Lady Chargers Win Two Matches at Clarke

The Lady Charger volleyball team competed at the Clarke Tournament this past weekend.  Chariton made a strong showing winning two of three matches in pool play and being competitive in their tourney play match.
In their first match, Chariton beat Martensdale St. Mary's, 21-13 and 21-19.  In their second match, Chariton lost 2-1 to Bedford.  The Lady Chargers won the first game, 21-13.  They lost a close second game, 21-16 and the deciding game, 15-8.
In their third match, Chariton beat Des Moines Lincoln, 2-1.  After losing a close first game, 23-21, Chariton won the second game, 22-20, and the deciding game, 15-12.  In tourney play, Chariton lost to Lamoni, 2-1.  Chariton won the first game, 25-23, They lost the second game, 25-20 and the deciding game 15-10.
"I was pleased with how we played this weekend.  It was hot and the girls responded well.  We are getting better in all categories." Chariton Head Coach Jana Cain said.
In serving, Chariton went 159-182 with 23 aces for the tournament.  Emily Grismore went 38-43 with eight aces.  Emma Fuhs went  40-44 with nine aces.  Taylor Tuley went 29-34 with two aces.  Alexis Curran went 17-23 with three aces.  Allyson Showers went 18-20 with one ace.  Kourtney Nichols went 16-19.
In team hitting, Chariton went 211-251 with 77 kills, Fuhs went 66-82 with 23 kills.  Emily Seuferer went 48-52 with 17 kills.  Showers went 31-36 with 12 kills.  Tuley went 37-45 with 13 kills.  Micaela Folkerts went 19-19 with five kills.  Cassie Carpenter went 6-9 with two kills.
In setting, Chariton had 63 assists as a team.  Grismore led the team with 37 assists.  Nichols had 22 assists.  Chariton had 118 digs as a team.  Showers had 23 and Fuhs had 21.  Curran had 16 and Nicholsl had 15.  Tuley had 10 digs.
In blocking, Fuhs had five block assists and three blocks solo.  Showers had three block assists and two blocks solo.  Seuferer had three block assists and two blocks solo.  Folkerts had four block assists and one block solo.  Tuley had one block assist and one block solo.  Carpenter had one block solo.

Lady Chargers Varsity and JV Girls both Move To 3-0 with Victories at Pleasantville

Lady Chargers Move To 3-0 with Victory at Pleasantville

The Chariton varsity girls moved to 3-0 with an exciting, 3-1 win over Pleasantville on the road August 29th.  
The match went back and forth as Chariton won the first game, 25-21.  The Trojans came back to win game two, 25-23, to even the match at one apiece.  The Lady Chargers came back to win game three convincingly, 25-13 to take a 2-1 lead.  The fourth game was a tightly contested thriller that Chariton pulled out, 29-27 to win the match.
In serving, Chariton went 80-94 with nine aces.  Kourtney Nichols went 16-17 with one ace.  Taylor Tuley went 14-15 with four aces.  Emily Grismore went 13-16 with one ace.  Emma Fuhs went 12-15 with one ace.  Alexis Curran went 12-16 with two aces.  Allyson Showers went 13-15.
In hitting, Chariton went 94-114 with 50 kills.  Fuhs went 32-29 with 14 kills.  Emily Seuferer went 20-24 with 10 kills.  Tuley went 17-19 with nine kills.  Showers went 15-15 with nine kills.  Cassie Carpenter went 4-8.
In setting, Chariton had 45 assists.  Grismore led the team with 25 and Nichols had 19.  Curran had one assist.  Chariton also had 45 digs as a team.  Curran and Nichols led the team with 13 apiece.  Showers and Tuley each had nine.
In blocking, Tuley had two block assists.  Fuhs had one block solo and two block assists.  Seuferer had one block solo.

JV Girls Volleyball Team Beats Pleasantville

The Chariton JV girls moved to 3-0 with a 3-0 win at Pleasantville on August 29th.  The scores of the match were 25-17, 25-13 and 25-17.  In serving, Chariton went 55-71 with 25 aces.  Meredith Davis went 12-13 with five aces.  Micaela Folkerts went 10-13 with four aces.  Kendall Hardie went 9-11 with six aces and Lindsay Black went 9-11 with four aces.  Carley Arnold went 5-8 with three aces and Mackenzie Welch went 5-8 with two aces.  Sarah Fuhs went 5-7 with one ace.
In attacks, Chariton went 28-35 with 13 kills.  Folkerts went 11-12 with seven kills.
Davis went 5-6 with two kills and Hardie went 4-4 with three kills.  Fuhs went 4-9 with one kill.  Black and Heffron each went 1-1.
Hardie led the team in assists with six.  Davis had five.  Arnold had one dig.

