freshman, Collision Repair Tech II, has earned selection to the President's list for the fall semester of 2010.  A student must earn a grade point average of 3.50 or higher for 12 or more hours of college work for the semester based on 4.0 grade average.

8th Chargers beat Centerville Reds 33-24

Huge offensive games lifted the Chariton eighth grade A boys to a 33-24 win over the Centerville team at Chariton on January 20th.  Both teams played a slower, more deliberate offensive game, but Chariton caused 16 turnovers while committing just nine.  The team shot very well from the field.  For the game, Chariton shot 15-31, 48 percent, from the field and 3-7, 43 percent, from the line.  Sawyer Dow had six points, one rebound, one steal and one assist.

Three Chariton JV wrestlers recorded pins against Fairfield.  Wrestling at 125, Stephen McCurdy pinned Matt Kaufman in 1:34.  He also lost by a 9-2 decision to Coronado.

Varsity Grapplers lose to Norwalk at Road Dual

On January 18, the Chariton varsity wrestlers split a couple of duals at Des Moines East and lost to Norwalk, 42-28.  At 135, Stephen McCurdy was pinned by Tyler Stanley in 1:32.

Ki Marvin has Career high 16 points in loss to Grinnell

The Chariton varsity boys fell to a fast, athletic Grinnell team, 61-52, in a non-conference game at Chariton on January 15.  Ki Marvin went 2-2 from the field and 4-5 from three-point range and tied for the team lead in scoring with a career-high 16 points to go along with one rebound and two assists.  Cody McCullough went 5-10 from inside the arc and 2-3 from three-point range to finish with 16 points along with two rebounds and one steal.  Jed Marvin also hit double figures with 10 points, one rebound and two assists.  Cole Pierschbacher had two rebounds.  Tyler Knust had one rebound.

The Chariton JV boys broke open a close game with a strong third quarter to beat Grinnell, 42-32, at Chariton on Saturday night, January 15th.  Cody Carroll had six points, a team-high nine rebounds, three steals and one assist.  Alex Wright had six points and three rebounds.  Cameron Knust had two points, two rebounds and one assist.

Turnovers hurt 8th Charger Boys at Albia

Too many turnovers and too few shots was the story for the Chariton eighth grade boys in their 41-21 loss to Albia at Chariton Jan. 13th.  Sawyer Dow had two points, two rebounds, one steal and one assist.  The Charger B team also lost to Albia 23-12.

8th Girls Fall To Albia 22-14

Despite a strong defensive effort, the Chariton eighth grade girls lost to Albia at Albia on Jan. 13.  Head coach J.J. Stout said he was pleased with the performance Jayme Pierschbacher gave during the game.  Jayme had two rebounds.

JV Wrestlers have one Champ at Centerville

The Chariton JV wrestling team had one champion and four runners-up at the Centerville JV Tournament on January 14th.  Stephen McCurdy won 2-1 and finished second.  He lost to Logan Huffman of Ft. Madison, 5-2.  He pinned Ft. Madison's Chase Beach in 2:59 and he pinned Ottumwa's Tyler Heiss in 17 seconds.

The Chariton JV boys defeated Clarke, 51-18 at Osceola on January 14th.  The JV Chargers stormed to a large lead at halftime and shot 60 percent from the field in the win.  This win moved the Chargers to 6-3 overall.  Alex Wright went 2-4 from three-point range and had eight points, one rebound and one assist.  Cody Carroll had six points, four rebounds, one block, one steal and one assist.  Cameron Knust had six points, two rebounds, three steals and four assists.  Austin Peterson had two rebounds.

Rachel Erin Dachenbach of Russell

Rachel was named to the President's List for outstanding academic achievement at Grand View University for earning a grade point average of 4.0 while carrying at least 12 hours of classes for the 2010 fall semester.

7th Girls BB teams fall to Eddyville



Cold shooting and turnovers were too much to overcome for the Chariton seventh grade girls Red team in a 17-8 home loss to Eddyville-Blakesburg.  Alexis Curran led the Red girls in scoring with six points along with six rebounds and six steals.  The White team lost 15-14, in a game that was close throughout.

CHS 9th/10th, JV girls fall to Eddyville

The Chariton freshman and sophomore girls team lost a tight game to Eddyville-Blakesburg, 35-33 at Eddyville on Jan. 4th.  Leah Dow had one point, two rebounds and a steal.   The freshmen, JV and varsity girls each host Clarke Friday, the 7th.

Good rebounding in the second half was key in the Chariton JV boys' 35-28 win at Eddyville-Blakesburg on Jan. 4.  Cody Carroll had eight points, five rebounds and one assist.  Cameron Knust had eight points, four rebounds, five steals, three assists and one block.  Alex Wright had six points, one rebound and one steal.

Furious Rally Lifts 9th Boys over E-B

A furious rally in the last three minutes helped the Chariton freshmen boys turn what looked like a loss into a 31-29 victory at Eddyville-Blakesburg on Jan. 4th.  With three minutes left the Chargers were down 29-17 but behind a stifling man to man full court pressure defense they scored 14 unanswered points to get the win.  With the win the freshmen Chargers moved to 5-3 overall.  Coach Jay Pierschbacher was pleased with the final three minutes and the results.  Alec Reynolds had two points, two rebounds, one block and one steal.

Inconsistency and poor play in the second half were the story in the Chariton varsity boys' 77-47 home loss to Centerville.   Centerville was really focused on shutting Cody McCullough down.  Jed Marvin had seven points, one rebound one steal and four assists.  Cameron Knust had seven points and one assist.  McCullough had five points, four rebounds, three steals and one assist.  Ki Marvin had four points, two rebounds and one assist.  Tyler Knust had three points.  Cody Carroll had one point and one rebound.  Cole Pierschbacher had one rebound and one assist.

9th Boys Fall to Centerville

Despite a valiant effort, giving up too many offensive rebounds, turnovers and poor shooting doomed the Chariton freshmen boys in a 38-28 loss to Centerville at Chariton on Jan. 4th.  Chariton had 29 rebounds, including 12 offensive boards.  They had seven steals, five assists and three blocks and committed 10 fouls.  Alec Reynolds had four points, one rebound and two steals.

Varsity Grapplers compete at Davis County meet

Varsity wrestling team won one dual and lost two at a meet at Davis county on January 13th.  At 135, Stephen McCurdy won by forfeit to give Chariton a 30-6 lead.  McCurdy lost to Darin Martin by a 9-4 decision.  Later Stephen was pinned by Chase Houston in 2:20.

JV Chargers win titles at D.M. North

The Chariton JV wrestlers crowned three champions at the Des Moines North JV Tournament on Jan. 8th.  Tylar Goddard and Brach Amos each went 2-1 to finish second.  Stephen McCurdy went 1-2 to finish third.  McCurdy pinned Conner Wutcher of Waukee in 1:20.  he lost to Logan Crawford of Van Meter, 10-8.

The Chariton JV girls fell to Pella Christian, 47-27 on January 8th.  Leah Dow had three steals.

8th Chargers win over Clarke 43-15

Relentless pressure defense in the second and third quarters lifted the 8th grade boys to a43-15 win over Clarke at Osceola on Jan. 6th.  With the win Chariton improved to 3-3 on the season.  Sawyer Dow had eight points, two rebounds, three steals and one assist.

Emily McCullough Named Presidential Scholar  -  Emily of Chariton has been honored as a Presidential Scholar at AIB College of Business for the 2010 Fall Term.  To be named a Presidential scholar, a student must have a grade point average of 3.80 or higher for 12 or more consecutive credit hours.