The Chariton Varsity Volleyball team began their season with two wins at a triangular at Chariton on August 27.  The Lady Chargers beat  Wayne, 25-22 and 25-21, and they beat Central Decatur, 25-21 and 25-5.
In the match against Wayne, Chariton went 38-45 serving with six aces.  Allyson Showers went 11-11 with one ace.  Emily Grismore went 8-9.  Taylor Tuley went 4-5 with one ace and Emma Fuhs went 4-6 with one ace.   Kourtney Nichols went 2-4 with one ace.  Brittany White went 1-1.
In hitting Chariton went 35-40 with 17 kills.  Emily Seuferer went 14-15 with seven kills.  Tuley went 11-12 with four kills.  Fuhs went 4-6 with four kills.  Cassie Carpenter went 3-3 with one kill.  Showers went 2-3 with one kill.
In setting Nichols led the team in assists with 10.  Grismore had five, Chariton had nine digs as a team.  Grismore, Nichols and Fuhs led the team with two apiece.  Showers Carpenter and Curran each had one.
In blocking, Fuhs had two block assists.  Tuley, Showers and Seuferer each had one block assist.

In the second match against Central Decatur, Chariton went 45-49 serving with nine aces.  Curran went 9-9 with three aces and Showers went 10-11 with three aces.  Grismore went 9-10 with three aces.  Nichols went 8-9.  Fuhs went 5-5 and Tuley went 4-5.
In hitting, Chariton went 26-32 with 13 kills.  Fuhs went 8-8 with two kills.  Seuferer went 5-6 with five kills and Showers went 6-2 with three kills.  Grismore went 4-4 with two kills.  Carpenter went 2-3 with one kill.
In setting, Grismore led the team in assists with six.  Nichols had five and Tuley had one.
Chariton had 13 digs as a team.  Curran led the team with four.  Grismore had three and Nichols, Showers and Tuley had two apiece.
In blocking, Showers had two blocks solo and one block assists.  Tuley had two blocks solo.  Fuhs had one block solo and two block assists.  Carpenter had two block assists.  Seuferer had one block solo and one block assist.

9th Girls Volleyball Beat Central Decatur
The Chariton freshman volleyball team started the season with a 2-1 win over Central Decatur JV at Chariton on August 27.  Chariton lost the first game, 13-21 and bounced back to win the final two games, 21-8 and 15-11.
Ashley Storm and Kenzie Curran each led the team in serving.  Storm went 9-11 and Curran went 6-9.
"Even though we started off slow and not getting our serves over the net, the girls came back and finished strong.  They never gave up and really came together as a team."  Chariton Head Coach Shannon Page said.

Five Lady Charger softball players were named to the All-South Central Conference softball team released recently.  Chariton had one All-SCC First Team selection in senior first baseman, Kylie Bengtson.  Chariton also had three All-SCC Second Team selections including junior catcher, Emma Fuhs, junior outfielder, Kourtney Nichols and sophomore pitcher, Ellie Bengtson.  Chariton had one player named to All-SCC Honorable Mention in senior shortstop Miranda Davis.

Baughman and Peterson named to 2013 All-State Super Team in Baseball

Jordan Baughman and Austin Peterson were recently named to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association's (IHSBCA) 2013 All State "Super Team".
The Super Team is made up of the top 16 players in the state in all four classes combined.  Peterson was selected to the team as an outfielder, while Baughman was selected as the team's shortstop.  Chariton was the only school in the state that had multiple players named to the Super Team.
In addition, Chariton catcher, Alex Wright, was a second team all state selection on the IHSBCA's class 3A team.

Jake Schroeder named Coach of the Year

Peterson, Palmer named First Teal All-State, Baughman, Wright named to second team.

After an outstanding season that included 35 wins and a state tournament appearance, the Chariton baseball team is now reaping the postseason accolades.
The Iowa Sports Spotlight has named Chariton Head Coach Jake Schroeder as the 3A Coach of the Year.  The Iowa Sports Spotlight also named four Charger players to All-State.  
Outfielder Austin Peterson and pitcher Charlie Palmer were named to the 3A All-State First Team.
Infielder Jordan Baughman and catcher Alex Wright were named to the 3A All-State Second Team.

Peterson, Baughman, Braida named to INA's All-State Team

Chariton's baseball team received more All-State recognition as three players were named to the Iowa Newspaper Association's All-State Team.  Outfielder Austin Peterson and infielder Jordan Baughman were each named to the INA's All-State First Team in Class 3A.  Infielder Brett Braida was named to the INA's Class 3A Third Team.

Hall, Wright, Peterson named to Academic All-State

The Iowa Baseball Coaches association recently recognized three Chariton baseball players for academic excellence.  Outfielder Token Hall and catcher Alex Wright were both named First Team Academic All-State and outfielder Austin Peterson was named to the Academic All-State second team.
Peterson and infielder Jordan Baughman were also selected to play in the Senior All-Star Series this week in Des Moines.  They will be playing from Thursday through Sunday, with Friday's games being played at Principal Park in Des Moines and the rest of the games being played at Valley High School in West Des Moines..

Grand Champion Breeding Heifer

Pictured is Mikenzy Beaty with her overall Grand Champion Breeding Heifer during the Breeding Beef Show at the Lucas County 4-H Fair the end of August.  Beaty nearly won both the Breeding Beef and Market Beef Shows as her market steer was named Reserve Grand Champion Overall Market Beef during the Market Beef show (Bill Howes photos).
